THANK YOU both for this topic!🤗 I was born with one kidney & now 53 yo with stage 3 CKD. I have been whole food plant-based for 2 years now & have remained stable these past 2 years, and all labs in midline except for proteinuria. Dr. Hashmini I wish you were my Nephrologist- you are so smart, kind & caring! I really appreciate the evidenced based sources in your discussions. Michelle- you are awesome & I love that you really focus on not needing animal protein to still have a balanced & healthy diet. I follow you on FB & just made an instagram so I can follow you there as well. I have watched all of your podcasts to date & am so happy I found you both! Keep up the great work & I will continue to share & watch. 🥗👏🏼😄
I had partial nephrectomy almost a year ago, due to a duplex kidney double ureter situation and a lot of these questions I asked my urologist and he gave me very minimal answers on or didn’t really tell me what to expect after surgery. He was absolutely wonderful but a very minimal straight to the point man so any time I would over exert myself and be in pain the next day I would be so confused bc I was expecting to be fully healed by now. So this was very helpful for me, THANK YOU for answering so many of my unanswered questions !!!
Had a radical nephrectomy , left kidney due to stage 1 renal cell carcinoma. Unfortunately my urologist who did the surgery only said don't worry the one will do the work of both. No advice on you should start now on eating a very healthy diet. So I had already had thyroid cancer before this and a thyroidectomy due to cancer, and again hysterectomy due to cervical cancer. Two cancers before the kidney. Now, fast forward 20 years since nephrectomy, due to my diligence looking at my labwork, I was told by my Primary and my Endocrinologist that I am in stage 2CKD. My eGFR is 64. I am on Metformin for diabetes, but have lowered my sugar by 20 points since the CKD news. I'm not giving up and hope to maintain or improve my CKD. I am waiting on getting a referral to see a Nephrologist and then a Renal Dietition.
Thank you for this video. I`m having one of my kidneys removed in a week, due to Renal Cell Carcinoma. You have given me a lot of good info, as well as helped me form some questions for my Dr. going forward
I am on a carnivore diet as it's the only thing that reduces my inflammation. I tried vegetarian but it didn't help. Removing my carbs helped me the most. Changed my diet after they found my mass with IF 16 hrs a day. I am having a radical nephrectomy next month.
Looks like I am going to have a nephrectomy in the next two weeks. No biopsy, so not sure if it is cancer, but the mass is 6.5cm so docs want it gone regardless of cancer status. Just curious if you are still on the carnivore diet and how it is going for you? I tried it about a year ago, but only made it a couple of weeks. Looks like with one kidney, I have to reduce veggies that have oxalates, but I’m curious how carnivore works for people with only one kidney, because I may have to go back to that due to weight and inflammation issues.
Was born with one kidney, my blood pressure was kind of high and it scared me now as I’m 29. Vitamin k2, vitaminD3, potassium, and stress management are key.
My uncle is getting a kidney removed because of a mass. I would like to get in touch with the strong warriors and know their perspective towards life. God bless us all .
I had a partial nephrectomy 2 weeks ago. It was the scariest surgery I've ever had. I'm doing pretty good. I didn't have a appetite for almost 2 weeks. I need to change my eating habits
Thank you for discussing this topic. I am having a nephrectomy in December and just need to know what I'm in for. It is .03 mass . Thank you also wanting to know how to change my eating habits to help my other kidney. I have high cholesterol.
Enjoyed your informative video. I've been a prolific kidney stone producer since I was 27 years old, I'm now 74. My issue with your video is it doesn't touch on the special dietary restrictions for stone producers with Crohn's disease. Many plant-based items and green leafy vegetables are absolute no no's because of their high oxalate content. yes, there are plant-based foods that are safe when on a low oxalate diet, but the list is somewhat limited. A video on dealing with this issue would be helpful.
