FINALLY! Someone explains the mysterious canyon between the blades! I have been trying to figure out why all of my curved shears have visibility between the blades.. now I know that the work is in the thumb 👍 Thank you!
Thank you so much! You have a fantastic ability to explain things clearly. I've been grooming my Shih Tzu for five years now and all this time I've been holding my scissors wrong and of course getting a less than satisfactory result. Annie's getting a bath as soon as I turn this off! I can hardly wait to practice. My only disappointment is that I see you provided this video three years ago. Think how fabulous a haircut Annie would be getting today if I'd seen it then! I'm going to subscribe. Undoubtedly there are lots more tips that will improve my skills.
Thank you so much! This helped me a lot ! I was having hand issues lately and i know it’s because I’ve been holding my shears wrong. As soon as I switch things from your video.. whole new world.. now I feel like I have to re learn how to groom
Well you were certainly helpful to me,as I am new to grooming my standard myself. I had one before that died of bloat and was only 4 years old. The best dog I ever had for sure. The dog actually understood me and was able to make me laugh when I wasn’t in the mood. So my new puppy is going to be groomed by me, instead of every six weeks of taking him to a groomer and groomers are so busy that if something comes up and I can’t make my appointment, I’ve been told they don’t have another opening for two or three weeks from now. I’ve actually found other groomers because I always took him in completely cleaned up and brushed so they wouldn’t have to brush him hard and fast. I took good care of him because he was really my best friend. I also tipped very well. But it didn’t mean anything. So I’m learning all I can and bought everything from table to clipper oil. My five piece scissor set will be here today or tomorrow. I feel like those little pieces of crap scissors that come with the clippers are not what it will be like compared to the nice curved 8” precision set I’ve been missing out on. Thank you for sharing your expertise and knowledge with me. I’m going to practice what you taught me. ✌️👍🇺🇸
Hi I was wondering if you can recommend a set from Amazon ?? I am not new to grooming but I am not yet a pro especially with scissor cutting, so I would love your opinion on what starting set I can buy that is not too too expensive. Thank you so much for sharing this video. It’s really helped a lot.
Hii, this video is already a life saver no doubts in that, but can you make a video explaining the pressure points on scissors? My thumb slips all the way through and i get confuse where to put pressure on the rings and the shank. Just got a technical mind, and love your hands ❤️
Smart girl if I have a poodle and I want one scissors to groom her with. What type do you recommend and what brand? She is a very tough forest dog and I want to mock her with funny haircuts And eventually refined a very practical style
I didn't know how to hold the curved shears lmao. this definitely helped my thumb placement and how to keep it in. I'm left handed but I've been trying to learn with my right hand since I usually do everything other than writing with my right, so my brain doesn't comprehend the differences unless I'm sat down and shown while still trying with my own. so basically my inserts that were color coded have to be changed on my curved. 😂😂😭. thank you!!
You shouldn't have to put side pressure with your thumb to get your shears to cut, that's what the adjuster is for. If you put side pressure with your thumb while using thinners, chunkers or blenders you'll jam them up and bend or break the teeth.. FYI -- The "balance" you refer to is the proper adjustment of the adjuster at the pivot.
What scissors do you recommend ? I am not a groomer but I have been grooming my dog and each time I am getting better and better . It’s hard to find a groomer that “only uses scissors technique on my Coton de Tulear”. Thank you so much for this advice, it is so helpful .
What size would the shears be for a 30/70? I'm looking at either 7" or 8" sets online, I'm just starting to purchase things to groom my own dog for practice first! Also can you recommend a cheaper brand for those of us just starting out?
Thank you so much for this!! I can't open my shears very much just using my thumb, I have a lot of physical limitations. Any tips for that, or is it okay to occasionally move the index finger?
Those shears are not set up properly. You need inserts that are small enough so there is no play at all in any finger hole. Why? Because it causes the shear to move as you scissor. With the thumb being sloppy like that you loose control. Your thumb controls the shear. Great presentation but the shears need set up properly.
Thanks for the input! I much prefer these inserts and believe that comes to personal preference. I'm sure for some one who struggles to scissor correctly tighter inserts would be beneficial!
Beginning my self taught journey and very much appreciate experienced groomers like you being willing to share your knowledge. Thanks.
This was really helpful as a LOT of groomers these days are self taught and haven't been told ever how to properly hold scissors.
thanks for watching!

a 30/70 shear can come in a variety of sizes, it is just the ratio of handle to blade! most starter shears are 8 inch
Thank you for your tips! :)
Any time!
Gracias ❤
🌹Thank You🌹
