Served 30 yrs in the Army -- retired 24 yrs ago -- and experienced field rations as they progressed from C-Rats (cans) to MRE's. MRE's were made to sustain military members for 1 day if need be and provided mega calories. In the beginning, everything was eaten cold until the chemical heating packs were introduced post Desert Storm. You opened the bag and divided up the contents for the day. The main meal was eaten directly out of the food bag with a long handled spoon. You didn't look at it -- you didn't smell it -- you just ate it. Picky eaters had to sustain themselves on crackers/bread with the jelly/peanut butter/cheese but after a while, they ate the main meal without hesitation. MRE's also contained dehydrated fruit that you reconstituted with water from your canteen. During Desert Storm, we exchanged field rations with the Brits, French, and Germans and the German rations -- stored in cans -- were judged the best.
Our local drive thru food bank gave us 2 boxes of military MRE's. There was 12 pkgs. All different in a box. So we got 2 of each of 12 different ones. My hubby has been taking them to work for lunches. He has liked all of them that he has tried. I can eat them as I am allergic to gluten and dairy. But they looked and smell good. And yes, they have a lot packed in those pkgs. Even pkgs of candy in some of them. His favorite was one that he didnt think he would like. Lentil and bean stew. But he really found out he likes Lentils. So i have a ton of Lentils of different colors. So ive been finding recipes to use them in. They were giving a lot out at that drive thru food pantry. Then my hubby works at a gas station. And a guy gave my hubby a box of 12 military MRE's. My hubby was stoked!😊
I purchased dehydrated beef, chicken, veggies & fruit from Costco ( on sale ). Someone said, you could have just purchased MREs. I think my purchase is far better. Thanks for the demonstration and review. Blessings from Texas! 🙏🏼❤️
I work at a commissary at one of the military bases here in North Carolina. One job i am tasked with is maintaining the display of MREs that we sell. Commissaries have special permission to sell MREs individually and by the case. I will tell you that chili mac (#10) is one that I cannot keep in stock and one that cannot seem to sell is jalapeno beef patty (#19), nobody wants that. Having grown up around the military my entire life I can confirm that military guys only get one MRE a day that's why they have a lot more in them most likely and they need a lot of calories to maintain in times of war/conflict or in the feild. I think they have like over 3000 calories per MRE.
@@bluehairedbingobabe im not in the military. I am a civilian employee at the commissary. I grew up around the military because my dad was in for 20 years.
Maybe the military only get one MRE a day, so it has more in it? The sweet potato smoothie probably has nutrition and some fiber, so maybe for a child or adult with chewing problems? When Hurricane Wilma wiped us out in S. Florida, the Red Cross fed us for 2 days. One meal was plain spaghetti with tomato sauce with green peas mixed in. If you are hungry enough...the main things we wanted was coffee in the morning and cold water.
The differences have to do with the population expected to consume the packet and the cost. Military MREs are meant to sustain a young person, likely male, who is physically active for an extended period, and this is their only source of nutrition for an entire day so calorie content is high. Military persons are assets so caring for them is important. The civilian packet is for a wide range of persons experiencing a hardship. The packets for them are just to sustain life. Civilians are not assets so low cost is a priority.
If you’re starving you would feel fortunate to have anything to eat. I detest canned spaghetti and anything unhealthy…. But as I said before… if I as starving I would eat it and give thanks. Nice video. 💚
This perspective was entertaining and the results surprised me. I expected the civilian mre to be better than the military. Thank you for demonstrating with the kids! Peace and Blessings to you all!🍂
Shrug, some meals are better than others, but hunger provides its own flavor, so to speak. You quickly get tired of them, but they still do the job. In the field, you have to be careful because your system isn't used to them, and that can affect your ability to regulate bowel movements. The meals have changed a lot over the years. We switched from C-rats to MRE's in Basic Training (1984) at Ft. Benning. Some of the C-rats were great, and some, well, let's just say it was educational. When possible, once we were in our actual units and in the field, we brought things like hot sauce, and snacks to give us a variety. Now, they have heaters in the meals, which helps, as we just tossed the aluminum foil packets on an engine block to warm them up (Jeeps or Mechanized), but again, things evolved so there were more options. We got small squad stoves for coffee/cocoa, and that helped morale quite a bit. People would trade things back and forth, but whoever got fed last, got the least popular ones unless steps were taken to make it somewhat 'fair'. In the field, they tried to get us at least one warm meal a day, usually breakfast. T-Rats came out around 1990, and I've heard they were better, but again, any time you try and cook for a lot of people, quality often suffers when your focus is on quantity. I was in the Infantry, and we called MRE's: Meals Rejected by Ethiopia.

