I've come to the conclusion that they approach auditors because they know they can skive off work by doing so. They know it'll use up fifteen minutes or half an hour of their shift. That means they don't have to do any real police work in that time because real police work is beyond their ability.
Its probably a treat for them to engage with an auditor. It spares them some time from hiding up the same street, or layby ,killing time til the next doughnut feeding frenzy..
