What do you think about the build and do you have any questions even about some stuff I may not have covered? This is the happiest I've been about a build so far with the cruiser and after the short trip in the SW of WA I'm so sold on what I've done. It's so balanced and driving is a whole new thing now. Yes I have no awning but I never really used mine before and Yes cargo is limited somewhat but I'm towing on the bigger trips with either the boat, No5 or X2 trailer so storage I'm covered.
Hey Ronny, I've got a 79 series dual cab and a camper trailer. Seriously thinking about a full sized checkerplate canopy. I have the Toyota heavy duty alloy tray. Would that be too heavy?
Hi Ronny, appreciate very much for sharing your experience with 4x4 enthusiasts. Couple of weeks ago I was with my mechanic and asking him to add some stuff for my LC and he looked at me with a smile and said to me "Osman... keep it simple" it really echoed into my ears, when the thoughts of modification comes to my mind the phrase keep on coming back to me, so I leave the desire to obtain them. Thanks heaps Jason (Total 4x4 Care, Seven Hills, NSW).
Very nice setup! As a former backpacker and drag racer, I am trained to pay attention to weight. I went as far as replacing the electric seat tracks with manual. The weight saved was equal to my basic hand tool kit, which now I can also stow under the seat. Paying attention to weight to this level allows me to stay well under limit, balanced, and have capacity for extra food/water/clothes/luxuries as appropriate for the particular adventure.
Lightweight is so hard to do, like you I do 30-40 day overland trips 5-6 times a year in my 80series. carrying what you need IF and carrying TOO much is such a thin line. well done Ronnie, it was great meeting you.
Nice set up mate. You make us Europeans envious with your 79. Keep up the great videos! Your truck has never looked more appealing to me than now. Enjoy!
Hi Ronny one of the tricks I tell every one is to load your 4x4 with every thing you are taking on your trip people and all water, fuel, food and camping gear then drive down to a way bridge, when you come home way the stuff you are taking out to get your weight down under the max carry weight, over weight is the biggest problem I have found on the tracks with 4x4 busted or bogged so the best advice I can give any one about to take of into the outback is cut your weigh down. PS I tried putting my spare on the back and I had a major under steering on the sand dunes.
Great video Ronnie, you did a good job sharing your excitement and satisfaction at the cruiser’s weight loss. Last camping trip I did, my dc cruiser weighed 2960kg. I have bar work, carbon winch and skinny 33’s. Light duty Toyota alloy tray and basic camping gear. My mate’s ranger with a lot of fruit in his fibreglass canopy weighed 3380kg! 180 over his gvm.
brainwashed by toyota..told him all this yrs ago.i watch this for a bit of info & a laugh..he,s still young & trying to learn,,,,slowly...those toyotas never changed in 50 yrs.there a dinasour.dead horse they keep flogging.no frigin idea..over priced,under powered,cramped,p o s.
Ronny, I've noticed for a while your truck has been tail heavy. For that matter I notice that on a lot of Aussie rigs seen on TH-cam. I believe much of it comes down to the rear axle placement on the Toyotas. In the US we are used to our trucks having longer wheelbase. Particularly, the rear axle / tires not being tucked up under the rear doors. It's all a matter of tradeoffs. Wheelbase / turning radius vs weight distribution. I am happy to see you modulating the truck config over time to address this as I have also seen the Nulon project to extend the wheel base on a 70 series to address the issue. I think you are going to enjoy the ride of your truck so much more now. Perhaps less front wheel lift, reduced rear axle damage and more stability and steering response on the track.