Civilian MREs must adapt to feeding a family instead of an adult in the military. Children normally don't drink hot drinks, like coffee, and many kids are allergic to nuts.

Good thing we have a tote full of MRE’s. We are in a hurricane area in FL and my husband was recently stationed at a Marine base in NC where he was in the field a ton for training. He would field his MRE’s before going out which just means he would take his favorite items from multiple MRE’s and make his own. His favorite combo was the Zapplesauce with a sponge cake or apple muffin. He would combine the two for his breakfast.
Bri could have at least tried the food, good thing she wasn't hungry like the poor people in the mountains, you would eat anything if you're hungary. That civilian MRE could had a little more food to make a full meal. Thanks Art for the info.

Interesting...I think the military meals would be better because they calories required for a soldier would be high. I think also if you are literally starving with other option, you won't care you will eat anything....sadly
Sadly it right. Eating dirt is a real thing, my friends lived in a country where dirt cakes are baked and sold just proving needed minerals. they looked like dirt pita breads.
Very interesting information. It was interesting getting the kids opinions. Yeah, why send people in a community so very little to eat when they need so much more & they don't taste good. So great to see the kids again, we have missed them & Bri.
Use to live on an army base and my friend's husband's use to give me the left over MRE after they were back from the field and for some reason I loved them., so did my one son. We loved them. If the box all of them came in was open, they had to get rid of what was left in them. So, I got them all the time. At that time, I was trying to gain weight although I never did gain any weight. They are high in calories. All my friends had so many or were sick of them. I was a navy wife so thought they were cool. Their husbands were army cooks too. So, they got all that was left over. Unopened. In the navy my husband was on flights, and they packed a bagged lunch. I'd get left over ones that were not eaten. Also, bagged breakfast too. I separate out all that was useable. Like chips and canned fruit, crackers and cheese. Sweet rolls and deserts like twinkies all individually wrapped like you get them at the store. Put them in the freezer or store. Sandwiches I'd not keep. We married he was not rated at the time. So, we got offered them a lot. Did help on grocery cost. Little pop top fruits were like canned fruit.
My dad (Air Force) would bring the military ones home every so often for us to try. My favorite was the pork patty. I also liked the chiclets gum. My husband (Army) liked the ham slice & the beef patty & hated chicken a la king & the chocolate brownie that he called a 'track pad'.
The military MREs are designed to provide a calorie dense meal to someone who's only food supply in the field is only those meals, looks like that civilian one is designed with the assumption that regular food supplies will be available at some point and they are stop gap meals. The civilian one seems to have less refined sugar content and a nod to " healthy" foods and feeding children as well. That said , give me a regular military MRE any day not that civilian one.
Lemon Poppy seed pound cake??? Drug testing might show positive for opiods after that pound cake, sadly because I love poppy seeds in baked goods. Odd that the military would provide that item when they don't allow herbs like golden seal because of drug testing.
The real difference in the two is probably the protein and calories. I remember when my husband first went to war they had to live off one MRE a day for awhile. They make the military MRE’s high in calories and protein for a reason. I’m not sure about the civilian one as I’m not familiar with it. It would be interesting if you included that in the video.
In the late ’70’s my husband at the time was in the army and we were so broke so we ate MRE’s. Not the best but when you’re hungry it’s not that bad. 😊
There is a guy on TH-cam who makes his own with store bought items. But, the items he chooses need to be warmed up and he uses a trucker’s lunch box. You would need power of some sort for the trucker’s lunch box. A generator or use it in your car. I guess I would prefer to invest in a portable cook stove instead of a trucker’s lunch box. I think the portable cook stove would allow you to cook more at a time.
MREs are 1 per day per GI... Personally I liked C-rats better in some ways. Civilian MREs are designed to be eaten by children and families. Different target and different nutrients requirements. GI MREs are KNOWN for causing gut backups. Civilian ones are not.
lol all the APACK meals we got in 2022 had red beans in them, with the pasta and sauce, we didn't have a meat sauce just a Pasta and vegetable with sauce
They can make better. I know it’s not supposed to be gourmet but it could taste better. I wonder if both meals are made by the same company. Still praying for everyone. Have a safe & blessed day from southeastern NC.
