I use a 22 long rifle for squirrels because it is not as loud as a 22 magnum and that matters. I would say this “hillbilly” demonstration is the best comparison I have seen between the .22lr and .22 mag. I get tired of people always saying that you are just wasting money getting a .22 mag revolver when a .22lr will perform just the same. The .22 mag beats the .22lr in every way. Great video.
That's pretty impressive penetration for the .22 WMR. That would not be an awful concealed carry gun at all, especially for someone who is recoil or blast sensitive, like my sister-in-law who has physical limitations due to an injury. Heck, I would not feel under armed myself. Nice job. Thanks.

@@SkateAndReview Good for you. The simple fact is that not everyone can edc a .45. I have a friend that's 6 foot 9. That's why theres so many different platforms and calibers
I have an NAA ranger 2 Breaktop that is chambered in .22lr and .22 magnum, using interchangeable cylinders. It's a 2 1/2 inch barrel, close to your 3 inch barrels there. WOW. I've been carrying it in .22lr but the .22 winmag is amazing by comparison in these (slightly longer) short barrel lengths. Much more power. I should carry it in that instead. This was helpful, thank you.
I ran this test with my NAA .22 Mag (1" bbl) vs. my S&W .22 mag 648 (6" bbl). Shooting both initially showed me a big difference with the NOISE! Then I saw the difference in the water-filled, 1 gallon plastic milk jugs. Wow! The .22 LR put a cute little hole in a jug, the .22 mag split the jug in half. That's about as scientific as I can get, but of course there is a big difference between the two weapons. Great video Buffalo, thanks for your time!
"Heck, I just like to shoot anyways." That about sums it up for me. Anything, anytime. Nice looking range by the way. Wish I had one like it. Nice setup.
I got to see about 22 LR rifle damage out of a 22 Magnum handgun in ballistic gel, but my numbers were quite a bit lower with my 2.5 inch gun. But I was really surprised about how little damage the 22 LR did against the door. I wouldn't feel so confident about punching through light cover with one if I had to. But that Magnum punches through like a rifle would. Great video! It needed to be made.
Winchester developed the 22 mg in 1959. The intent was to give rifle velocities with a 4 inch pistol. So your conclusion is spot on. It never really caught on because it was intended for varmints. BUT because most varmints are small and several yards distant, most farmer types (and the like) had trouble shooting handguns at small targets. The good ol' 22 rifle is found on nearly every farm in America for good reason. Even grandma can use it.

Your content is top notch. Brief and to the point. I'm a big fan of the 22 WMR and am old enough to remember well the whoopla when it came out. I would have no problem carrying one for self defense. Big big advantage over 22LR.
I loved it. And yes sir you proved that the 22 mag is a lot better in a revolver. So much so that Margarets hand strength is so bad she carries her MP 22 compact. But she likes the LCRX revolvers. I will show her this and see if she wants one now in 22 mag. She can't handle anything bigger so she can shoot 5 and then get her knife. Thanks buddy we old hillbillies love these test👍
Best demo I've seen for velocity and penetration. I have done the chronograph with a Ruger LCR for the 22 magnum and Ruger GP100 LR. I got pretty much the same results.

