Maybe it is just me, but unless humans rule the galaxy it seems unlikely that the Metric system would be the galactic standard, I think most species would have mathematics based on their number of fingers on their hands. And as such their measurement systems might be based on physical standards like the Metric system but would have different units due to say being base 8 instead of 10.
I always just take it as an artifact of universal translators. In my head cannon they take base 6 or 8 and translate it into human terms unless an ageed upon Galactic Standard Unit is spoken by the narrator.
