    2nd video I've seen on this subject and this explanation is far superior. I now have a basic understanding of how GPS coordinates work. One thing I noticed, the face of the earth in 2 dimensions represents 180 degrees which is half of 360 degree circle. Makes sense, however, when looking for a point close to 90 W Longitude the starting point is not the edge of the earth, rather it is the prime meridian which is, I'm guessing about 20 degrees from said edge of the earth. It would have been possible to place the prime meridian on the edge merely by moving the point of reference over those 20 or so degrees and I believe would have made this video even better and easier to understand. (Could be wrong though) Cheers

    This guy is very cheerful, helpful, and give plenty of graphics and explanations of coordinates. Love it! (: Coordinates are easy on a map, but talking about how a compass work and how to match bearings, its not so much! Here is me wanting and needing to be an expert navigator! Good thing I still remember this from high school and I am just 25! Hahaha! Cheers mate!

    So at 4:14 the formula you displayed resulted in the coordinates 43.095194. Below that you rounded it down to 43.09. Don't your normally round up when when the last digit is a 5?. Shouldn't it have been "43.10" (or 43.1)?

    The whole How Stuff Works crew seems to be withdrawing from TH-cam. First Cristen Conger abandoned her Stuff Mom Never Told You channel, and now Brainstuff fades away. Wtf, people? I know you're all still doing the podcast. Why no videos?
    Also, has this channel really not uploaded in a year? I could swear this GPS video was uploaded a month ago. Maybe I've slipped into a parallel universe....

    • @williamgourley5613
      @williamgourley5613 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      What you didn't catch is the word "Location" after he said that. Think of it like this: Lines of latitude measure north-south (position) between the poles. Although lines of longitude, or "meridians" run between the North and South Poles, they measure east-west position or "location" on the globe. Hope that makes sense:)

    • @stephenkosciesza2706
      @stephenkosciesza2706 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lines of latitude run east/west. So to go from one line of latitude to another, you travel north/south. Lines of longitude run north/south. So to go from one to another, you go east/west.

    Another thing to remember is that longitude are all great circles. They all travel in perfectly straight lines. Latitude however are not straight lines (except the equator).
    If you follow them on the Earth's surface you are always traveling in a curve veering in either a northerly or southerly direction..

  • @JL-qe5gl
    @JL-qe5gl 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A common method for writing coordinates without using N, S, E, or W is by using + and - to denote direction from the equator or the prime meridian; for example latitude north of the equator is + and south is -, from +90 to -90, longitude is + to the east and - to the west, in the range from 0 to +/- 180 (international date line).

    They are NOT GPS coordinates; that's a misnomer. They are geographical coordinates, given in longitude and latitude. GPS is a high-tech system for determining longitude and latitude; it depends on a system of artificial satellites and computer technology, and can't exist without them. The first efforts at any kind of GPS date from the 1960s. Longitude and latitude, on the other hand, have been around for centuries.

    GPS coordinates do not work like this, you've explained latlong which has nothing to do with GPS coordinates. Furthermore on land navigation is don mostly by coordinates and not by latlong which are two different things. First a geological date is used like WGS84 combined with a grid system like UTM an for military purposes the MGRS is added.

I had viewable streets that are not even visible on the normal map at all. The coordinates I picked were just smack bang in the middle of the village. I tried to see how it works on mobile and got instantly dropped to summer forest... So if you're on mobile (or using something else), it might take a bit of work to find the wintery bits.

      If you assume the i's are 1's and the - are decimal points then you get a place in the Californian desert east of Palm springs and north of Cactus city. :)

    This is a big orange lake in the USA that doesn't have name on google earth and the road that connects to it doesn't have a street view image of it.
    Does anyone know what is it called? And is it really that orange?

    What are the minutes and seconds used for?

    • @stephenkosciesza2706
      @stephenkosciesza2706 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same as inches when your measure feet. 1/60 of a degree is one minute. And 1/60 of a minute is one second. A degree of latitude, and--at the equator--a degree of longitude, is about 69 miles. You probably want to measure a little closer than that.

    Which part of the earth is the front? And which is the back? Is there any? I feel like each country puts their country in the front in movies and such

    • @HDuser100
      @HDuser100 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I understood here, they put Greenwich as a starting point, and started counting from there.

    • @vegemit3506
      @vegemit3506 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no part of earth which is frount or back. Movies put their country in the supposed "frount" probably for easy identification or highlighting.

    • @vegemit3506
      @vegemit3506 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All in all, unless a point of reference is specified, there isn't any frount of back side of earth.

    Here’s my beef with GPS coordinates.
    They’re not GPS coordinates, they’re coordinates. GPS determines the coordinate of s receiver. But the coordinates are different because it’s GPS derived

    0:36 longitude represents east and west.
    02:02 lines of longitude run north and south.
    Now i'm confused.

    • @matomaaa
      @matomaaa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      imagine one point in one longtitude and another in another longitude. you can tell which one is leaning more towards east and west. now if two points of the same longitude are given, they are either norther or souther from each other as they cannot go any more west or east given that they belong to the same longitude (or you may understand that as vertical.)

    • @stephenkosciesza2706
      @stephenkosciesza2706 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lines of longitude run north/south. To go from one line of longitude to another line of longitude, you go east/west.
