    Thank you for this lesson! I have a few questions: when someone tells me about his past experience, can I say for example "If I were you, I would've felt the same"? In other words, can I mix the 2nd and 3rd conditionals? Or, should I say " If I had been you, I would've felt the same"? Which one sounds better? Thanking you in advance!

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "If I were you" is better because that's not specific to the past. Yes, you can mix the conditionals that way :)

    • @didimatueno8772
      @didimatueno8772 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I were you I would have felt the same (this mix means that the situation won't never happen because of the condition which is true or you won't never become "this person" ) so you can not mix both in this case
      So you can not mix the condt with this sentence

    • @shinytan
      @shinytan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      'If I were you', which you never would've been it's unreal to begin with.. That's why you can used mixed condition.. which is

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      _Lying down_ is normally the correct form, ex: "I don't like lying down on the floor." We use _laying down_ when we're talking about putting something down carefully, ex: "He took his time laying the plates down on the table."

    You didn't use BEEN in any of the sentence but many people does ... So what is correct. Can we use been also in conditional sentences
    If yes kindly explain with example

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      'Been' is the past participle of 'be' so it's like any other verb. Ex:
      1. "If you had worked hard, you would have gotten promoted."
      2. "If you had worked hard, you would have been promoted."
      Both sentences mean the same thing.

    Thanks teacher for the class! I have a question, why do you say that this line "If Arjun were a smart investor ....." is present ? and that " If I didn't have so much homework....." is present too? Aren't they past tense ideas ? Thanks for your answer!

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Olivia, you are correct: they use the past tense. But in conditionals, when we use the past tense, it simply means that it is an imaginary situation. That is, the situation is the OPPOSITE of reality. So when I say "If I didn't have so much homework..." - it means "I have a lot of homework". When I say "If Arjung were a smart investor...", immediately you know that it is the opposite of reality. So what is the reality? The reality is Arjun is NOT smart. So let me ask you a question:
      If I say "If my grandfather were still alive, he would be proud of me" - what do you understand by this sentence?

    Great lesson
    Help me with this-
    If someone had done something already then can we say that-if i were you,i wouldn't have done that(bcz he has already done that work)
    2,)if u were a graduate,i would give you a better package(is this sentence correct-tell me its meaning)
    3,) just help me with would have and would have been .i often get confused between the two.give me example
    Hoping for a quick reply ☺

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Henry, (1) & (2) are both correct. (2) means "You are not a graduate so I'm not giving you this regular package (not the better package)."
      'Would have been' is the same as 'would have' + any other verb. It just uses 'be' as the verb. Ex:
      1. If he had worked harder, he would have gotten a promotion.
      2. If he had worked harder, he would have gotten promoted.
      3. If he had worked harder, he would have been promoted.
      All of these mean the same thing.

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's in the passive voice, Henry. You can mention 'by the boss' or 'by the management' or something like that if you want. Ex:
      1. If he had worked harder, he would have been promoted by the management. (passive)
      2. If he had worked harder, the management would have promoted him. (active)
      Both mean the same thing.

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Pallavi, I think that any specific books that claim to make you more articulate will be less helpful. My English was not always as good as it is now. The way that I was able to build my vocabulary and also become more precise in my speaking and writing was to read for at least 3 hours a day. I still do this and I recommend developing this habit. This should be on top of any reading that you do as part of your studies. If three hours is too much, I suggest reading for at least two hours on topics not connected to your main subject. Have a look at this lesson:
      *1 Simple Method to Build a Powerful Vocabulary:* th-cam.com/video/cJkNIU_dVaA/w-d-xo.html :)

    I'm facing a problem regarding making a conditional sentence.
    I'm an employee and have money nowadays. But when I was student, at that we had no money and consequently I didn't get to get higher study. (if I had money at time I would be doctor now. If I had money at that time, I would have been a doctor). Is these both conditional sentences correct? Please help me regarding it

    By any chance, if we use "I wasn't" in the 2nd condition instead of the special grammar rule "I weren't", will it be wrong?
