    CBRN guy here, everything they've said is spot on but to reiterate. If you're dealing with anything other than CS and you do not decontaminat your skin and put on a head to toe cbrn suit of some kind IMMEDIATELY AFTER putting on your mask you will be in a world of hurt as most cbrn threats WILL GO THROUGH YOUR SKIN even with a mask on.

      Not necessary for natural burns like Canadian wildfires. Still good to protect eyes and lungs.

      Some CBRN hazards such as chlorine gas can unalive you startling quickly. To escape a threat like that you need an respirator connected to an air tank. Hazmat truckers have "escape bottles" in the cabs of their truck for this sort of emergency

    • @briankonreiharvey8105
      @briankonreiharvey8105 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

      @@Echo4Mafia So what I’m hearing is, if there’s any type of CBRN event occurs - you’re typical civilian with a gas mask is screwed? Like you’d need multiple chem suits and they’re not reusable and you’d need multiples for each member of a family? So like why would some countries issue gas mask to their civilians?

    • @Echo4Mafia
      @Echo4Mafia 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@briankonreiharvey8105 TLDR, yes if you're in cbrn contamination with just a gas mask you're screwed.
      Long answer, anything is better than nothing and the specifics of the cbrn contamination will dictate the level of protection you need. A gas mask is a great peice of kit to have and it will increase your likelihood of survival considerably. What that looks like depends on the type of contamination you're dealing with. For something like a blister agent, say mustard gas for example, a gas mask will keep you from dying immediately however any skin exposed to the gas will form large puss filled blisters that can cause serious infections without proper care but are survivable. However if you're dealing with nerve gas like Sarin (mentioned in the video) or VX those will seep through your skin in approximately 8 minutes and after that it's lights out. The only way to avoid that would be to put on your mask, move under overhead cover, immediately decontaminate your skin and hair (including holding your breath and decontaminating your face) and putting on a level C or higher CBRN suit. So why would some countries give their civilians masks? Because a gas mask alone, while not the best solution is better than nothing and depending on the cbrn contamination you're dealing with haveing just a mask could be enough to keep you alive. Ultimately all of this gear is useless without proper training. When you're in a contaminated environment the smallest mistake could end you so the goal should be to escape and get decontaminated (by professionals if possible). If all you can get to do that is a gas mask than that's better than nothing if you want suits then you need to understand their limitations as well as how to properly use and store them otherwise they won't do you much good.

    On beards:
    I'll give this analogy. Firefighters are not permitted to have facial hair that could impede the seal of their SCBA. And these are professionals who, likely far more frequently than the military, deal with toxic atmospheric conditions, gasses, vapors, and particulates.
    Food for thought.

      as a frireman, i can tell you that its more of a formality than anything, i have done, and passed, mask seal tests with a beard. But, scbas are positive pressure, so any leak, wastes fresh air leaving the mask, rather than sucking harmful chemicals IN.

      @@TheWtfnonamez Obviously, for people who may professionally have to deal with this, beards unacceptably jeopardize effectiveness in a situation they're expected to encounter eventually or maybe even regularly. CBRN guy (USMC 2019-'23.) In relation to hair, surprisingly the biggest issue Ive seen in my experience is guys with the hair on their head and not their face being too long. Hair that hangs in front of the forehead gets caught in between the mask and the skin if not moved out of the way leading to exposure and mask contamination. Best remedy we found was hold mask by face in dominant hand, sweep hair back towards top of head with nondominant hand, press mask to face, seal, clear, secure mask carrier. Enjoyed the video, good knowledge bombs dropped here guys.

      What do y'all do about glasses

    • @wolfpack2486
      @wolfpack2486 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @qh5545 You have to find and buy or have Corrective lens INSERTS made. There are special adaptors M50 & M53 lens holders that attach INSIDE the mask. YOU CANNOT WEAR REGULAR GLASSES WITH EAR ARMS! This will break the seal on both sides and make the mask Worthless. Buy the Optical Insert adaptors and bring to your Optometrist or Eye Glass store.
      Option is to get a cheap pair, remove arms and ziptie or attach to the adaptor. There are Eyeglass adaptors for M53, M50, M40, Mira CM-8 And one other. (Research that) Good Luck.