Actually kind of liked this one, I see so many people on youtube that seem to be out to just waste my time, but this was a good, quick, and informative little piece, and I enjoyed it. I was kinda surprised by the chrony readings, and then when I went back and pulled up the ballistics by the inch chart I remembered...pretty sure they included the chamber in the barrel length. People have a lot of dumb sayings when it comes to guns and most of the time just repeating what someone else told them. I still go 22lr for my normal carry pistols around the property. Extra 100-200fps doesn't mean that much to me and I'm really accurate with my HP22a, plus usually it's just critters that get shot at around here, but even in town I still have the 22lr. I believe it'd be slightly more effective than a pen knife, which is all I carried for most of my life.
Buffalo, just wanted to tell you how much I love your stuff. Thanks for all you do! You rank up there with Plink, Mixup and Hickock in my book. Love you man
Great Vid! Enjoyed every second of it, 22's are full of interesting performance variations. Thanks for taking your time to demonstrate the differences between these two Ruger revolvers.
Carry the 22. Mag...I have a four inch taurus tracker...both cylinders...I like the 22 long rifle out of a rifle and pistol...the 22.mag is still heavier and a little faster..better for home defense or personal protection...even if it's a little better..and faith in God through Christ in these times. Nice clean video. Love it.
I've done a variety of tests on this myself. The conclusion was that, although .22 Magnum always beats .22 LR, the difference between them grows less and less as barrels become shorter. .22 Magnum seems to really suffer in a revolver too. Cylinder/barrel gap and forcing cone dimensions appear to have a substantial effect on it. I've gone so far as to completely rebuild revolvers with very tight forcing cones and gaps set as small as .0015". There were significant velocity gains with .22 Magnum in my tests in very short barrels. Of course this is hardly conclusive, and could be different with different ammunition. That's only what I saw. For some reason, the forcing cones in .22 revolvers generally seem to have far larger dimensions relative to bullet diameter than in other calibers, and that appears to cost .22 Magnum some speed. But it will always outperform the .22 LR to some degree in the same barrel length no matter what. Though sometimes the difference is very little. This is most observable in the mini revolvers with 1" barrels. Not a lot of difference, but some.
Thanks for the demo and going through the numbers. While the 22 WMR has superior performance, I don’t want to be shot in the face with a punny little 22 LR. It would make for a very bad day.
That's my sense too. The LR wouldn't stop a crazed or drugged-out attacker (unless the shot were perfectly placed, which would be tough in a wild situation) but for an attacker who valued his life and body, I expect that would hurt, and get him running away. Which of course would be very good.
Kinda, but the recoil of the 357 out of a 2 inch is not for the faint of heart, or weak of hand. Paul Harrell suggested people fire 38 wadcutters for self defense because they are 'pre-expanded' (not his term), instead of the hard recoil of the 357.
@@markh.6687 true to a point. I own a 640, 2.5 inch 66 and a 2.5 inch 66. I find .357 out of a j frame...of putting. From a K frame recoil requires concentration. .357 from the L frame is a pussy cat
@@ftdefiance1 Exactly; especially with the 'shoot once a year' gun owners; better to be able to hit with small-frame 38's multiple times to make the holes. I owned a 66 years ago, 4" barrel. Fired some 357, and decided that 38+P was a better fit for the gun and myself, and more accurate. I did shoot a little 357 out of a 686, and that was a much better combo of gun, ammo, and accuracy.
9mm from a 2 inch snubnose get sligtly higher velocitys than a .357. 357 from a 2 inch snubnose is totally stupid. You get much more recoil, blast and noise for nothing!
I agree that the .22 Mag beats .22 LR ; but The Little CCI mini mag held onto its virtue , that We can not deny . Great and honest video as always , Sir .
My EDC has a 1 1/8" barrel, and the 22lr actually out penetrates the 22wmr. I still carry with the the 22wmr rounds, because the increase in noise and fireball has great deterrent value as well.
would be more interesting comparing the CCI 22LR Velocitor HP that is also a 40gr rated for 1435 fps vs the 22 magnum though than the cci minimag. but yea the 22 magnum is a more powerful round
Yes that was my first reaction too, How would the Hyper velocity 40 grain 22lr compare. The door test was extremely effective in demonstrating the dramatic difference between the two rounds. Maybe more so than ballistic gell as it is more relatable.
We all need a .22 caliber gun/guns as a fun gun to shoot and for our shtf package. In my house the .22WMR is the 22 caliber round that we "horde" for shtf situations. It's a great small game round, but it can be of some benefit as a defensive round also.
Absolutely awesome comparison video! I did a informal (not on video and no chronograph) comparison with my old Heritage SA revolver. It came with both a LR and a Mag cylinder. And with it's 5.5" barrel the difference in the very unscientific yet greatly amusing penetration tests I done was a real eye opener to say the least! Prior to that test I had thought "yeah the mag would be better, but not all that much and not worth it" Boy was I wrong! 😆 Great vid dude! I like your style!
One thing I noticed with .22 WMR/LR conversion revolvers, is that barrel length matters. Before I had a chronograph I noticed that in the 1" NAA Mini there wasn't much difference, but in my 4.6" Ruger Single Six there was a huge difference. All my conclusions were based on just shooting stuff. I had guessed in the 4.6" barrel I was getting 100 ft lbs vs 150 ft lbs so I was close in my guess. My fence post tests with the 4.6" barrel said it all lol. It would stop all .22 LR rounds but the Magnum would pass through. An extra 50 ft lbs is nothing if we are talking .45 auto, but in a .22 cal bullet 50 ft lbs is HUGE, like doubling it's potential essentially. People don't understand scaling, but .22 Mag is way better than .22 LR.
Nice video as always. And that 22lr going through one door is still serious damage out of a small revolver. Humans are far softer than even one of those metal doors, so that 22lr round is definitely deadly
Not a big gun enthusiast, but i did just buy the Ruger 22 LCRx wondering if i had bought a decent home defense revolver that also would be a good range plinker. Hill Billy or no, you convinced me i did OK Like your presentation. Straight ahead without all the "stuff" some use to introduce their thing. Real info wins every time. Thank you.
As a hill billy myself, and growing up on a post depression era farm out of the '40's, my Dad used a 22 L.R. rifle at close range exclusively to take down his steers for butchering. The animals were invariably dead before they hit the ground from a single well placed shot between the eyes. I learned very early on that the 22 L.R. was to be seriously respected, The 22 Mag all the more so. These are very serious little cartridges. This was a great test..thank you!
I have done the same. I can attest that a well placed 22lr will instantly drop a cow and is more effective than a poorly placed .40 s&w. I used a .40 last steer i butchered, i didn't hit the right spot and the steer did not drop.
On the one hand I'm one of those guys who think you could've done a better job matching the ammo for comparison, the CCI Velocitor .22 LR 40 grain @1435fps would've made for a more equal comparison. On the other hand I can appreciate what it's like to get your hands on ANY ammo these days... Either way, thanks for the demo. Well done
I had my Ruger Wrangler rechambered in 22 Magnum. It increased the accuracy, and of course it increased the power. Lots of rounds fired through this thing. It will definitely handle the 22 Magnum cartridge.
The chronograph's Standard of Deviation for the WMR (think of it as velocity 'grouping') was 60% of what it was for the LR. That makes for more consistent shooting.
I have the same wish. I love Ruger's LCR line and 6 shots of 22WMR is good but 8 would be better. Taurus makes that 8 shot 22WMR right now and it has my attention.
I've carried a naa 22mag for 40 years. The mag is definitely better. The biggest advantage is the reliability of the crimped shell and bullet construction. I've washed them in my pocket many times and they always go bang
To all of the naysayers: if it says “Magnum” on it, it’s more than likely superior to non magnum rounds! I do really need to get me a .327 wheel gun though. I’d seen it tested out before, being a dual caliber revolver, but your review cemented that in my brain LOL

