Alfred Weber, a German economist, formulated the Theory of Industrial Location, which is also known as Weber's Theory of Industrial Location or the Least Cost Theory. Weber's work, particularly outlined in his book "Theory of the Location of Industries" published in 1909, focused on explaining why industries tend to locate where they do. Here are the key principles of Weber's theory: Location Triangle: Weber envisioned an equilateral triangle representing the relationship between the three primary factors influencing industrial location decisions: raw materials, markets, and transportation costs. Least Cost Principle: The core concept of Weber's theory is the idea of minimizing costs. Firms seek to minimize production costs, including transportation, labor, and agglomeration (clustering of industries) costs. Transportation Costs: Weber emphasized the significance of transportation costs in industrial location decisions. He argued that industries would locate where the combined costs of transporting raw materials to the factory and finished goods to the market are minimized. Weight-Gaining and Weight-Losing Industries: Weber classified industries into two types: weight-gaining and weight-losing. Weight-gaining industries are those where the finished product is heavier than the raw materials. These industries tend to locate near the market to minimize transportation costs. Weight-losing industries are those where the raw materials are heavier than the finished product. These industries tend to locate near the source of raw materials to minimize transportation costs. Agglomeration Economies: Weber recognized the importance of agglomeration, where industries cluster together to share common infrastructure, services, and labor pools, leading to cost savings and increased efficiency. Isotropic Surface: Weber assumed an isotropic surface, which means a uniform distribution of resources and transportation costs in all directions. While this assumption simplifies the model, it may not accurately reflect the real-world geography. It's important to note that Weber's Theory has been criticized for its simplifications and assumptions, and it may not fully capture the complexity of modern industrial location decisions. However, it laid the groundwork for subsequent theories and discussions on industrial geography and location economics.
Complete agree with you. Rajtanil mam videos are best for upsc. I have cleared prelims twice using this resource. This theory suggests businesses pick up location with cheap transport, affordable labours for efficiency and cost cutting.
