    My favorite P&P adaptation is & always will be the '95 version w/ Colin Firth. It's just superior to all the others & no one will ever convince me otherwise. The pacing, the script, the beautiful score (Catherine DeBurg's theme is my favorite), & as you said the way the characters are portrayed is so spot on. And better than other adaptions I've seen. Every character gets there moment in the spotlight; where as with other adaptions I've found only the main bunch do & the others are just there.
    And something I feel the other adaptions didn't get a handle on is the humor. Every smirk, eye roll, & sarcastic comment etc. constantly leaves me in stitches. Especially when it comes to Mr. Bennet, he's just amazing!
    I fall more in love with it each time I watch it. I've literally watched it 3 to 4x in one wk. Just talking about it makes me want to watch it. It's actually currently in my DVD player; I wish I was kidding. Honestly I can go on & on about how much I ADORE this mini series but I'll stop while I'm ahead.
    My least fav is the '05 version; -audible gasps around the world; I know I know how dare I?! -steps onto soap box;
    The only thing I liked about this film was how it was shot. Except some of the moments between Darcy & Lizzie were way too romance novel-y, if you get my meaning. Don't even get me started on Darcy walking out of the fog on the moor. -cringe;
    The pacing was not very well done; it felt very choppy & awkward to me. They also tended to focus on the main plots instead of the intricate character relationships & sup-plots that Austen is prided for -wink;.
    I felt as if you never got a good sense of the characters, especially Wickham, Lydia, Mr. Bennet, etc. It was almost as if the only characters that mattered were Lizzie & Darcy & no one else.
    For me one of the main things that makes or breaks a movie is the script & it definitely fell flat. A lot of it was cheesy & again to romance novel-y. I mean how can anything compare to 'In vain I have struggled...you must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire & love you'?! Nothing I tell you; NOTHING!
    Again I could go on & on but I think I've made my point -steps off soap box;
    random thought/question: have you watched The Lizzie Bennet Diaries on TH-cam?! Cause you should if you haven't. Was very surprised when that adaption wasn't mentioned.
    I hope my thoughts are coherent & make some sense :). Can't wait for the next video in this series!

      ***** Hahaha, I love how he walks through the fog!! What's wrong with you??? :P
      I love how passionate everyone is when it comes to favourite versions :) I do agree that the characters aren't as fully developed in the film, which is why the 95 tv series is such a fantastic adaptation of the book xx

    Hi Lauren! thanks for the video ; I enjoyed it immensely. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite novels; we don't have enough time for me to tell you how much I love it. I saw all the movies which you referenced. I'm not a big fan of the 2005 adaptation for many reasons but mostly because I don't think Elizabeth is subtle enough; in almost every scene I wish I had a control knob to just turn down her reactions. I feel that 2005 Lizzy is more rude than strong. That adaptation does have some gorgeous natural settings (ahem) and a steaming hot Mr. Darcy.
    The 1995 version is my favorite. I agree that its characterizations are spot on; maybe the mom's hysterics are exacerbated. Jennifer Ehle acted just as I imagined Elizabeth would behave and Colin Firth is quintessential Darcy. I love that most of the settings (with the appropriate exception of London) have a very polished appearance. Longbourne might not have Netherfield Park's budget, but it's still clean and bright with rustic beauty.
    Aww you've made my afternoon with your video and put me in the mood to watch a few scenes of Pride and Prejudice again. I hope I didn't go on for too long; my self control ran away from me.

    1995 version is actually shot in Hertfordshire. 2005 version wasn't. The mannerisms of the 2005 version and the over the top scenery arn't true to how this area of the world looks ( I actually live in Hertfordshire) or how Victorian society really acted. The Victorians were a lot more reserved than the 2005 film. Plus, the Bennet family were still in money, though struggling so the whole farmhouse thing is wrong as well

      sparqytheninja ! Pride and Prejudice doesn’t take place in the Victorian era, but in the era right before, aka the Regency era. And, funny enough, the 2005 film didn’t even use costumes from the Regency era, but from the era right before, aka the Georgian era.