327 is an interesting round, but it is LOUD! I mostly shoot 32 h&r in mine, and if you handload the h&r can be a very respectable round... Buffalo Bore h&r's I only shoot in heavy duty Rugers, they stick in my 327 Smith and don't know if I would shoot them in an LCR.

I agree with everything you said. I don’t have a .22 magnum handgun anymore since I sold my old Ruger Single Six. I remember testing both cylinders after I got it and finding out that the magnum was much more powerful out of the same exact revolver. I remember how the Winchester magnum ammo was so good at penetrating and hanging together. It got me to using Winchester Super -X ammo for everything. It was good ammo, but I haven’t seen any for sale in years. I suppose it is still made, but just hard to find.
Nice job! The 22 rim fires are certainly under estimated! The 22 mag is a formidable game round if shot placement is considered. Only negative is the rim fire part. Centerfire cartridges are more reliable.
👍 good information and I was a little surprised at the LR on the doors . There’s still plenty of space on the doors to try the Stinger and Velocitor if you have them to see if one of them can get through one door. Thank you and stay safe 👍
I will take your "hillbilly" demonstrations any day of the week! That shows the performance differences that just 10-15% can make. The only other consideration I would think about when it came to the revolver would be that the 22LR has more rounds to fire before a reload is needed. However, the 22Mag is just more effective. Have a great day!

An interesting comparison, especially with the demonstration of the impact of velocity increase (and perhaps bullet construction) on the grill doors. I have researched published velocity differences between 22lr and 22 mag in a 5 1/2 inch barrel, as in my Single Six old model. These average approx 1100 fps for 22lr and 1400 fps for 22 mag. I also remember when I first fired the 22 mag at longer ranges (50-100 yds) that I was quite surprised that the mag did not show very much drop at those distances. This convinced me that in a 5 - 6 inch barrel the magnum round was clearly superior. This raises an interesting question as to home defense use - is a 22 mag handgun superior to a 22lr rifle? While the handgun has the advantage of portability, concealment, and "simplicity", the rifle is not as loud - particularly indoors - and offers a much higher capacity.
excellent report, i was just thinking of this issue as a top handgun for me is a 5.5” ruger single six. for outdoors protection it’s loaded with 22wmr, which is too much flashbang for me indoors.
picked up a Taurus 941....not a 942.....almost identical. It was used, but very little. When I cleaned it, there was still red packing grease in some of the sharp corners. I took it to the range and fired 8 Winchester rounds through. Fired every one and pretty fair accuracy at 12 yards. When I tried to eject the spent shells, they wouldn't move. I had to tap the rod on the shooting bench. Second batch left me with the same results. I took it home and cleaned the cylinder out extra well and oiled it up. Then I went to eight rounds of CCI. The CCI rounds were shinier and smoother than the Winchester. No problem ejecting the spent shells. I didn't try any Winchesters, but will do so next time at the range.
Good test and illustration of how the difference is more extreme than initially indicated. BTW I like punching holes in paper but shooting stuff is always more fun.

