From what i know the rival for the vw sharan its not S-Max, its Galaxy...
my answer is the espace its big, beautiful, practical and looks good inside
My Opinion is 1) Ford S-Max 2) Renault Escape 3) Kia Sorento 4) Volkswagen Sharan
I think the Espace look's better, you can easily park in front of a restaurant, but with Sharan (too classic) you can leave your children at school, I think its more like a second car, the Espace is usable every day... IMO..
On looks alone, I would choose the Renault Espace. I am partial to French cars, so I might be biased. However the others all have their merits and I would no doubt have to drive them all before making a final decision. I do however think the Hyundai Sante Fe would get my vote over the Sorento.
Great review - very thorough. After all these years it is only the Renault that looks modern. Really nice design and believe it will look modern for some years to come.

Appreciate if anyone could share, how does the Grand Espace IV 2.0T stack against VW Sharan 2.0 TSI. I'm considering to get either of these two.
Unfortunately, Renault in my country did not bring in the latest Grand Espace.
If I had the money, I would go for the Espace, because it seems to me it is the car with the most soul and passion and with most the gadgets. But the Espace is no more that it used to be. It is still a nice vehicle but it used to be more. The Renault engineers lost the way. It should have had a different name and the Espace should have been what it have always been - a very versatile family car with all king of combinations for the seats and lots of space... It used to be a competitor for the Chrysler Voyager... now it is compared to a Kia Sorento... Still, very nice car and I love the detail for the top version with the ,,Paris Initiale" name, sounds so French :)) .

Thanks for the comparison. In my opinion, I would go for S-max or Sharan. I think Ford has made notable progress since new gen of Fusion, or Mondeo, better built quality and ergonomics. Also, it comes with powerful and more effective engines. Even if Sharan looks a bit boring, it has wonderful reliability and rather better build quality. Moreover, I really like the auto-parking assist on Sharan and S-MAX.

I already owned the s-Max & the Sharan. After watching the reviews I will choose the Sharan again. If you want to transport 7 persons with some confort that's the best option of the four. I really enjoyed my S-Max because it feels like a car, but I also love the confort, size & elegance of the Sharan...

VW Sharan and Seat Alhambra looks very old fashioned. The espace looks more new fresh style and has a lot features included vs Vw and Seat

I live in a country with lots of snow and ice and an all wheels drive vehicle is safer then the front wheel drive. Also you can park the vehicle in deep snow (very handy). The gaz consumption is almost the same as the front wheel drive. In country with a mild winter, there is no need to buy an all wheel drive.
If I had money I would choose choose the Kia Sorento, safer in winter, plus more warranty years and I really like the style of the car.
Overall... I think I would choose KIA... Sharan sounded very loud, especially the noise of the diesel was very noticeable. Regarding S-max... nice car but it looks not as good as the previous generation of this car.
To all, I would recommand any of them, except the Sharan...
Talking from an experience I had with a friend using a Sharan Taxi for 150 / 200Km, I can tell you that after 50Km or so, we were both starting moving & moving on our seats, feeling so bad (butt pain...), really unconfortable for long distance.
I remember thinking "never again".
That's true story (no troll).
As it was a foreign country, the driver well understood our complains.
For the return, he changed for a much more confortable car.
I hope last generation of Sharan has improved on that, but(t) as I still remember that bad journey, I would take any of the 3 other cars.

***** It is something you can't recognise during your review which I really appreciate. Testing for a few minutes, that's fine, but when you do long journey,, you feel really unconfortable at the back. Hopefully, we don't feel the same at the front.
KIK San I think I understand what you mean. Was it a pain in the lumbar region, the down part of the back?
+niksarass No, it was really bottock pain, that's why we were constently moving on our seat. I could think it was myself only, but my colleague complained as well. Maybe lighter children would'nt mind, but for adults, I would not recommand except for short trips.
Wow, I so expecting a German biased report. I was wrong. The guy obviously German but a professional in his work, gave a proper detail account of each car. Hell of alot better than any British car magazines ever do. I love his accent, his English is alot better than my German, so we'll done. With such detailing lasting more than a poxy 3 or 4 mins from the crappy what car reviews ,who often get it completely wrong when there silly surveys come out which you get a quick flippant remark if your lucky, they sure could learn a few things from guy here.