    • @thecbrndude6208
      @thecbrndude6208 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@qh5545 There are lense inserts that fit into the mask uses your regular prescription. I would just grab my regular glasses and throw them off my face as fast as possible to get the mask on. If you don't have inserts, breathing still takes priority over seeing.
      EDIT: As wolfpack said above, different masks use different inserts. Find the inserts that match your mask. Some of the inserts sometimes like to press on the face between the eyes or forehead. A quick remedy is to take a piece of 3M adhesive foam and place it in the spot where the insert causes pressure or rubs on the face. This cushions the insert and spreads the pressure out a little bit, but I only recommend this as a stopgap until you can sit down and readjust your mask and inserts to sit comfortably on your face.

      Probably a good reason to have a air quality sensor of some description handy so you know when to bug out from something when your mask won't work.
      I have experience with So2 meters and organic gasses blocking masks from working briefly as a Confined Space Attendant, even with the mask on as soon as that alarm started screaming I was calling people out and clearing the area, but that was at a refinery with an old leaky sulfer handling plant, with the project ongoing to replace it putting us close to the source (ie a wimpy stone's throw)

    One huge tip for people, not all gas masks will work with Night Vision, I bought a MIRA CM-6M because it has great visibility only to do some training with my night vision and the clear windscreen sticks out too for to wear Night Vision, if you are going to use a Gas Mask with Night Vision you have to make sure the mask was designed for that.

    I am an environmental professional and:
    1. Only use NIOSH approved masks and cartridges/canisters
    2. You need to be properly fit tested to use the air purifying respirator aka APR
    3. You cannot have a beard or beard stubble as it will prevent a proper seal (sorry I disagree with you in this after 38 years in the industry)
    4. APRs don’t provide oxygen, hence air purifying. This if you are in an oxygen deficiency atmosphere you’ll die
    5. The CBRN cartridge/canisters only stop Alpha and Beta radionuclides and not x-ray or gamma rays
    6. One can purchase Dragger, 3M, Scott, North, and many NIOSH approved APRs at Granger, or other similar companies as well as direct from the names mentioned. They are expensive. Power on🖖

    For comms, Disco 32 sells a dongle that goes from the exterior electrical connections that the VPU connects into (flap at the front of the M50) and clicks into the top of your PTT. It even has a pass through so you can connect your wired earpro in just above that and receive audio. All while making use of the microphone you installed with your VPU kit. It adds a lot of length to the PTT but makes it so you can just about whisper in your mask to be heard via radio.

      1. Attach the filter but leave the seal on the outer surface (if there is one). These can easily be removed at time of use.
      2. Put the entire mask/filter combo into a vacuum-seal bag and remove the air from the bag (make friends with your local butcher or deli to facilitate access to a suitable vacuum sealer machine!)
      3. Keep it in a waterproof pouch either on your belt or drop-leg rig. In your ruck, trunk, or bug-out bag is no bueno if you need to don it in a hurry!

Drinking cold water while wearing a hot mask and sweating is VERY refreshing xD. This ofc also means that you need to fill the bottle in a clean environment from a safe source.

    one thing regarding filters,
    something i personally got myself was an adapter that allows you to thread into a 40mm nato adapter to a 3M bayonet filter which you often see on their half face masks. CDC at least says the pink 60923s (organic acid/gas cartridge) are adequate for riot agents, so if you're heavily on a budget - it's an option
    perfect? absolutely not, but it's better than nothing at all

      Got a Ultra Elite for 30€ in my country. Some washing and silicon lube later. Its like new :D
      But in Germany they sadly use the rubber straps. Not the mesh. Which starts to hurt on my big head after just an hour.
      Also make sure you are getting a normal pressure version with a 40mm connector. As they often come with a spring exhale valve for positive pressure. As well as connectors for SCBA units.
      Got a AMF12 (Dutch army contract version of the FM12) a few month later. With a "remploy peeler" suit.
      The AMF12 is awesome ! Got a size 1 to fit my big head. And I use it about 2 times per week for 2-3 hours working on projects :D