That's why theres so many different platforms and calibers
@@weirdshibainu Colt Commander would be a good choice it holds 14 bullets and it's fairly small
This demonstration gave me the info I wanted to make a choice between the two calibers in 3" revolver.
I am so glad I found this video.
Thanks man. I really appreciate your support if this channel. I really enjoy your videos as you cover topics like this really well.
Don't mean to but in but seen where Buffalo watches your channel. I went and checked it out and subbed. I like it👍👍
As another gun tuber likes to say “your mileage may vary”
Thanks for taking the time do do all this.
Outstanding video! I loved the "hillbilly" penetration demonstration. It really gave a visual to what the numbers mean.
Hey I just want to say thank you for supporting this channel. It means a lot and allows me to continue doing videos like these!
I have been watching all varieties of gun channels on TH-cam for over 10 years and, I must say, I find yours to be the most entertaining, the most laid-back, the easiest to digest and the most enjoyable. Your delivery is unassuming, straightforward and factually accurate. Please keep it up and don't change.

Good job. I understand that you don’t feel that you’re an instructor or teacher per se, but you do an excellent job of explaining what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. Thank you for a great video.
Indeed!
Great video I always said I'd have no problem carrying a 22mag revolver for edc
Terrific comparison. Came looking for some guidance on which I would want your demonstration and commentary was exactly what I was looking for.
Nice demonstration. 22wmr is my favorite small-medium game load.
Best demo I've seen for velocity and penetration. I have done the chronograph with a Ruger LCR for the 22 magnum and Ruger GP100 LR. I got pretty much the same results.
Right at the end you say “Hillbilly - I know…” as if that’s a bad thing. Brother that’s why we watch you. We love you! You are us! If anybody calls you hillbilly in a derogatory way, i would delete them. I am from the great plains. We do not have hills, but we are, like you, hillbillies - masters of the rural realms, vanguard of the unpopulated lands, and we prefer it that way. We like how you think, how you handle your content, your production schedule, & especially that you think & act like a man should think and act - God is first, family and country second, i am third. God bless you brother!! Keep up the good work.
Love you man
Man, this guy is so likeable. Easy subscribe.
Who needs ballistic gel. That 22 mag would be a lot scarier after dark. The muzzle flash not to mention the sound. 22 mag all the way.
Excellent Test. You definitely proved the extra punch of the 22 Magnum. Thank you for sharing this.
The tests are the proof. Also, 2 companies now make .22 WMR rounds specifically for short barrels. See Buffalo’s video regarding that.
It's a great day to be at the range so long as you don't live in New York State!
I loved the ballistic grill doors that was awesome.
Buffalo is one of my favorite TH-camrs! Well worth the subscription!
you are spot on 22mag is my choice I do like the 22lr as well these are great guns thanks for sharing
Only problem with 22mag is the trip to the ER if you forget ear plugs. LOL
They're both extremely loud. 22lr out of a short barrel is 140-150 decibels and that's ear damage territory.
I had a .22 mag pump rifle and those suckers are LOUD! I’d hate to hear them from a 3” barrel.
Which of course would be very good.
love this channel, the quality of the videos, and it seems like when I am searching for things your channel always pops up, proud subscriber!!
Let me add to the chorus of praise. 1st, awesome vid....as usual! Honestly, you are running one of my very favorite Gun channels. Thank you!
Nice to see the difference between the two on the door
Kinda like the argument of 38 &357 in a 2inch
@@markh.6687 4 inch is the minimum for 357 mag.

