One of the best outtakes. He could have gone even further with the "Joe met Everett McGill at a restaurant, but when it came time to cast the role couldn't remember his first name saying 'get me that McGill guy.' So here I am, Bruce McGill."
Even funnier is that the actor of General Hague played more or less the same role over in DS9, except there his rank was Admiral, rather than General and he was in the wrong with his secret back-room deals to bring down the government for what he considered to be the greater good.
That ISN scene is subtly incredible. Firstly, the news anchor involved has been on screen in various moments since the first season, so she has that recognition that helps make her feel a bit more significant. Then you get the little bits of set up in the dialogue "ISN is our lifeline to what is happening back home" and "They are having to walk a fine line...". Then the actress's reaction to when the producer comes in and starts to give out the news they can't broadcast, between trying to keep her calm on screen, the quiet yet anguished request for him to stop, steeling herself for speaking in her turn until the studio comes under attack. For a scene essentially involving someone who is only slightly above an extra, it has so much power in what is happening to them, and because you know the wider significance of it. I would say that it's an example of something that B5 got right, that many other genre shows have often neglected - yes, there is a power in spectacle, but you can also do a lot in quiet, like offering a drink, like standing in a lift with a cut on the hand, like the panic of an ordinary person caught up in events that have dire consequences for everyone
Well, the very premise of military storming the news broadcast company while they are broadcasting actually happened in reality. For example in Moscow during the October coup of 1993. Here's actual record of TV broadcast - the football match is interrupted by a reporter who just stated that studio is being stormed by armed militants and then it goes blank: th-cam.com/video/4oqVOHFLnhY/w-d-xo.html
There's also that moment when the debris is falling down on the table right in front of them - it wasn't supposed to land _quite_ that close to them, so that shocked reaction is quite real 🥴😊
Years latter at a Babylon 5 convention the actress who played the news anchor got a standing ovation when she appeared on a panel. She was so touched she cryed, she had no idea she created such an impact Sweet.
Probably the best "miscasting" in the history of TV. For the role of Major Ryan JMS actually wanted a different actor, but only remembered the last name in the moment and so they accidentally cast the "wrong" McGillen. By the time they noticed, the contracts had been signed. But it turned out that this "wrong" McGillen was pretty much perfect casting... except they had to quickly get a new uniform made for him. ^^ Also the panic of the ISN ancors wasn't entirely acted. The debris was supposed to come down in front of the desk further away from them, but accidentally came down much closer, giving them a good scare.
The trivia for this episode is pretty funny. Somebody already mentioned why Hague had to die, and the joke line used to reference it. The casting for Major Ryan is also pretty funny. JMS was a fan of EVERETT MCGILL, a veteran character actor who had played several military roles and was good at the square jawed, tough leader role. When planning the shoot, JMS couldn't remember McGill's first name, so he told the casting crew to "Get that McGill guy." On the first day of shooting, JMS was surprised to find the more (ahem) portly(?) BRUCE MCGILL on set in costume and ready to go. It was too late to correct, so they went with Bruce, who I think really went to the wall in his line readings.
Interesting titbit that likely has already been mentioned somewhere in the comments somewhere. The Captain of the vessel under attack in the beginning was actually hired (or at least auditioned) completely by a case of the wrong person being brought in. I can't remember if it was JMS but someone with clout had wanted a certain actor for the role and brought in this actor thinking he was someone else with similar or the same name.
This is by far my most favourite Babylon 5 episode of all time and it won a Hugo Award in 1997 for Best Dramatic Presentation. What an understatement. This episode is absolutely the most epic space battle of any SciFi series I have ever seen. This is the epitome of superb science fiction in every sense. That's why I STILL watch Babylon 5. The overriding story arc makes it so much better than so many other series. It's just gripping. You just care about and believe in all the characters. Medusa - your reactions mirror mine. I still have my heart in my mouth watching this episode and I have watched it so many times. Wonderful to share it with you. ❤
Such a wonderful thing to see this getting uploaded! I love how this show has set up its universe that when its points of stability get knocked down that it can't be anything than nerve-racking.
The best episode of the series. The trajectory of the series changes after this episode. And when I first saw this episode when it aired so many years ago, the CGI was stunning. My eyes were hurting after the battle scene. Just a wonderful piece of writing, acting, and filming.
Sorry I'm a little late to the party. I just wanted to let you know that I grew up on Babylon 5, and watching you see it for the first time, especially THIS EPISODE... it's giving me chills and a lot of joy. So thank you for sharing.
Episodes like this are the reason why season 1 is considered slow. The writer had the brains to build the world slowly. Nowadays the standard way of writing is to jump right into the action, but doing no building.
Your comment that "it's just Clark that's the problem." The thing is, fascist movements don't maintain power unless there is widespread support. There had been a lot of anti-alien, and specifically anti-Minbari, sentiment that Clark and his people had fanned.
Another trivia fact about General Hague: his name might very well come from the city of The Hague (Den Haag) in the Netherlands. It's also called the city of peace and justice and where, among other things, the ICC (international criminal court) sits. That is, where president Clark - after bombing civilians - would have to answer for war crimes.
What tripped me up is the Hague is a homophone for 'Haig' and General Haig in World War One was notorious for how he led countless soldiers to their deaths due to his inflexibility.
Everyone I have been able to get to watch this show has always had this episode as one of their favorites. It is a payoff for almost two seasons of building of little changes until we get of the biggest of shit status quo shifts of the show.
The recent occasion with Marina Ovsyannikova entering the studio with an anti-war protest sign really reminded me of the ISN scene in this. Very brave woman.
Lmao, your reactions are hilarious Medusa! They're exactly the ones I had when I first saw this - I was about 14 when it aired, and taped the episode off of my tv. I still have the tape somewhere, but the battle scene portion is probably worn out through how many times I watched it as a teen 😂 Babylon 5 will always be one of the greatest pieces of science fiction ever created, and this episode is possibly my single favorite one of the entire series.