    MIRA has a number of selections that do not require a proprietary filter; after watching this segment, I got onto the MIRA site and found the CM6M, CM7M, and CM8M. The 7 and 8 are designed with a cheek weld that make it easy to shoot a rifle - I bought a CM8M for myself, and a CM6M for an extra. Both have excellent visibility, as where the CM7M’s visibility is less than 75%.
    All three accept a standard filter size, including the NATO filters. MIRA is planning on applying for NIOSH certification.
    Thanks for a fun and informative segment of Dirty Civilian. I would have been pleased if you guys HAD’NT gassed yourselves, but I admire your commitment to your art! I don’t recommend the turn-it-upon-yourselves for testing body armor.

    I’ve just finished watching your recent video, “Gas Mask for Civilians.” Again, you guys have put out another totally appropriate video for civilians.
    I haven’t checked any of the comments regarding my “two cent.” Something to be on the lookout for when purchasing a used mask is doing an all inclusive PM (Preventive Maintenance) check of your mask. I purchased a used M50 several years ago and noted that the self sealing disk valves were dry rotted and NOT self sealing. This is a definite no go. Make sure that that you review PN71016/10 Issue E. This publication will walk you through the use of the mask soup to nuts.
    Great job guys! I look forward to more great content.

YES, the 130M is made of some chinese components, but it's PROPERLY tested etc.. and the filters are NOT made in china. Plus they had some really nice affordable decent eyewear.

    IMPORTANT NOTE:
    Even with the absolute best Mask and Filters in the world, against legitimate chemical agents, whether industrial or weaponized agents, without a fullbody chemsuit and gas hood to seal the rest of your head around the mask; you're still getting dosed through skin absorption and depending on the agent, killed.
    *Not CBRN trained or Certified, but was obsessed with it as a teen so have read my fair share*
    For instance Sarin was mentioned, this is a Nerve Agent (The same class as VX, though Sarin is less powerful and is the gas itself thus less persistent; VX is so deadly and disruptive because it's a persistent agent aka an area denial weapon. The agent is a liquid that stays around and instead works by giving off gaseous fumes full of the VX) and is just as happy to absorb through your skin as your mucus membranes and lungs.
    Secondly, the "Antidote" is more a vaccine than a cure, as Nerve Agents are ACE Inhibitors; and work by stopping these chemicals from turning off, FULLY activating your CNS and muscles to the point your contorted and paralyzed until the paralysis reaches your heart and lungs.
    Atropine works like potassium tablets vs radioactive Iodide/Iodine or Carbon Monoxide vs Oxygen; it binds to the site of ACE Emzymes in your CNS so the Nerve Agent can't. But If you've already been sufficiently dosed by the agent, like inhaling a Lethal amount of carbon monoxide then trying an Oxygen mask, your bodies already bonded to the agent; there's nothing you can do (Pralidoxime can "somewhat", so is often combined with Atropine in Autoinjectors and during post-exposure treatment for Organophosphate/Nerve Agent poisoning). This is why the very first initial symptoms of Nerve Agent exposure are focused on so heavily in NBC/CBRN training, the Atropine Autoinjector must be administered AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to protect as much of your CNS as you can.
    Symptoms are:
    - Runny Nose and Hyper Salvation
    - Unresponsive pinpoint pupils
    - Muscle twitches/spasms
    For Blister Agents like Mustard Gas, not breathing it in is amazing; but any unprotected skin will still be attacked. (But at least it's not your throat and lungs too)
    For Choking Agents such as Chlorine Gas, a full face mask should be fine as long as you don't have any open wounds or "exposed moist or humid orifices". Chlorine and similar gasses work by creating acid when they contact water/moisture, so don't let them and you should be OK with proper De-Con. However I believe Phosgene can still be absorbed through the skin, so mask protections not universal depending on the Agent.
    I don't remember the details about Blood Agents and how to protect against them, all I remember is they work by blocking your bloods ability to carry Oxygen (So I guess you could consider Carbon Monoxide a Blood Agent?).