    I really love this video series of yours! Such a great idea! And oh man... the 1995 Colin Firth version. It's probably my favorite thing I've ever watched. I've watched it over and over throughout the years. I think everything about it is fantastic! I first watched it with my mom when I was young and I'm impressed that it captured the attention of a pre-teen. I wasn't a big fan of the 2005 version. Because the BBC version was a mini series you get so much more time with the story and the characters. I think that set up the 2005 version to be not as well liked by me because it had to condense the story. Looking forward to the next book you do movie reviews for!

    2005 version is basically (as wiser critics than me have accurately described and i agree) a bronte version of austen's story. as charlotte bronte herself wrote, the styles and worlds are too different, and converting one to another is not a good thing. not as if we are short of bronte novels or their imitators to cater to people who love those adaptations. no need to butcher austen.

    What a great video! I remember looking forward to the 2005 version having already loved the 1995 version, and it's certainly the more beautiful of the two--stunning visuals, music you can listen to all day, and some excellent choices about the characters. Lizzie's reaction to Charlotte's engagement really sticks out to me, as well as all the tall men with their billowing coats. What I miss most from the 1995 version is Elizabeth's poise? I don't just mean Kiera Knightly's acting, but especially the dialogue. A woman who says, "I do not play this instrument, so well as I should like, but I have always assumed that to be my own fault because I would not take the trouble of practicing," is a very different woman from one who says, "maybe you should take your aunt's advice and practice!" before storming out of the room. I miss the poise and the intelligence of Austen's Elizabeth, and I miss some of the historical accuracy (Bingley in Jane's bedroom? Pigs in the garden? Marble busts? Really?) Thanks for reviewing them all! I really need to get my hands on Bride and Prejudice!

      +Clara K. Biesel Missing Lizzie's poise is exactly why the 2005 movie was such a disappointment to me. Not to say it isn't a good movie, but I personally don't like it because she doesn't feel like Lizzie to me. She almost feels more like a clever Lydia. :/

  • @rokinjaguar

    Honestly, I quite dislike the 2005 movie, but I think it's because I'm looking for faithful adaptations of the characters. Keira Knightley's Lizzie was just too bouncy and giggly for me. I see Lizzie as a more "tongue-in-cheek" kind of character. She's quiet until she has something to say, and she says it more mischievously than Keira's hot-headed Lizzie. Also, I felt the kiss between Lizzie and Darcy in the 2005 movie was unnecessary and detracts from the experience. It felt like they put that in there just because they wanted more sexy on the screen, and that didn't sit well with me.
    Hearing your thoughts, however, made me think I'm probably just being too critical of the 2005 version, since I watched the 1995 version and then read the book when I was young and thought they were both so enchanting. I think the 2005 version just wasn't what I was looking for in a Pride and Prejudice adaptation.
    Kudos for giving me a new perspective, though! I love this series! :)

  • @penrynsdreams
    @penrynsdreams 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I grew up watching the 1995 version with my mom, then read the book in high school 2 or 3 years before the 2005 version came out and... I've literally never been able to sit through it (much to the frustration of a couple of friends, haha). I know it's not fair at all, and I am happy to talk about how beautifully it is shot and how wonderful the score is, but I guess I imprinted on the 1995 version and 2005 just doesn't cut it for me. I don't judge people who love it, though! I see why people love it, I just haven't been able to. It's funny, P&P isn't even my favorite Austen - why do I have such strong feelings about the adaptations? I hope that someday I'll be able to untangle myself and enjoy the 2005 version for what it is.
    I'm totally with you on the other films though. I was pleasantly surprised by the 1940 version and the Bollywood version. Both very, very fun!

      @LaurenWade  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jessica L. If you saw the 1995 one first then I can completely see how you'd be disappointed in the 2005 film :) I think I love it saw much because I first saw it out of context and didn't have any preconceptions.

      @penrynsdreams 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reads and Daydreams Yeah! I think it's interesting how our first experiences with a piece of media can so strongly influence how we see it ever after, like how many people's favorite Doctor is also their first Doctor. I also think that my emotional connection, having memories of watching it with my mom, plays a big part in how I feel about the various adaptations!