"They're bombing Mars" and that ISN scene are just so...OOF! I can't come up with a better word than horrifying. And I like the way these scenes and the fight between Earthforce ships are together in this episode. You start of with the military fighting each other and the commentary of how they know the folks they're fighting. Then the discussion about Clark and Sheridan assuming he won't be able to do much about the colonies. So when that guy says, "They're bombing Mars", not only is there the horror of bombing people _living under a dome because there's no atmosphere_, it's the shock because they legitimately didn't think Clark would go that far. Even after everything, it didn't even occur to them that killing civilians like this was on the table. So you go from the zoom out view of seeing civilians bombed to the close up view of the attack on ISN. There's already a good comment on why this scene is great, so I won't repeat it all, but again you get to see the shock that Clark was not only willing to take out ISN but use the military to do it even though ISN had at that point been doing what they wanted.
I know it's tempting to blame it all on Clark, but he had a lot of help from people who shared his ideology. I think it was Ben Franklin who said that those who value security over freedom are unworthy of either and soon loose both.
Did someone mention that that wife of the Emperor was played by Majel Barett, who was close to actual SciFi Royalty? Ex-wife of Gene Roddenberry, "Number one" in the very first Trek pilot episode (the character will be back in the new Captain Pike series), Nurse and later Doctor Chapel in the original series and some appearances in the movies. And, last but not least, of course also Lwaxwana Troi, Deana's mother in Star Trek the Next Generation. AND the voice of the Enterprise's computer. :D And she was a really lovely lady. :)
Some back story - the agent of the actor playing General Hague also booked him for an episode of DS9 on the calendar for the same time... Given the choice of one or the other, the actor chose DS9... Never cross JMS, no key character is indispensable, and JMS can write around any hole in the story as we will find out later (I will NOT spoil this for our host, don't you, either - and yes, I am talking about a shakedown mission on a warlock class cruiser). So, JMS killed off Hague, closing the door for ANY future appearances... Ironically the character he had on DS9 got killed in that episode, too. There is an amusing out-take regarding the revelation of General Hague's death - look it up but beware of potential spoilers.
Gotta say Medusa, when you started putting out B5 reactions, I never would have expected the releases to catch up to Farscape in terms of season/episode number. 😳
The one we've been waiting for (well many of us I'm sure). I remember when we first saw this episode it just blew us away - nothing even remotely like this had been on TV before.
This episode was such an amazing event for me when I watched it back when it originally aired. I was still a young teen and to see a show change so drastically and dramatically was eye opening because back then overarching storylines were non-existent in television apart from a few multi-episode arcs that would happen. As for the tears...they'll come again. Trust me.

The female newscaster's panicked expression as the debris falls and the ISN feed is cut is genuine: the stage hand dropping the debris dropped it too close and it almost hit her (I imagine it was probably styrene so wouldn't have hurt too much but still must've been disconcerting for the actor!)

One of my favorites..... "Where is General Hague?" "He's on Deep Space Nine, his agent double booked him. You will have to deal with me sir"

One of the best outtakes. He could have gone even further with the "Joe met Everett McGill at a restaurant, but when it came time to cast the role couldn't remember his first name saying 'get me that McGill guy.' So here I am, Bruce McGill."

The moment when the ISN anchor turns her head to stare at the producer when he says troops are moving in on the ISN tower. Brilliant. No words needed.
