    My dad grew up in BR as a missionary kid and just hearing him and imitating him helped me a lot. I didn't know how much until now.
    I correctly pronounced all but advogado, which I pronounced as "ah-vah-gah-dew". Sorry that this was in English, I don't have good vocabulary.

    Differentiating between the pronounciation of "avó" and "avô" or "céu" and "seu" is still a challenge for me, I understand the difference but still I have to concentrate more for it. "ão", "õe", "-em", "-om" were a bit difficult in the beginning, but now are easier.

  • @luiscoll2903

    Obrigado pelo vídeo!

    A hack I found useful having learned Spanish first is to practice words like sao and pao as if you were saying son but you forgot to pronounce the n. And in the case of sao in particular, knowing that san (and pan for pau) is the equivalent in Spanish helped me as a native English speaker to remember the nasal pronunciation.

    Hi Virginia. I always enjoy your videos. But we do have nasal sounds in British English (sort of). M, n, and words like "sing" can be nasalized. Plus when we have a cold! It's not hard for us to learn the "full" panoply of Portuguese nasal syllables, esp. as many learners will have learnt French.

    • @SpeakingBrazilian
      @SpeakingBrazilian  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Olá, William!
      You’re right! There are nasal consonants in English, like n, m, and the ng sound. What I said in the video is that there are no nasal vowels in the English language. In English, vowels can be slightly nasalized by the consonants m or n, but they are considered phonemically oral (produced through the mouth, not the nose). If you look at the phonetic alphabet used for English, you won’t find any nasal vowels. In Portuguese, on the other hand, there is a phonemic distinction between oral and nasal vowels. We have true nasal vowels that stand alone without the need for any nasal consonant.
      It’s basically a different paradigm. You can try to compare these sounds with English, of course, but phonetically speaking, nasal vowels do not exist in English.
      I know it’s frustrating. There are many vowel sounds in English that also don’t exist in Portuguese, such as the distinction between pan, pin, and pen. The same happens with nasal vowels from French, such as in vin and vent. For Brazilians, these vowels are very difficult to pronounce because we don’t have all of them in our phonetic spectrum.
      I’m fascinated by this topic, as you can tell by my long message, but it’s really hard to discuss pronunciation in writing. I hope this makes sense.
      Obrigada por ser um ótimo aluno!

    Os ortógrafos brasileiros não fizeram nenhum favor aos estrangeiros quando concordaram em suprimir a diárese ou o trema. Agora, você não tem certeza se deve pronunciar “qu” como “kw” ou apenas “k”. Uma solução é comprar um dicionário anterior à mudança ortográfica, como o “A Portuguese-English Dictionary” de James L. Taylor, que ainda usa o trema. Taylor também resolve outro pesadelo para os alunos, que é a pronúncia do “x”. Virginia deveria fazer uma sessão sobre esses dois tópicos. Talvez ela já o tenha feito.