  • @sara_thisgirl
    @sara_thisgirl 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I read the book before I saw any of the adaptations and I think that's a really big reason why I LOVE the 1995 version, because it's so true to the book, I feel like that's mainly what I look for in any book to film adaptation. However, I saw the 2005 movie before I ever saw the 1995 version and thus it always will hold a special place. It was beautifully shot just like you said and the music was gorgeous, and honestly I really love Keira Knightly because of Pirates of the Caribbean. I didn't know about all these adaptations however and will definitely have to look up the bollywood version. Did you go see Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? I would love to hear what you thought about it!

  • @AnnieThyme
    @AnnieThyme 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The 95 version I just can't compare to anything else. For me it stands alone and everything else is separate from it :) bride & p. was such a great surprise that I have rewatched many times since. I had high hopes because of gurinder chadha but was still leary before watching.
    I think the original tv adaption of p&p is one of my least favourite austen teleplays from that era but I really love ther persuasion one. But I think the slow, still pace really fits that book as to me that book is about stillness in a way it has such a different energy than the others which often feel overflowing with youthful exuberance. Persuasion is my favourite austen novel (as of right now, although I was not a fan on first reading). I love the book to screens and have really been enjoying your channel. I hope you are having a good week! :)

    My favourite by far is the 1995 version, that piano stare gets me every time! Me and my mum and my sister have watched it so many times we can practically recite it. I actually can't stand the 2005 version but I think that's because I was sick on the day we went to go see it in the cinema and I'm not a big fan of Keira Knightley, I also thought the representation of the house the Bennets lived it was way off, in that version it looked like they lived on some sort of farmhouse which is completely inaccurate. The main theme tune from the 2005 version is lovely though. The Bollywood version is so much fun, the songs (especially No Life Without Wife) are great! I really like this series, looking forward to the next one!

    I saw the 2005 version and I thought it was boring because I didn't really understand it, but now I think the movie was just gorgeous! They got the period absolutely right, with everyone looking noticeably not as well fed, and also quite grimy. They also made Kiera a Lizzy look really unkempt after her walk to Netherfield.

    I remeber watching the '03 version that you did not find, and it was quite ok. It is a LDS adaptation, so it goes with the subtitle "a latter-day comedy" - so that's the twist on the setting. "Lost in Austen" miniseries is slightly fun, but different, take as well.

    I actually saw bride & prejudice before reading the book so, while I did enjoy it, I don't think I fully appreciated the characters and how it adapted the story into a completely different culture and time. I'd have to rewatch it.
    I don't think anything can beat the 95 bbc version though. I actually saw it AFTER the keira knightley movie but just the attention to detail and how faithfully each and every actor brought their characters completely to life is EXACTLY what I want from a screen adaptation of any beloved book. It was just absolutely perfect.
    The 2005 version was not bad either but the main thing that bothered me about it was that I felt keira's Lizzy was almost unrecognizable as THE Elizabeth Bennet that I love so much. A bit too giggly and the way she delivered the dialogue lacked the sparkling cutting wit of the book especially when Darcy and Lizzy are supposed to be having their wonderful back-and-forth. In fact, I felt that the entire movie struggled with capturing the right tone of Jane Austen's humor. Interestingly, I felt the complete opposite way with the Kate Winslet/Emma Thompson adaptation of Sense and Sensibility! Now THAT was a perfect Austen movie adaptation!