I like to also mention that I have watched many of your youtube videos. I don't normally add a comment, but just vote yes or no with the clip, but I've been buying many British car magazines since the early 1980s , all of which have completely changed, magazines got thinner and thinner, less and less interesting and the parts which use to be very interesting like concepts from all types of vehicles, companies ,ideas and best of all the latest news . I was interested in the surveys that are held once a year. But like everything in this country it all boils down to great and money. With each month be comming more and more biased towards anything German made. I'm not having ago at Germans at all, and what I think of German cars isn't important , but when the top magazines keep showing page after page after page of the latest German car news which just look the same year after year but change the front and back lights slightly, gets all the journalists in self indulgent orgasum. Like top gear programme it's gone completely mad, from being 100% very interesting which you learned every time and covered all topics from the cheapest cars from every make to new laws how the cars work and came about to now being just about the presenters and there own self importance. So thank you my fellow friends from across the channel for making car programmes real, interesting and most of all unbiased. P.s.i have a 2006 vw beetle convertible which I bought recently for £700 the max I can afford, which I love but atm waiting for a mechanic to fix the power steering lol
I think the sharan because of the practicality of the storage and the touch screen storage of the mpv the ford s system is slow and lagy the sharan is very nice to drive

As I'm in the quest of finding new MPV for the family, I was wondering if it wouldn't be more fair to include the new Ford Galaxy instead of the S-max on your comparison. I would go for Renault Espace or Ford S-Max. Kia and VW looks so boring.
Not sure that I understand your point about the bigger engine and the all wheel drive option. I think because all wheel drive vehicle is already more expensive to build, if a bigger engin come standard this will add up to the price tag. That could be a no go for the buyers.
Yes, but, the pre-2015 4motion Sharan was available only with the 140ps engine and only with the manual gearbox.
I am pretty sure some would have wanted the DSG&170ps with 4-motion
Espace would be nice family car if you can second row seats fold back. The seats you can use only in one upright position. For long travel - and this car I think is designed to such - very not comfortable. VW Sharan - seats 2 row can be folded back so much better but 3 seats are designed for children and are not comfortable. And Sharan have suprising so small amount of space in 2 row ! The best car is Kia Sorento - I tested all those cars. Sorento has very comfortable seats, 2 row folding back a lot, pleanty of space in 2 row. Interior is incomparable to the rest of cars from the test. I wish it is 15cm longer - would be the best car for a family on the market

I try with Renault Espace but since I try Ford Smax I stay with Ford Smax.
Why?
Espace use some 1lit per 100km then Smax.Also car parts are cheper at Smax.Same price is with Ford Smax 164hp and Espace 131hp.Espace do not have so much "punch" like Smax.I am 193cm high and it is better at Smax to drive then Espace.Espace is beatifull but smax is larger to seat down and behind seats middle seat at Smax is also bigger then at Espace.And Smax is fastest car then all 3 cars! Espace is biggest loser with price after years to come.Sharan and Smax keeps best price in years to come
I would choose Citroen C4 Grand Picasso in this category, but between these 4 cars, I would definitely choose S-Max.
The all wheel drive in the Sharan is great for towing a camping trailer
I own a S-max ST-Line 5 seater. I have 2 kids. I just cannot understand the reason of having a 7 seater family car unless you own a small soccer team, you use it as shuttle bus or you are that good fellow who drives the whole street to school in your car. The luggage won't fit anymore with 7 people on board in a car this small!! I cannot imagine a situation in which someone actually needs a 7 seater family car this size. Or, if they do (or if I had a 3rd child), I think a VW Transporter/Ford Transit or Mercedes V-Classe are definitely the answer. It is the only way you can put together the whole family and all the luggage with extra options. Having said that, I think an MPV is good to have in my situation but it has to be the most dynamic one: the S-max! (I don't exactly understand what did he mean by "this car actually feels bigger/heavier..." - but the Sharan or Sorento aren't?! - trust me, it feels lighter and all the other reviews confirm that) . Otherwise nice test.

