The Marantz sounds like the music is being presented to me on a platter and it's great, but the Denon feels more like room audio with the wider soundstage and slightly more decay on vocals. Based on this comparison I'd go with the Denon personally.
I know everyone is drooling about Marantz brand name, but in this demo the Denon has a much better sound stage . Mids and highs are chrisper whilst retaining the bass. Also the Denon compliments the speakers much better. Knopfler sounds like hes singing behind a curtain on the Marantz. Has to be the Denon for me in this setup.
I now own a Marantz solid state from CERCA 2001 and it is a very sure and steady amp. The sound is just very smooth and it just has such a nice consistent sound. I am getting older so maybe I approve of more uniform sound with no surprises....less dynamic.

I appreciate this test. Within the limits of individual sound card/chip amplification differences one can still hear very appreciable differences between both amps. The Marantz sounds richer overall (on guitars especially) but there is something wrong with the way Mark Knopfler's voice sounds through that amp. He sounds as if he is singing within the confines of a cave or church hall. Unless the mastering crew have added a reverb effect to his voice, it doesn't sound natural. The difference is particularly evident when his voice tone is played through the Denon and through the Marantz again. I can hear it in the comparo between the same Marantz and the Onkyo 9150 as well. Maybe it's just the synergy between the Marantz and those speakers but it certainly doesn't work for me. I was about to buy a PM6004 on the used market but this has me thinking that the Denon would be a better choice for me. For those who still think that similarly priced amplifiers all sound the same, this is a clear eye opener ! (or ear opener)...
I agree wholeheartedly. I own this amplifier. Very transparent and warm sounding though my Klipsch bookshelves and it will drive headphones effortlessly.

The Denon is impressive, and I own Denon myself, more open and slightly less warm, but I feel the Denon would sound great with DSP and at higher listening volumes. I listen to my Denon with Polk Rti12's at 85-90 db. Sounds great. So, although the Marantz has shown well here.... I am not ready to replace my Pioneer yet- for me so far in my audiophile travels Pioneer sounds the best.

Both are equally good. I find the Marantz to have a slightly increased bass and treble whereas the Denon sounds very neutral. Also the soundstage is much wider on the Denon compared to the Marantz. End of the day, you could adjust the tone controls on both the amps to match the sound quality, however, I feel the Denon might throw a hefty meaty bass if the bass is adjusted whereas the Marantz may bring in those sweet sparking treble and a bit of a boosted mid bass.

Marantz is a bit narrow. Denon is more expressive. My worry is that the denon may sound a bit sad in emotion. This will make me pick the Marantz, as I'd dislike to sadden all my music.
Does s.o. know if the Marantz or Denon would be capable to replace my Technics SU-7700 from 1976 ? It was serviced and is in 1A condition. But I want to try something newer to go with my Oberon 3 speakers. Thanks for your help.

To my ears the Marantz sounds more neutral, subtle and refined. Knopfler's vocals are without grain. The Denon sounds more dynamic, has more presence in width and depth, but is less refined in the high mids and highs, it clearly has an edge. Still in this comparison, with this room and this music I favor the Denon. The Marantz seems better suited for smaller rooms with smaller speakers. The Denon as always has no trouble driving large speakers. Funny, these exact differences in sound between Denon and Marantz remain for decades already. My old Marantz PM 7200 compared similarly to the Denon PMA 1500MKII at the time: the Denon bolder and overal more dynamic, the Marantz more refined and neutral.

Yea, you can get a lot of information by listening on a normal speaker or headphone (also try different ones). You need to build your ear and understanding of what you are looking for. You may get an idea about all kind of aspects up to the material of the speaker, woofer, tweeter etc. Even though it is not translated one to one to your laptop speaker or headphone, it is still giving you enough clues.

Klipsch speakers would be a good match for the Denon in theory to smooth out the overall output....in theory.
It's no theory...... klipsch and Denon sound great together. Right now I am listening to my Polk Rti12's with Denon and it is fantastic.

how much current has pma 800..Only 50 watts but the power is great, and the canton chrono it's an hard driver..Great denon

If you blindfolded me, I'd be hard pressed. I think the Marantz rumbles the very low Bass, which gives it away.