LOOK AT THE CALORIES! Some over 5,000! My son went into the Marines a thin, fit young man and after his first tour on MREs as a combat engineer in Iraq, he gained over 50#, and the toll that it did on his joints and ligaments gaining all that weight. For a kids like yours that’s a few tablespoons to get your Daily calories!
You know when you're in a dire situation and a disastrous situation you're not going to put your nose up to the food that you're given. Just say thank you and be thankful to God for it, because you don't know when your next meal is. So the MREs might not be to your so-called satisfaction cuz you don't understand why is a package packaged and you might think that they're disgusting but that disgusting food that you're turning your nose up are actually feeding people who have gone through such a tragic situation and have lost everything and that is food in their bellies or in the bellies of their children. So your point to testing these out is to do exactly what??? Is it just to see what's in there and put your nose up concerning it? LOL.
@@kinthecountry4301 their job is to feed those in Desperate need and in desperate situations. Their job is not to make it taste to your liking, or make it healthy as you say. So to one person one thing is healthy while to another person the same food is not healthy.... When you're hungry, when you're desperate, when you're in dire desperation or dire need, you are not thinking of gee I wonder if this is going to be healthy for me ? That doesn't even come up to a person that is in a dire situation or starving are super hungry cuz they lost it all.
I remember eating C-rats when I was a kid. Everything came in cans, including the bread! I didn’t like the main dishes, but the desserts were pretty good. I enjoyed the Chiclets gum. I’m glad our military people get better meals than that civilian stuff! I’ve tried MREs, and they’re not all that great. If the civilian version is worse, I can’t imagine how awful it is! That smoothie sounded disgusting!
I like the I would eat that in an emergency and like it and the I would eat that in an emergency and not like it. He knows the reality of the food needs.
My hubby was in the military for 20+ years and still talks about the chilimac. He brought a couple of MRE's home one evening and we prepared them for our dinner. (just for fun) I must say, I was Not impressed. He also said that after eating MRE's it was common for the guys to be seriously constipated.
That's true. I think they made MREs that way purposefully. My neighbor, a Vietnam vet, told me that diarhrea was a huge problem due to disentary. On patrrol you couldn't just stop, go into the bushes, take off your gear and drop your drawers to take a dump. He said the guys would cut the seam in their pants so they could quickly and easily take a squirt and keep moving. Hense, the development of MREs to help stop the diahrea problem. They went way overboard causing the opposite problem.
The government just doesn't care about civilians. Thats why the civilian mre aren't as good as military mre . Sending Prayers 🙏 and Love 🤟to everyone.Helene was devastating to alot of different states not just Florida especially NW North Carolina GOD BLESS ALL
O if your at home with power or even a grill you can boil water and throw the main meal packet in the boiling water for like 5 minutes and they work way better then the heaters as they don't always work properly, o even the cheese spread in the military one is way better heated some and kneaded before eating. Yeah those were not heated up enough the main meals are not very good unless heated properly honestly when there hard like that there not heated enough they need to be like regular food were there kind of saucy not hard still!
I know what you're trying to do with the acronym, but it really should be Gaza instead. There were videos of someone from Gaza who tried at least one MRE provided by the Biden Administration attempts to save Gaza and the main comments were that the mres were disgusting and unedible. What Americans didn't realize is that Israel has been sending more than enough fresh food to Gaza since the fighting started last year. Ethiopians are not as well taken care of and would probably be happy to have anything to eat. Just letting you know about the real world.
Also maybe you need to have the water pH metres to test water for cooking bathing all the time if not yet fully repaired restored the reservoirs and the water treatment plants to WHO UN standard You know you are a developed country super power not the 3rd world country under developed You USA and countries like you are world trend setters So that is safer for the time being If all can tick yes their water is pH acidity alkalinity safe value you can go start cooking those donated foods using your clean water supply Just simple common sense law of survival for the grid

My dad (Air Force) would bring the military ones home every so often for us to try. My favorite was the pork patty. I also liked the chiclets gum. My husband (Army) liked the ham slice & the beef patty & hated chicken a la king & the chocolate brownie that he called a 'track pad'.
Yuck. The pork patty was the worst. That was the one that everyone tried to trade away.
I'd bet that smoothie is for young children, like the fruit and veggie pouches kids like.
Thanks guys..so fun to watch!!