It's an issue with the dual cabs. I noticed in the Flinders video that Wayne and Torbs single cabs appeared to climb much nicer, whereas the dual cab is constantly lifting tyres. Too much weight past the rear axle on the dual cabs. But American pickups are very expensive and too big to fit in suburban carparks in Australia, so they aren't practical for everyday use. Dual cabs utes in Australia are trying to do everything so end up being a massive compromise.
@@joebeck3608 yes, I agree very much with you. The parking lots in the US aren't better...they've economized over the years. I have to be very strategic in trying to find a pull-through spot, but otherwise I've gotten used to shoehorning my truck in. I've seen the cost of the US trucks in Australia. You pay a premium to import them there + right side conversion. They are comparable to your 70 series cost here in the US, which is still high by most people's budgets. I always buy used, low mileage, highly optioned. Let somebody else pay the depreciation before me. I'm always modding anyway, which probably would void the factory warranty if I were to buy new. Anyhow, I still love the 70 series regardless. Wish that platform was available in the US.
It really can get out of hand and you don't realize how quickly it all adds up. Keeping it lightweight is the approach I've taken with my 80 series. Something about lightweight builds just feels right when you drive them.
Looks like a pretty sweet set up. Just took a look at the PCOR website, & for me unless the cross lotto gods decided to shine on me $16,000+ just for the tray is absolutely bloody insane
Greetings from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦. Buddy... your truck looks SICK!!! I’m so very happy u are happy. U can TOTALLY feel your enthusiasm about these upgrades on this video. Well done Sir! PS... your videos ROCK! No wonder your channel is growing so quickly. 👍
Superb video Ronny! As an owner of a different vehicle (200 LC), I was interested in the details of your changes, but perhaps more so by your philosophy of weight reduction. Made me think and I learner a lot. Great work!!
WOW seriously awesome build. It looks 100% better & l always thought it looked gr8 but seriously better now. Very much looking forward to seeing how it performs in upcoming vid's. Fantastic job congratulations.
I will agree this is the best-looking stage for your Land Cruiser looks really nice!! Also I just want to add I think that's one of their main reasons why I like watching your series and channel is that it's not every 5 minutes a sales pitch on mods you have made a good Channel out of doing what you love that's awesome!!👍👍
That PDM system is very bloody kewl.....but too bloody complex my old (64) brain. I'd crash off the road trying to remember how many times I had to press each button to achieve a particular result. Great truck and i love the PCOR tray etc. I have a Silverado and the CSM aluminium canopy on it is pretty heavy (extremely well built!!). It was 750kg when I bought the truck. I removed the two swing arms off the back and went back to one spare (mounted inside the canopy). Removed the long rear drawer (it weighed 83kg including the frame it was housed in), removed the large pair of cross drawers (another 45+ kg) and the 3x 100ah AGMs the previous owner had inside (100kg). Replaced the batteries with a single 120ah lithium. Got rid of the two fridge slides with associated cages and replaced with a Engel "bar-type" fridge, saving another 60+ kg. All in all, I've reduced the weight of the truck from 4,650kg to around 4,300kg and I raised the GVM from 4,495kg to 5,171kg. Sweet!!
Build looks great Ronny. Weight is the enemy of a good overlander. Only thing I’d question is, without the awning or other shelter, how do you achieve a camp set up that lets you cook etc when the weather really turns the rain on and you don’t have the trailer? I guess it means that the trailer always goes with you when overlanding? Only problem there is that towing a trailer is also a weight, fuel economy and handling headache in my humble opinion having done a lap of Oz with one. Would be great to see how the camp set up goes when touring / overlanding without the trailer.