Thank you sir. I've been shooting for 50 year and never thought about it till now. I always changed the cylinder.
My EDC has a 1 1/8" barrel, and the 22lr actually out penetrates the 22wmr. I still carry with the the 22wmr rounds, because the increase in noise and fireball has great deterrent value as well.
Great video!
If it was me.. 22LR for camp/fish/trap/plinking since you can use 22short, 22long, 22LR, 22 shotshells... 22MAG for self defense.
would be more interesting comparing the CCI 22LR Velocitor HP that is also a 40gr rated for 1435 fps vs the 22 magnum though than the cci minimag. but yea the 22 magnum is a more powerful round
Yes that was my first reaction too, How would the Hyper velocity 40 grain 22lr compare. The door test was extremely effective in demonstrating the dramatic difference between the two rounds. Maybe more so than ballistic gell as it is more relatable.
Shooting at everyday objects beats shooting paper targets all day.
If this kind of stuff is being hillbilly then there are a whole lot of hillbillies across this nation, I just call it having fun
Amen.
So true, thank you.
We all need a .22 caliber gun/guns as a fun gun to shoot and for our shtf package. In my house the .22WMR is the 22 caliber round that we "horde" for shtf situations. It's a great small game round, but it can be of some benefit as a defensive round also.
I would enjoy seeing the same comparison using .22 magnum ammo and standard .38 special 148 grain wadcutter ammo. Thanks for an informative video!
There are videos showing that
If a person has never shot an old refrigerator, washing machine or grill.....they are missing out. Nice video Buffalo and a point well made sir.
Thanks ,Buffalo ! Interesting stuff . I wouldnt have thought there to be that much difference between them in a 3" barrel.
Ballistics have their place. But the door shooting demo gives a real life picture of what these guns and ammo can do. Great idea!
Prior to that test I had thought "yeah the mag would be better, but not all that much and not worth it"
Boy was I wrong! 😆
Great vid dude! I like your style!
Oddly I have not seen this simple but important comparison anywhere else. Good work!
I noticed the noise from the Magnum was a lot more too. Recoil looked significantly more, but not like a 9mm. Sound right?
Noise is louder in .22 magnum I have a revolver with changeable cylinder
Its test like this that make me think my Charter Arms 22 wmr pathfinder might be my best carry gun. Super light with no appreciable recoil.
Nice video as always. And that 22lr going through one door is still serious damage out of a small revolver. Humans are far softer than even one of those metal doors, so that 22lr round is definitely deadly
Those are stainless doors, awesome demonstration! Gives viewers an excellent idea of the force of each. Thank you. 🙂Very impressed.
Experts arguing in corner. Buffalo Outdoors, "hold my beer." Does grill door demo. Mic drop.
22 LR or Magnum is no joke. Proper bullet placement and they are effective. Great demonstration and statistics, thanks for sharing.
You could literally HEAR the difference.
Thank you.
Great info and video as usual. Surprised the 22lr didnt penetrate completely. Still fun gun to shoot. Cheap too!
I didn't know what would happen but it ended up being a good visual representation of the numbers over the chronograph so I was happy about that.
Much has been said about these two cartridges, I hope this puts the issue to rest. Nicely done.
Well done
Really great video Buffalo!
The audio is nice and clear with those .22 rounds.
My neighbours were about ready to call the police!
A little love for the Buffalo; don't give the haters a reward of a comment, sir. your great in what you produce.
Great vid! Shooting the door gives you a different perspective. I just wish Ruger would have made that 22 mag with 8 shots like the LR
Buy a Taurus.
The most commonly carried ammo is the best comparison, it's real world.
That "hillbilly" test at the end was great, thanks for running the video!
To all of the naysayers: if it says “Magnum” on it, it’s more than likely superior to non magnum rounds! I do really need to get me a .327 wheel gun though. I’d seen it tested out before, being a dual caliber revolver, but your review cemented that in my brain LOL
I haven't seen .327 magnum, .32 shorts, or .32 caliber anything in my neck of the woods. How about your town?
@@herewardthewatchful1014 Here in NH there’s a pretty steady amount through local gun stores, but if there isn’t, the Kittery Trading Post In ME is a short drive from where I libe.
@@mjo4981 oh no doubt, but nobody takes 32 H&R seriously, even though it does have its uses! I've seen a couple of videos that were using an LCR, so it'd probably be fine.
Your test results demonstrate that both rounds demand respect. Do not underestimate either. Thx for your video.
carry a 22WMR as my daily CC To anyone that scoffs at 22 WMR run out 50 feet and let me shoot at you!!!
Don’t you just love it when people always try to caliber shame you for carrying any 22 caliber gun?

Great video! The 22mags even sound louder on camera. I wonder what a 22lr 40gr Velocitor would run from the 3in bbl... 🤔 The jackets on the mags def help their performance Thanks again Buffalo 👍
Next comparo--32 S&W short or long SWC vs. 22mag.
Mostly because I have old H&Rs, but also just because.
picked up a Taurus 941....not a 942.....almost identical.
Like they say, a picture is a thousand words. it truly show the power of 22 magnum at the end. Not the same as 22 LR. Thank you.
Yes with 3 inch . On 2 inch they are equal.