Thank you for all y’all do in service to the Lord
The real difference in the two is probably the protein and calories. I remember when my husband first went to war they had to live off one MRE a day for awhile. They make the military MRE’s high in calories and protein for a reason. I’m not sure about the civilian one as I’m not familiar with it. It would be interesting if you included that in the video.
They did.
We have to leave like 10 minutes ago 😂
I believe if that is all you have to eat...you woll eat it.
if you were hungry enough you would eat it :)
In the late ’70’s my husband at the time was in the army and we were so broke so we ate MRE’s. Not the best but when you’re hungry it’s not that bad. 😊
Getting rid of items that don’t sell.
Give it away and claim the tax credit.
Always nice to have a cynic Comment once in a while. Makes you appreciate the people who actually have a heart and soul.
Was that you I saw in Justin Rhodes's latest video? That was very cool of you to help out.
Your kids making faces was a hoot!😂
I had had those MREs after Katrina…I liked most of them..
Ooooo, not laughing but "kinda smells like bread". "Oooo, that smells something special" 🙊 🤣
If I was starving I guess I would eat it. Gotta give credit to the kids for trying it Blessings

Thank You!
A good test would be to get a table full of kids, give half of them the military meal and half the civilian meal, let them react.
They can make better. I know it’s not supposed to be gourmet but it could taste better. I wonder if both meals are made by the same company. Still praying for everyone. Have a safe & blessed day from southeastern NC.
The chili mac MRE made me very sick! It lived up to it's name of Meal Resisting Entry and Meal Ready for Exit... -Mike
Nice to daddy kiddos time ❤
LOOK AT THE CALORIES!
I have always liked the chilly Mac but the peanut butter one is good too but I like peanut butter anyway
One tip for eating these… eat out of the package hahahah! But seriously it helps vs fully seeing it.
LOL.
The people making this stuff aren’t in an emergency. They can make it appealing and healthy. It’s their job.
@@jessicapabon2105 Let them eat sawdust!🙄
I agree
Lots more protein and calories in the military mre.
The MREs usually have a higher protein content
Where can MRE be purchased. And can Military MRE be purchased?
Yes. Amazon
@@jessicapabon2105 thank you
Maybe the smoothie gives some nutrients that people under stress need
I remember eating C-rats when I was a kid. Everything came in cans, including the bread! I didn’t like the main dishes, but the desserts were pretty good. I enjoyed the Chiclets gum.
I’m glad our military people get better meals than that civilian stuff! I’ve tried MREs, and they’re not all that great. If the civilian version is worse, I can’t imagine how awful it is! That smoothie sounded disgusting!
My son and hubby are both military. My hubby cringed watching this. lol
I wonder if they added vitamin supplements to the civillian main dishes
We had to eat mre the military one was better. Also Salvation Army breakfast/lunch boxes were great.
Nothing beats C-rat cheese!
Sweet potato smoothie
Sent it because no one would order it😂😂😂so they had tons
Probably 😂😂❤
I like sweet potatoes and they're more nutrient dense than applesauce and mango.
They need to get with NASA and use the food fed to the astronauts
Wow it's hard to watch with the jumping edits! It sets off my migraine reflex 🤷🏼♀️
I'm sure the military ones are heavier in calories then the civilian ones.
Lol, I'll take my chances with pemmican and hard tack. That does not look healthy.
😮😊❤chili Mac.
You ate it?
YUM POISON
💜👍🏻👍🏻✌🏼
Meal Refused by Ethiopia.
👀👀❤❤🙏🙏
😊
🎂👏👍
I would NOT eat that. Better FAST for a couple days and use canned beef or fish only. Would be much HEALTHIER than that SEEDOILS and SOY 🗑
Also maybe you need to have the water pH metres to test water for cooking bathing all the time if not yet fully repaired restored the reservoirs and the water treatment plants to WHO UN standard
You know you are a developed country super power not the 3rd world country under developed
You USA and countries like you are world trend setters
So that is safer for the time being
If all can tick yes their water is pH acidity alkalinity safe value you can go start cooking those donated foods using your clean water supply
Just simple common sense law of survival for the grid
*essa comida aí não tem uma boa aparência não 😝*
Good thing we have a tote full of MRE’s. We are in a hurricane area in FL and my husband was recently stationed at a Marine base in NC where he was in the field a ton for training. He would field his MRE’s before going out which just means he would take his favorite items from multiple MRE’s and make his own. His favorite combo was the Zapplesauce with a sponge cake or apple muffin. He would combine the two for his breakfast.
