Hey everyone, just wanna say thanks for watching! We’ve been getting some help find new digits from a fellow creator on TH-cam who goes by “Detecting Dakota” and I would consider it a personal favor if you’d go over to his channel, and sub and tell him Below the Plains sent you. Thanks everyone, heres a link www.youtube.com/@samsager1?app=desktop
What fascinates me is that whoever threw those things away never had a thought that in 2023 someone would be digging it up. I wonder if in 150 years someone will be digging through our landfills 😮 .
haha glad you stayed to the end! we get that a comment a lot that always says "you should show the cleaned up pieces": and i always say, we put the best stuff at the very end! glad we could bring back some memories for you, hope they were good ones! and thank you for watching and commenting
Hello Tom and jake another full pit it's nice to see english China ware and ale bottles so many ink bottles 🍼 have a good weekend both Andrew south wales uk 👍 👌 😀 🇬🇧
I'm from Australia but congratulations on the amount of effort you put into these. Those seeds you find interest me. From a horticultural perspective there is a fair bit of interest in old plant varieties. From a historical perspective, it is interesting to know the type of things they were eating. I would be taking some of those seeds and giving them to a local horticultural or history society to have a look at. The china and glass wear offer a lot of information on the history of industry and movement of goods at that time. This must be exhausting work but it is appreciated.
@@stormy8207 Imagine soaking them, planting them, and something grows. To think you'd be looking at a plant over 123 years old, and that it had been pooped out by someone. Very cool.
I seriously wish you two would come to the northeast, and dig outhouse/privy holes, here! You guys know what you’re doing! Age is much older here! Keep up the great work! Love these videos!
oh i would absolutely love to do that at some point. we are actually working some stuff out with a few places across the country. we've gone to some place where we got shot down every door we knocked on so generally its just a little easier to dig out here because almost everyone says yes. but we do have some stuff in the works. probably wont be til later in the year if not next year, but yeah, the goal of ours is to expand outwards from the midwest. and obviously theres no better place to dig than the northeast. hopefully we will have something for you at some point. im thinking it will probably work out, just might be a ways down the road! thanks for watching and commenting
If you make it out to Michigan, you should try Ypsilanti, MI. Town dates to the 1850's and there's are tons of house dating back to the 1870s still standing. Lots of old maps showing the old houses too. I think most of the folks in my community would be happy to let you dig in their yard. I'd be happy to let you dog in mine, my house dates to 1873.
that pit was jammed packed with so much stuff, too bad that probably caused a lot of it to break. really cool to see what the pits are like even when you aren't pulling out whole pieces
I have to say that I am so glad that you are never disappointed with the things you find, you are always happy to just see something. I watched another channel and they were like no big deal. Thank you for all the work guys put into your videos ❤
A lot of homes here in Florida older than the 1960s have these rubbish pits, excavators find them all the time when digging pools or septic systems, great find here man!!
@@BelowthePlains I live in Vermont and my house was built in 1880. It’s a fixer upper but I like it! I’m really happy I found your channel! I think you both are awesome and make a great team! I’d let you guys dig in my yard if you ever come to Vermont! 😊

yeah i know! it has a small chip on the bottom, but it was still pretty cool. when i posted it to my patreon, one of my patrons sent me a link, and it was a specific type of perfume. had a custom glass stopper but we never did find it. thanks for watching
haha well maybe one day soon we will make a video about how we locate these things. glad you like the channel! and thank you for watching and commenting
What a great dig! So many ornate pieces. Too bad there were not more complete pieces on the fancy housewares. ( candy dishes, lamps, etc.) Thanks for sharing, I’m headed over to see what Dakota has going on. I love seeing new areas. 😊
This is my favorite pit out of all the ones I've seen you excavate, due to it having my favorite things in it - fun housewares and figurines. Honestly, I've gotten tired of seeing you pull out millions of bottles. :) Oh but I do like the cold cream jars, and other skin emolliant bottles like the almond and honey bottle.
True and ppl also simply tossed them when they saw the contents inside fermented, with bacteria, ruined etc rather than clean them out. Not always but it was done rather than deal with the smells and mess.
First time viewer. I use to dig up old bottles and other interesting things back in the late sixties and seventies. Still have a few early beer cans and a porcelain dolls head which is quite unique. You definitely know your stuff!
Yeah love watching your vlogs what do you guys do with the Findings Sell them to museums show them at antique shows I'm sure they have to be worth something especially the rare ones but that's still pretty awesome how you can find history buried in the ground from 200 years ago Keep on making them and I'll keep on watching them Bezzy
haha thank you! well we do a variety of things with the bottles. we obviously keep some of them, usually the ones with the local embossing on them. or anything interesting. we dont really have to sell them anymore because the channel is doing pretty well. but we are thinking of starting a store at some point and selling the duplicates or some of the more common stuff. i would say the majority of the stuff ends up going to the homeowner. we basically give them whatever they want, split the good stuff, and then give them all of the lower value stuff. sometimes we re-bury the bulk of it. if its too new or there isnt anyone around who wants it, then we just place it at the bottom of the hole, and cover it with dirt, and then we fill the hole back in. we donate to local historic societies and even sometimes museums, but it has to be something pretty special for a museum to take it, which does happen from time to time. hope that answered your question. really glad you are liking the channel, and thanks for watching and commenting
How do you guys find the places where you dig? I haven’t been on here very long and I love watching what you get. But, I love that you immediately follow up with the info for the pieces you find.

I'd love to find about a dozen of various ink bottles to put in my camper as spice containers. That Lonergans glass oiler would definitely be a keeper for the guys running old equipment. The glass is typically the first thing broken.
Really appreciate all your research. Makes it so much more interesting. Great dig! Is the amount of broken glass and crockery normal, do you think? Perhaps a house with many children?
Tom, I bet you wish you could keep going under the garage. A lot of dish ware, not so much alcohol bottles. Loved the Cherie glass bottle, do you think it was perfume? Excellent dig. Will will visit Detecting Dakota. Take care.😀👏👍
I know you’re there for the glass, but as a potter… I’m so sad to see the pots get pushed aside and not shown the same kind of love. There is a beautiful brown glazed bowl, 25:09 I would loved to have seen. There was obviously so much down there you couldn’t show it all but it was so pretty. Do you put the pot shards back in the hole when you backfill? Someone in the future may want to dig those again someday. Thanks for all the digs!

I'm always surprised that you don't find more bottle stoppers (glass). What do you think happened to them? That perfume bottle is just lovely and probably had an ornate top also.
Wondering if you guys ever try to reconstruct any of the broken stuff? Obviously would be rare to have all or most the pieces. Maybe with an odd 1 off piece or something.
yeah thats basically what we do. if we find pieces of something ornate we will start collecting the pieces as we dig and if we get enough of them we will sometimes put it in the video. we also post pictures of the pottery to our facebook page sometimes. if you wanna follow us theres a link in the description. we usually post it on Tom's personal page, so that'd be the one to follow. thanks for watching