Shawno Whale, did the same thing; went from a larger canopy with two spare tyres lots of weight over the rear to a tray back with a smaller dog-box, similar to this. Seems to be the way to go with the 79.
Hey Ronnie! Would you cover the process of getting project black sorted? Best canopy system I've seen yet and when I get a 79 I think I'd like something similar. Thanks!
Great looking set up now. Looks like a good overall configuration with the new tray and changes, then adding the trailer for longer or group trips. This should work very well for you. Waiting to to see it in the upcoming videos.
Looks the goods. If you haven't tried the Toyo open countries yet give them a whirl. I used to run maxxis but after I got the Toyos I haven't looked back.

No worries then Ron But would think you may put one back on for wet camps one day Maybe a short 2000 x 3000 so it doesn’t hang past to much Or the newer 180 degrees version for it more cover But if you have the patriot camper along it will have an awning so your covered Cheers
That is a great comprehensive overview of your build! Also helps me a ton as I try and build on paper my future Tacoma :). Will take a million years of saving but I'll eventually get there...lol. Also, would love to see a comparison between your PDP Power Distribution Module and the Switch Pros 9100. While the S-Pod is loosely similar, the SwitchPro looks almost like an apples to apples comparison? Thanks for the awesome content!
Awesome setup, looks so flipping good imo! Love the great content you always have put out and the quality. Just got myself my first 4x4. Let the adventures begin!
@@zaneh6224 my sister owns the first model X1 camper trailer and she lives in the NT and that goes everywhere, i do realize how much there gear is worth, I've got an basic norweld on my cruiser, less than half the price, but pcor looks sexy as.
Great vid mate FYI, in case no one has told you before, there is a Mt Sleipnir outside of Rockhampton, in the Berserker Ranges National Park. I'm thinking someone with a Scandinavian background helped settle the area. They pronounce Berserker not as a one of Odin's mad Nordic Warriors 'Beserk-er' but as 'Ber-sek-er'. There is also one of the main roads through town with the same name.
The new look is way slicker than the big cage on the back I think. How does the fridge work/handle being out in the elements? Thinking of throwing a fridge in the box but worried about it being out in the open with dust, rain, etc.
Stage 75 Ronny of the 79 ;) , Get a well base extension.........Keep the Existing PCOR tray and Fill the Gap Between cab and tray with a Slimline light Canopy...

@Ronny Dahl -First of all , rig is looking epic !!! Have your fuel consumption improved after the weight reduction ?
How heavy is it now?

With an awning I can’t see the moon or stars 🤷♂️
No worries then Ron
But would think you may put one back on for wet camps one day

Or the newer 180 degrees version for it more cover
But if you have the patriot camper along it will have an awning so your covered

That is a great comprehensive overview of your build! Also helps me a ton as I try and build on paper my future Tacoma :).
Will take a million years of saving but I'll eventually get there...lol.
Also, would love to see a comparison between your PDP Power Distribution Module and the Switch Pros 9100.
While the S-Pod is loosely similar, the SwitchPro looks almost like an apples to apples comparison?
Thanks for the awesome content!
Looks really good Ronny, I'm glad you are getting closer to your "ideal" setup!
love the new tray, looks so cool
Realy nice and smart setup!
Awesome setup, looks so flipping good imo!
Love the great content you always have put out and the quality. Just got myself my first 4x4. Let the adventures begin!
Finally to lightweight, simple and functional..is the way to do off-road!!

Dream rig 👌🏼👌🏼 looks bloody amazing now and tough 🤘🏼
great vid.. very cool upgrades.. i will see them on this years Israeliate bay trip..
That tray looks Awesome, love Patriot gear. Looks good mate
You do realise that tray starts at $14,000 and only goes up from there, yes it does look good, but that's a lot of coin just for a tray
@@zaneh6224 my sister owns the first model X1 camper trailer and she lives in the NT and that goes everywhere, i do realize how much there gear is worth, I've got an basic norweld on my cruiser, less than half the price, but pcor looks sexy as.
How good does that idle sound. Love the exhaust you've got on this
Great vid mate FYI, in case no one has told you before, there is a Mt Sleipnir outside of Rockhampton, in the Berserker Ranges National Park. I'm thinking someone with a Scandinavian background helped settle the area. They pronounce Berserker not as a one of Odin's mad Nordic Warriors 'Beserk-er' but as 'Ber-sek-er'. There is also one of the main roads through town with the same name.
Your truck is fantastic. If you can think about fridge-freezer to cover some how. Cheers
Great video! I'd like it twice if I could! That new setup looks tough 💪
Really interesting to see the changes over the years.
Very good content, as usual :) Keep up the good work mate !
The new look is way slicker than the big cage on the back I think. How does the fridge work/handle being out in the elements? Thinking of throwing a fridge in the box but worried about it being out in the open with dust, rain, etc.
Oh yes, I love that back tray Rohn...just cool looking...like military stealth
Well done Ronny
Stage 75 Ronny of the 79 ;) , Get a well base extension.........Keep the Existing PCOR tray and Fill the Gap Between cab and tray with a Slimline light Canopy...
looks tops Ronny, keep those cruisers light is the secret
And also the biggest challenge
