Honestly, i prefer the 4h edition. I like very much the “opium dream” version. Noodles will always live with guilty for raping Deborah and betrayed his friends. And even if this theory is not true, Noodles will leave in peace. Deborah forgived him, and with Max ‘s death, he will be able to live his live peacefully, knowing that he is not the traitor.
I think 2 hour version of this film (with this climax) is better. I think one of the reasons why the studio made 2 hour version of this film also has to do with the fact that they found the future being part of Noodles' dream at Opium den in 1933 as idiotic. Sergio Leone's words (in an interview) were "an opium induced dream." I also think that the dream theory is absolutely idiotic. For example, Noodles watching the news through 1960s color television is a great example. Other examples include 1960s cars, 1960s constructions, 1960s dressing style, 1960s surveillance camera (connected to tv in color), etc. which indicate that these cannot be not dreams. It is not possible to dream those things at an Opium Den by Noodles in 1933. From what I know of, American electronic television was sold to public starting only from 1938. Color television was commercially available to public only from 1953.
I think noodles did have an opium induced dream that was vague and the movie filled in the gaps like cars and tv etc for the audience. What I mean is noodles was dreaming about max surviving in a broad sense and the movie added the rest