I would say comparable with Touran, less space than in Sharan for sure; third row for kids only
I've travel in all of these 4 cars, but only driven 2.
- For the test to be fair and feasible, both Sharan and Sorento does not fit on this test, you must have picked Touran and Careens instead.
- Sharan is a ugly box with wheels more suitable for elderly transport, very high, to much past century looking and not appealing for a young family.
- Espace may looks nice, but after 5 minutes you realize that it's only a bunch of brilliant plastics whilst being a big car, is at the end very tight and small even for 5 adults.
- Sorento looks a good and solid SUV but very bad on interior, poor and ugly. The second row of seats is a stupid combination of seats were only 4 adults and a kid can be seated.
- S-MAX is definitely the most good looking MPV, the only one where 5 adults and 2 kids can travel with comfortable and fun, better with panoramic roof.
Oh... the two cars I've already driven was the S-MAX and the Sharan, while as a passenger, the Sorento and the Espace are really very strange... Bad may be the right word.
pretty much agree with you in all, especially the Espace, yes it is bunch of plastic and electro loaded toys sort of, i have seen them couple of times in-person, as i often go to my nearst Renault car garage.
Kia Sedona, Honda Odyssey, Toyota sienna are the royal family of mini vans 😂 I just wish Mazda still made the Mazda MPV

Love the leather stitching and minimal chrome. Makes the interior "pop". Wish more American makes would add extendable thigh support.
Wood looks very elegant in the Sharan, but those horrible tray is in the second row. VW should move them to the door or just put in some pockets instead. You'd think that VW would choose to have a base model (S) with front wheel drive, small engine and manual to have a low price leader for small business owners and families with one child. Everything beyond that (SE, SEL) with all-wheel-drive, DSG and the larger 2.0l diesel or 2.0l TSI.
S--Max is getting a bit old. While I like the interior, MyFordSync is very old...to be replaced by Sync3 in the fall 2016 models (not sure when Germany will get it). The seats are borrowed from the Ford Fusion and I do not really like them. Took a trip in one for 14 hours and the seats quickly become uncomfortable. Not sure if it is the fabric or the cushion (padding) itself. Is the S-max available with an automatic as well? If so, is it the DCT?
I have yet to drive the new Sorento. But, you can see the dramatic styling changes since the stole one of the AUDI designers a few years ago. Kia is looking very Germanic now.

1 - Espace is a good family car and put some style in that sunday family time.
2 - Sharan is a family car with hight quality, that it.
3 - S-Max is less stilish than Espace and more appeling from outside that the sharan
4 - Sorento is just....... maybe...... i dont now, just dont like at all.
Final - S-Max is in may opinion the better commitment bettwen the all.

Depends a lot of the market that you are in, in east Europe sells German brands, in West Europe it sells lots of France and Japan cars.

trunk space is huge. largest of them all.
I skip Kia this is different kind 5 seats only; Espace is step back in comparison to earlier version you can't use 6 and 7 seat; smax gives chance for small adults and children, agree that better compare with galaxy smax rather with Touran; I compared plenty of such cars and Sharan is the best choice because of sliding doors. 90 degrees opening in smax is ok but you have to have open space for that; sliding door gives ability to sit in on dense parking. I drove two sharans in a row - 170 and 188 hp now switching to ford Galaxy because VW killed this model; I miss C8, 807 and Ulysse these were even better than Sharan

those electric sliding doors and trunk are pretty dangerous with kids. imagine when kids arm or leg goes between sliding door and door frame, i dont think those doors have stop system for that kind of situations.. ouch
The sliding doors do have a safety feature, All cars with electric sliding doors do. Even the ten year olds ones do so don't worry about that!

Renault Espace no doubt have splendid interior also Dci engines are great. Sharan it's very good also with good quality construction (I drove a Seat Alhambra which is identically with Sharan) but design.. and others ford and kia no worth it , weak quality

Already decided. I have bought Renault Espace. VW,FORD and KIA are not in ESPACE segment. Renault has Scenic in this segment. This would be the fair comparison. This cars are not mach for the Espace. Espace is a Volvo XC90 concurrent. But Volvo is araond 100000 euros.
Give me some information about Espace. I want to buy the previous generation 2015-2018 a used one. Any problems? Are you satisfied?
