I’m honestly not 100% sure. Doesn’t sound like a good idea in my opinion! If your transmission is out of the car it should be a lot easier you could bolt it down to a workbench
was there a shim or anything when you disassembled it? mine doesnt turn by hand at all once i get it torqued to spec and i know its suppose to be turnable when in neutral
I had the exact same issue. Your seal is after market, I had tried 3 different aftermarket seals to try and save money I ended up buying it from bmw and it worked perfectly afterwards. Get a seal from the dealership

the drive shaft flange, that is.