    I love so much the 2005 adaptation. It's just such a wonderful piece of art, the landscapes, the daydreaming atmosphere most of characters seem to have. The director I think he's just so talented. I mean, the angles that he uses, the weather as a form of expression of the scene they are recording. So when Lizzie feels happy, joyful, and dreamy; the scene follows her as well being everything calm, sunny and comfortable. Or when Darcy wants to propose her, everything it's so rainy, and so muddy.
    Also the director filmed the last Anna Karenina adaptation and as well as this Pride and prejudice has such a value refering to art.
    Awesome video, by the way! I enjoyed a lot. :)

    I am so glad someone else out there has seen and loved the 1940s 'adaptation' of Pride and Prejudice. As much as I love Lawrence Olivier's Darcy, the true highlight of that film is the carriage race scene between Mrs. Bennet and Mrs. Lucas is unrivalled and amazing. Love this video, definitely going to check out the rest of this series. :)

    Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle will always be Darcy and Elizabeth for me. I cannot count how many times I have seen that adaptation and to me, they are true likenesses to the characters in the book. Although saying that, I have watched Bride and Prejudice and loved it. Although the Keira Knightly version, watched it once and I'm sorry to say...hated it! Could not picture her as Elizabeth one little bit, maybe because like others I'm not a fan. She's such a wooden actress, I'm my opinion!

The 2005 version was also the first version I have ever seen and I am very biased towards it as well :)

    This is the first of your book to screen series I've watched and it's so good!
    I love Pride and Prejudice and of all the adaptations I've seen, the 1995 BBC series is by far my favourite. They capture the characters so well whilst still making them likeable.
    I'm very keen to watch Bride and Prejudice. I assumed it would be very slapstick but you've definitely sold it.
    I liked the 2005 version and it was my favourite until I discovered the alternative US ending. I don't think it was needed and it just ruined it a little for me, which is a shame because it is a good film (although Collin Firth will always be Darcy for me)

    It's really interesting to hear what your views are on the different adaptations! Personally I have only watched the 1995 and the 2005, both of which I watched after reading the book.
    I absolutely loved the 1995 version and I totally agree with the stuff you said about it. To me it was like I was watching the characters I had come to know and love before my eyes, all true to the book without becoming long-winded and dull.
    It's interesting that so many people love the 2005 version more, though. I think I can see why it is good as a separate piece of art but when I watched it I was fresh out of reading the book and I just found that it crammed too much into a short amount of time, missed out some of my favourite bits and was generally quite different to what I hoped to see from an adaptation. Plus, I am really picky about historical accuracy and I could tell that they were trying to modernise it, which is great, but they kept it in the time period it was written in. To me, this just left it a bit historically confused and I found that this made me a bit uncomfortable.
    I think I might re-watch it now, though, because if so many people enjoyed it then there must have been something I was missing while I was hating it :P I'm sure I can find a way to appreciate it as a movie in itself. Perhaps I was being pretty cynical when I watched it, seeing as I had read it so recently and had certain expectations which weren't necessarily met. So I might change my mind...

    • @LaurenWade
      @LaurenWade  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      WriterTheReader I think it's all about your expectations going in - I didn't know the story of P&P that well before watching the 2005 film, but after reading the book I did realise that it had taken a more condensed approach. Still - since I saw it out of context I guess I can appreciate more for its own sake, but can completely see how if you'd saw it with the 1995 production in your mind you would have found it lacking x

    I was introduced to Pride and Prejudice through the 1995 BBC miniseries, and I _love_ it. The entire cast is brilliant, and Firth is forever my Mr Darcy. Seeing Firth in other roles amplifies how magnificently he portrayed Darcy. He's such a brilliant actor.
    I had heard that the period in the Olivier adaptation was a bit off, but you've made me interested in seeing the different way the story was interpreted. I still need to see Bride and Prejudice. It was also something I never sought out, but I've heard great things about it.
    I know a lot of people like the 2005 film, but I've never been keen on it. Probably because I was comparing it to the 1995 miniseries. Of course, it did introduce a lot of people to the story, so it's definitely a good, impacting film in that sense.
    One adaptation I really love is The Lizzie Bennet Diaries web series. I think that, as a modern adaptation, it was so clever in interpreting the story and the characters. I'm always quick to recommend it to fellow P&P lovers!

    Very interesting. I never really cared for Pride & Prejudice, though I have loved all the adaptations I have seen of Emma, Mansfield Park, Persuasion and Sense & Sensibility. I have only yet read Persuasion, so I have no place to really discuss P & P, but I just never got the hype. Darcy just never did it for me. I will say though, that I came away with a new appreciation and understanding of the characters after reading and watching Death Comes to Pemberley. But I am still, totally, a Mr. Knightley kind of girl. Excited to see which book you do next, loving this video series!