How often do you get an MRI of your torso? My kidney was the size of a rugby football and was found purely by chance from an abdominal hernia. After all, doctors love giving pills to treat symptoms, rather than finding the cause... So unless you are showing physical symptoms, chances are, regular checkups won't catch it before a nephrectomy is needed. Other than high blood pressure, I had no obvious symptoms and felt just fine beforehand. My doctor had me on two blood pressure medicines. Expensive. That was my 'very lucky' experience. P.S. 58 yrs old male. I am now on a Keto diet and eating healthy. My 55 lbs weight loss (so far) over six months, is just a bonus to cutting sugar, milk, processed foods, and carbs with the focus on Non-Inflamatory foods. AND I eat all the eggs and meat I want, but not in access. Now, normal ranges in blood work. Kidney function is good. Blood pressure quickly returned to normal. I now take ZERO medications. Doing great! Feeling great! I highly recommend Keto. :-)
Dr Hashmi thank you for your response for doing a video on losing weight through water only fasting for the ckd patient over 65 plus. Your insight would really help the lower ckd patients group to understand fully the effects of water only fasting on impaired kidneys. I am gladly sharing the information that some patients in the 65 plus age group have a very slow metabolism making it very hard to lose any weight and water only fasting has proven a very effective way of losing 7 to 9 kilos over 12 to 14 days. In 2015 prepaing for a 100km Oxfam charity walk had a blood test done and found my both kidneys function had dropped to egfr 37. Three years ago my egfr dropped to 26. I water only fasted for 14 days and after refeeding for couple of weeks on plant based diet egfr bounced back to 47. Creatinine dropped from 214 to 125.I t stayed at the level for almost a year and then dropped black to 37. I have done couple more 7 days and 12 day water only fast to bring my weight down from 112kg to 75kg since 2015. During last Christmas and new year I relaxed and gained almost 9kg to hit 83.8kg. A fortnight ago I had done a 13 day water only fast and lost 7 kg at egfr 35. At the end of the fast the egfr dropped to 28 now 79kg .It has not bounced back like the other two times. I am still on plant only diet. Bp is fully under control with 10mg zircol daily. Apart from fluctuating between 90 - 120/ 58-80 . Have never had any other medical issues. Apart from occasional protien in the urine . Just done a urine test to establish if still leaking protien. Now with egfr 28 I am quite concerned and have been doing some research to see what medications are available to preserve the kidney function staying at 28. Been watching utube videos and have come across Dr Rosansky and Dr Gibney discussing SGLT2 and GLP1 drugs for preserving kidney functions in ckd patients with and without diabetes . Looking forward to consulting my GP n the nephrologist to see what they can offer. Please feel welcome to comment if it helps others.
my nephrectomy a radical right, robot nephrouterectomy was on a thurs 8am, surgery was 5 hours maybe, could not abide chicken broth (it tasted like beef) but then jello was fine, (did not vomit at all but felt like ) fri, 7am walking, cath out, urinated then discharged at 11am on fri... my pri care and urologist were awesome, I had had a turbt to remove 2 bladder tumors, then stents in then stents out, stones taken outta the left kidney attempted biopsy right, then nephrouterectomy all in 2 months, then heal time after nephrouterectomy 4 weeks ,, am restricting my diet alot, low sulphur, potassium, salt, sugar, purine, no red meat, and going was doing 4 oz chickent turkey or fish a day, but got gout flare frome 4 oz chicken so cutting that out for a year (I had to go to ER for gout and prednisone ,which made us push back my first keytruda infusion,, it appears the steroids Iwould get for gout would harm the efficacy of keytruda which I will be on for a year, so now,, no lean meat even (am trying to be okay in some soup in small portions because sometimes choice are limited in rural Minnesota) am on allipurinol and trying to build back my kidney function had stage 3 grade 3 clear cell in kidney and stage 1 papilaries in bladder ..have 2 small nodules on lungs we hope are from infection and shoulder lesions so keytruda to me hopefully will reduce recurance odds, but a year long and am scared of losing my job (I used 9 of 12 weeks of FMLA now, and they just let another man go who had stage 4 testicular cancer and his lungs) .. Thankyou for this info, The diet I have for years been on some sort, just gets more restrictive, I came across while hunting recipes from Mediterranean diet sites my gfr was 92 then 52 now 42 I am aiming into the 60's, pre diabetic,
Hi Jay! It sounds like you have been through a lot! We're happy to see that you're focused on your health and diet. We highly recommend working 1:1 with a renal dietitian so they can help customize a plan for you so you don't feel more and more restrictive! Here is a link for a database of renal dietitians: www.kidney.org/ckdrd We hope that helps!

Excellent and very informative, I just subscribed today and wacth all videos, I donated a kidney to my sister back in May 1997, I've done lab tests every year to keep a look on my numbers for Proteine in the urine and eGFR's, the last one done this past Thursday it seems I haven't done well since I like to drink lots of wine and eat meat. I'm going to follow your recomendatiosn about Plant protein lifestyle, good thing I eat lots of vegetables and fruits, my other numbers are doing very well, cholesterol, pothasium, etc. Any comments from you will be appreciated.
Hi Luis! We love that you donated a kidney to your sister and are on top of monitoring/maintaining your kidney health! Keep eating lots of fruits and veggies and we hope the protein episode is helpful for you. We will be diving deeper into protein in upcoming episodes too!
I lost one kidney in nephrectomy one year back. My creatinine is 1 and potassium is 5.3. I am a vegetarian. My blood sugar and blood pressure are under control. Kindly guide
My problem started with kidney stones that obstruct the ureter damaging it and a uteroneocystostomy and reconstructive surgery done , not up to 6weeks another obstruction on the left again what is the fate of my left kidney as it is not excreting waste for 1month

I'm afraid the it depends answer doesn't really apply to a kidney donor because they are screened do not have high blood pressure to not have cholesterol issues to not have diabetes etc
Hello! We recommend working 1:1 with a renal dietitian so they can tell you which specific fruits/veggies to consume. In general though, you want to have a diverse diet and choose fruits/veggies and portions based on your labs (like potassium levels). Many people with CKD or with one kidney have no issues with blood potassium levels and don't have to restrict in their diet. It is highly individualized though.
Thanks so much for watching. First topic starts at 1:40.
My 95 year old father had kidney cancer and a dr. in santa maria, california removed that kidney and he is doing great ! ONLY GOD
