When Ben released his Escapism mix CD almost 20 years ago, it was the major inspiration for me for wanting to spin on three decks. I liked this set a lot more then what I heard from Jeff Mills, whose sets, while undoubtedly technically impressive and funky, were always pretty chaotic. But with Ben Sims everything flowed together so smoothly as if the tracks were always meant to be arranged exactly like that, with not even the slighted imprecision in the mixing. An absolute masterclass in techno DJing! Great to see he's still at it and continues to inspire. Truly one of the best ever!

So good. My main question about how this is done is what are the CDJs playing… full tracks or is he setting loops? Would anyone guess if each of the 4 CDJs serves a different purpose? (Like one more for percussion one for basses, etc…) how much does a dj prepare their set ahead of time? Or is he just winging it knowing his selections well and grouping by key/bpm? Im clear on what the mixer is doing but not the 4 decks really. Any insight much appreciated!
There’s 4 decks but it says 3-deck mix so I assume he’s only using 3. He often has 2 tracks playing at the same time and then the 3rd is necessary to queue up the next track/drop it in. I don’t think he loops or manipulates the track in terms of structure but as he gets through 30-50 tracks an hour ( 50 in this case) he’s only playing each track for a short period. It’s very impressive

Yes but it’s part of the chaos and drama with Mills sets that stamps his signature on his sets. He does not aim for perfection, more to experiment.