      I really really wish I was more like that, but unfortunately I have a thing for Picking on eachother and guys changing for me. Which is why Darcy and Knightley are my favorites. (I actually like the story of persuasion more then Emma but Knightly is definately better then the Capt W.)

    I have a pretty serious devotion to the 1995 version - I can pretty accurately recite the first couple of episodes and whenever a character blows out a candle (which happens suprisingly often) I can do it with them - perfectly synchronised...
    I do think that the cinematography of the 2005 film is stunning however, and I can appreciate that they needed to tell a story that worked in 2 hours so some of the nuances in the Lizzy/Darcy relationship are missing. What I don't like thought is that it feels like they made it like Lizzy had always fancied him and was just not admitting it to herself, whereas in the book I think her dislike of him is genuine. I think that this makes her character progression is a lot more limited than Darcy's and the film becomes about Darcy getting over his pride and reserve and not about Lizzy giving herself a bit of kick up the backside too!
    You should definitely check out The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, as an AMAZING modern adaptation of the novel. I'm a total purist and usually hate it when adaptation 'get things wrong' (aka doesn't do exactly what I want) and I thought this was spectacular and deals with a lot of the issues with modernising a story with such strict societal roles for women really well. I also think youtube/vlogs is a really interesting medium for telling a classic story - one I hadn't encountered/thought much about before.
    Thanks for a great video :)

      Lilith Bea Yeah, I think film adaptations of books are always going to either miss something out or feel rushed, so the 2005 one was never going to be as thorough. I watch it now almost as a stand alone film, not in comparison to the book or tv series :)

    I love these videos, a really fun idea. My favourite will always have to be the Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle adaptation as I adore it's accuracy and beauty.
    The 2005 film is just far too modern for me to enjoy. It's very beautiful but the actors move in too clunky a manner for me to believe a historical context and the interpretation of Bingley makes me want to cry. It's pretty but when I want to watch Pride and Prejudice then it's Austen's narrative and characters I'm looking for.

    • @LaurenWade
      @LaurenWade  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, I love the 2005 Bingley! I think he and Rosamund Pike are so adorable. Like I say though, it's probably just because I saw it first because, you're right, they do take some liberties with historical accuracy in terms of how the characters interact with each other x

    • @NonFicBooks
      @NonFicBooks 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reads and Daydreams With Bingley I just thought he was played too daft rather than gentle. It was hard to see why Darcy would be friends with him. But then it's often the case that softer male characters are often played as bumbling, too many Watsons are done like that as well.

    Fun facts: the 1940 version is actually based on the Helen Jerome play based on P&P. And the movie was originally supposed to be in color, but is in black & white because Gone With the Wind had bought up all the color film.
    I love Bride and Prejudice! I wish it got more recognition/just talked about more. My favorite is undoubtedly the 1995 version though. The 2005 version is beautiful and I always live Dario Marianelli's scores, but it's not accurate at all. They tried to put modern touches in, but also keep it in period and it doesn't work.

    I was waiting all the way through this video to see what you thought of the 2005 version - I know a lot of people don't like it but like you I personally love it :) I think it's not as true to the book and goes a bit too fast, but I think it's just such a beautiful film; Mr and Mrs Bennet are very nicely done and Matthew MacFadyen gets across the social awkwardness of Darcy as well as the pride... I think maybe my ideal adaptation would be the music, actors and look of the 2005 version with the 1995 script.
    I also really want to see Bride and Prejudice now.

