  • A quick video of this Riley’s first time back on the road. Some sorting and fettling still needed, but so far, so good.
This car has a 5-main 1800 MGB engine, a Datsun 5-speed, and a Datsun rear end, with MGB hubs and front discs, plus a set of Minilites to round out the package!

Indeed. Riley was right up at the top of the BMC brand structure, along with Wolseley. Lots of wood and leather, especially for a small car in the ‘50s. They brought it to North America in hopes of catching some of the market that Volkswagen had tapped into, but the price was just too high.

Had a Wolesley 1500 with an 1800 B engine fitted, 1975 two of us drove all the way from Birmingham to Malaga Spain for three weeks and back to UK. We only broke One half shaft.
I t did 100mph with ease on the empty roads through France and Spain and averaged about 33mpg over the whole 3,500 mile trip and we blew everything off that raced off from the traffic lights

Hugo, whereabouts are you and your car located?
You can find the diagram in the PDF scan of the Workshop manual that is available on the Riley Motor Club website. They also have a great forum there that you can join, and the club in general is helpful. Lastly, there’s a Facebook group.

Hello Tom. Nice car! I got my 59 Riley shortly before I first watched this video, after having had a Wolseley 1500 in the 90's during a spate in the UK. This car came from Sacramento, CA and I have it in Washington now. It is in great shape, though it needs some smoothing out. I'm surprised by your acceleration, quiet upper engine and braking... not to mention how little roll you have. I'm guessing you have some engine/etc. mods on this car? What sort of things?

...sorry ...just expanded your comments. Explains a lot. That's probably a little further than I'll go. :)

Thank you! This is a friend’s car, and it has a 5-main MGB engine and Datsun 5-speed transmission. Having said that, my car is stock, and is still quite smooth and quick. They do tend to roll in the corners, ”dragging the door handles”, as I tend to say, but a Morris Minor anti-roll bar kit can be adapted to work. I like it as is, lends a bit of flavor. The Riley race cars were fitted with anti-roll bars in period, though.

@@TomRymes So, am I correct in saying that you have your OWN Riley One Point Five, and a local friends car with the 1800 block nearby? If so... wow! The only time I have seen more than one of these in one place was at a rally in Wiltshire the UK. Still working on getting my brakes less spongy and the flat spots out of my acceleration, as well as some clunkiness out of the steering and suspension, but they are great cars - every fun about a Morris Minor but with better handling and more torque. Where are you located? Do you run a car repair shop, or....? Hobby?

It’s a hobby, Scott. There are a dozen or so of us Riley owners in the US and Canada that are in loose contact. Definitely join the forum at the Riley Motor Club UK and the Facebook group. Lots of good information out there! Also, the shared components with the MGA, Magnette, and Minor do make sourcing parts surprisingly easy.
