I think the perp was already in, removed the dog (did they do forensics/blood work on the dog was he sedated, nope, not done). The arriving kids might have suspected someone was around, pranking them, thought it was Ex-Jack (surprise visit, they were getting back together) hence calling to locate. The hoodie guy could have given a heads up the girls were on their way back. DId they get everyone's phone records that had been at the house? At the frat house? At the grub hut. All the neighbors where the other Jack lived? All pings to all towers within 10 miles 12 hrs before and 72 after? Cast the widest net ...all cell phones of all LE, all students and faculty, and workers.

That explains why the first floor kids were unharmed and one of the girls on the third floor was killed more brutally. Also explains the placement of the boy’s body, who appears to have been standing.

This is a serial killer under the strict definition. All the victims were on the top floor. Two girls in one room, the other two in the other. The red liquid dripping down the foundation wall from the 2nd floor bedroom is heating medium for radiant floor heat. The two survivors were on the first floor, with the dog, dog sitting. The killer came in through the open sliding glass door on the second floor. The killer probably saw the lights go on and off upstairs, he may have even seen his intended target in that time, through the window. It would be worthwhile to check the router log. *Police told reporter that the red liquid was heating oil, it isn't heating oil- it is oil used to heat. It stays red, even when exposed to oxygen. It came from the floor and room where Xana and Ethan would have been, except that Kaylee had vacated her room upstairs, because she was moving out, so Kaylee was in the other room with her friend Madison and the couple were in the other heated room upstairs. The upstairs rooms were very visible from the woods. The killer would have been able to watch the 4 return 2 by 2 and where they went by watching the lights turn on and off. The Father at the memorial service spoke about the two girls dying in the same bed. Another officer familiar with the scene told a reporter that all of the victims were upstairs on the third floor. The survivors told witnesses and police that the sliding glass door was open. The dog, was uninjured, did not try to flee or bark, and was sent directly to the shelter, it was not part of evidentiary collection. As the girls planned on being out very late, it would be logical that they made arrangements for the dog to be taken care of, and it would not be likely that they would have woken up the dog-sitter to get the dog at 3 am.
This is from another commenter- "Medicina Designs 6 hours ago (edited) I think the student are talking to each other about what happened and some are sharing on social media... and on other news comments were posted that the girls downstairs could hear Xana's alarm going but they called her and she didn't answer so the roommates went up to her door which was locked so thats why they called help from friends and that they together broke open Xana's door but couldn't open it very much even with 2 pushing the door because Ethan's body was lying behind the door but when they opened it enough they saw his body was bloody/dead they freaked out and ran outside, one called 911 but fainted and a passerby came to help and picked up the cell which was still with 911 operator and that's how a "unconscious person" was the 911 call -- the other roommate was hysterical and couldn't say anything to passerby... cops came and broke down upstairs Madison's room with both girls in there since Kaylee had already moved out and was just visiting for the night... looks like the killer shut the doors behind him and so they locked (or he knew how to lock them?)"

Obviously the perp is Jack Showalter. He was rejected by the victims and seemed to be stalking them. There is a video of one of the girls pointing at him and telling him "FU" in a bar. He is an avid hunter, vicious and efficient in his animal hunts and comfortable with bloody scenes. He had the knife to do it as evidenced by photos of the knife at one of his kills. He immediately "went to a cabin 5 hours away" after the murders (to dispose of evidence? to clean himself up?) and then left the country for Africa. How convenient for him that he could do that. There is your killer. Perhaps the police know all this and are keeping it on the down low so as not to alarm the murderer that he will be caught if he returns. I believe he should be extradited.

Everything about this case makes it difficult to solve, and I have a feeling the suspects knew this to begin with. I don’t think we’re dealing with your amateur disgruntled individual, this was very well carried out, which is the most terrifying part of all. So you're looking for a strong individual with the self control to stay mum after the fact. Male or woman that fits this description. I'd be incredibly surprised if it was a woman who did this. Why kill 3 if Kaylee was the target (the one with the most stab wounds)? Chronic hard drug use could be involved as they can cause homicidal psychosis which would complicate things but the crime was done with no evidence left behind, which suggests a clear minded individual knew to not leave evidence behind.