    I don't really mind that the film isn't that faithful to the book, I actually think that the 1995 series is too similar to the book, some lines are directs quotes from the book, which bothers me a bit to be honest. But I still prefer the series over the film, just because the characters in the series are so spot on, they are just the way I pictured them

First of all, it's seems like you're having a really good time doing this and that makes me happy, because then we might expect to see more of them, right? :D Second, you totally made me want to watch all of the versions I haven't yet seen (most especially the 1940s one and Bride & Prejudice, but maybe even the mini-series). Third, I think my favorite has to be the 1995 one, because I just love how all the characters are portrayed in it! But since I believe I've only seen the 2005 version once, I should probably rewatch it and reserve my final judgement :) And fourth and finally, you did such a great job with analysing the movies! You pointed out really interesting things about the different versions, for example about Lydias character, and that made me reeeally excited to watch them (like, right now).

    I think you expressed all my thoughts on the different adaptations perfectly! I haven't seen the 80's miniseries, but I have watched the rest of them. I watched the 40's film with my mom and I remember just laughing through the entire film. It was obvious that they didn't think about the time period, their straw hats they wore I remember being significantly funny. But it was still a very enjoyable read. I also love all your points about the Bollywood version on how where a character is from, whether America, England or India reflects so well on their social class. I adore that movie and watch it all the time, the music is just so catchy. I think you have a bias towards the 2005 film, but I have that same bias. It was the film that introduced me to the book, author and plot that has been my favorite since that moment. I adore Keira Knightley and can watch this all the time. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet's portrayals make me laugh so much and the cinematography of the film is amazing. What annoys me about the discussion of which adaptation is better between the 1995 and 2005 versions is that people focus on which includes a more accurate adaptation compared to the book, and obviously when you are looking at a six episode miniseries, it is more accurate. I think it's unfair to compare the two in that way because one is a series and one is a movie, which obviously cannot include the entire story. Great comments and insight into each of the films!

I have carefully avoided most classic adaptations from the 80s except for the Forester ones because i saw all the more modern ones first so i know that i won't like them as much and probably find them dated :( I completely agree with you about the 1940 one :) I LOVED Naveen Andrews' Bingley character in Bride and Prejudice! Probably my favorite interpretation of him (though i don't remember the 90s one much). The 2005 one is also my favorite because i saw it before i'd read the whole book and it was gorgeous! On the whole i probably like the performances better in the 2005 one as well except that Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth were wonderful ( i agree that the 95 potrayals of Lydia and Mrs Bennet were closer to the book but i think that was why i found them so annoying lol). My favorite Darcy though has to be Matthee Macfadyen and also i know the Lost in Austen Darcy was totally wrong but i loved Eliot Cowan's portrayal of him :) Have you seen Lost in Austen? My unnecessary response, but comparison vids are so fun: I love the 1980 version, it's my favorite. I feel as though that's the best Elizabeth and the best editing of the book. HOWEVER, I grew up with that version. If I saw it for the first time today, I might think it was too slow and dry. I don't have a crush on Colin Firth's Darcy, but I think he fits the book's version of the character the best (if a bit softened). My mom's favorite Darcy is in Lost in Austen lol.

    Bride&Prejudice was the 1st adaptation of P&P that I watched, and I loved it. To be completely honest, I've watched it a long before 1995 or even 2005 version, before I even considered reading a book myself (I wasn't a big reader back then) and for a long time I preffered this version. I was even a little shocked when I've watched 1995 version, because it was so similar to B&P and I didn't know P&P was a thing.... Okay, a confession. I, apparently, wasn't well educated back then, but P&P wasn't that popular in my circles and I don't live in English-speaking country, so it wasn't a required reading in school, if I remember correctly.
    So I first read the book in Uni. Really liked it and watching 2005 adaptation after reading a book was just... No. NO! I didn't like it at all. Yes, camera work is brilliant and I was constantly thinking "gush, I want to be there, in that shot", but as adaptation itself, it didn't work for me. And now, having watched Mansfield Park version I can draw parallels there, because all those clothing choices and pigs in 2005 version was for me just like that idiotic racist-rapist reimagining of Mansfield Park. I was constantly thinking they weren't like that it the book! They didn't do that! They didn't wear that! Pigs?
    And then, I've watched 1995 version. And oh my gawwwwww. I fell in love. It definitely is one of my favorite adaptations of the book and one of my fav mini-series. Pure perfection. Yes, it's not that beautifully filmed, but come on, it's a 1995 mini-series... And even with that quality, it feels more realistic and cozy to me, than the newer version.
    However, when a little bit of time passed, I rewatched the 2005 version and it grew on me. Still prefer the 1995 version, but I sure am not hating the newer movie. It's good in a way:)

    I have watched
    1980 version which I found Darcy and Elizabeth had very little chemistry together and the costume especially Darcys was just too ott for me
    2005 version was very good for the length of it. I enjoyed certain bits of this very much. Odd inflections...the focus on Mathew Macfadyens hand after he helps lizzy into the carriage....the way he wants to kiss her in the middle of their argument in the rain on his first proposal...the friendship between Darcy and Bingley especially when Bingley uses Darcy to practice his proposal to Jane.
    Hated the American version with the kiss at the end...not very Regency period or very necessary for a period drama. The music in this adaptation was beautiful. Also Colonel Fitzwilliam in this adaptation was much older than the picture I have of him in my head
    The 1995 version is my go to version for the real interpretation of the book that is in my head. Darcy is captured perfectly by Colin Firth and Elizabeth is so well played by Jennifer Ehle. Mrs Bennet is wonderfully portrayed in this tv series...This adaptation stays very true to the book. The set ,music and costume were all very true to that period
    2004 Bride and prejudice I didn't hate it nor can I say I enjoyed it. I guess as an Indian I felt it made Indians and our culture look silly and this didn't sit well with me...my sister felt very much the same. However it was funny in parts and cute in others but tbh I would totally leave it off my own list of good pride and prejudice adaptations
    I watched the new pride and prejudice you were saying you can't find online. It's really silly and not compelling. I watched it till the end even though I kept wanting to turn it off.Would not recommend.

I personally preferred the faster pace because it held my attention consistently. Loved this! I have to say I love the 1995 adaptation, but possibly because it was the first one I saw. I do really enjoy the latest one, it's a beautiful movie :)

    I am a FOOL for the 2005 version, oh my goodness. I had been wanting to see that movie specifically so I read P&P just to see it. I don't think I could watch another version and love it as much, but I do need to check out the Colin Firth one. However, I loved all of the actors/actresses in the 2005 version, specifically Keira and Matthew, so it's not surprise.

      Kayla J. I felt like that when I'd only seen that version, but the more I watch the 1995 one the more I have to accept that their characterisations are probably better. I know what you mean though - I just loved it so much and couldn't imagine anyone being better!

    I think P&P 05 is a very pretty movie. It successfully combines Bronte with Austen to give a very feel good chick flick. It's not Pride and Prejudice. The characters aren't Lizzie or Darcy just rather their namesakes. The characters are from the foundation up just stoutly unlike Jane Austen's characters it's hard to take them seriously. Which I found I couldn't do as an adaptation. I liked the movie..Keira is a very pretty Lizzie but she isn't a modern woman in a restrained society. Because everything is so darn modern. It's not just that everyone behaves over the top they seem to be no etiquette of any sort. Ppl half naked outside or wandering into bedrooms..it was weird to watch to say the least.
    In 95, you're right that it had more time to develop the relationships and characters but so did the 80s version. It doesn't mean that worked. The 95 version works because it's naunced, the attention to detail is astounding. The social etiquettes are very much in place as are the essence of every character. Which is why you understand the journey Lizzie and Darcy go through is so important. You feel it with them, and fall in love with them. Lizzie is a woman who doesn't want to be swayed by anything but love and respect. Darcy just very much ends up making acquaintances - something he didn't believe capable as they are all gold diggers according to him . It's a poignant story, one which is lost in the 05 version. I don't blame them for going the other way, as 95 version got it so right.

    The Kiera Knightley version is my favourite. I love everyone cast in it, Darcy and Elizabeth are perfection. I'm not really attracted to Colin Firth so I just can't deal with him as my Darcy.

    I think the version you watch first become your favorite version, except if it was made in the 80s. :p

    I really liked the 1980 version. I think its just as good as the 1995 version.
