I love Amoeba, i'm french and I go to the store twice in 2012 and 2019. I see the Raconteurs last year and it was my best memory of my road trip in USA. Thanks Amoeba and thanks for your video !
Was working in LA and traveling to dinner and just happened to drive past Amoeba on Sunset. HAD to go in, and was not disappointed. Sorry to hear it has closed.
I’m originally from LA but I unfortunately had to move to Las Vegas back in 2006. I’ve been to the San Francisco location once and I’ve been to the Hollywood spot on multiple occasions. It’s such an iconic place and it really is this magical oasis for music fans.
It is indeed heartbreaking. I've never been to Amoeba records but I already respect it as a God of proper record stores, hands down. Even though I live over in Slovakia and I'm not sure if I ever gonna be able to visit their store I still donated ^^ this thing must keep going!
I live in Tijuana right now but I spent most of my life living in Los Angeles. I loved going to Amoeba when I lived in L.A. They always had all the music and movies I was looking for in any format (i.e., DVD, Blu-ray, LP, CD). It was so cool going there and you would spend at least 2 hours in store because they had so much cool music and movies in stock. Sometimes you would find really rare and out of print LPs and movies there. I once found a copy of Santana III on vinyl for a quadraphonic sound system for about $15. I also loved that you could sell them all your VHS tapes, CD, LP, DVDs, Blu-rays. I once did when I was trying to raise money to build myself a house in Tijuana which I eventually did. They were a great store. Sad to see them go and I hope they will be opening their doors again one day when this awful pandemic is over.
Living in Spain, in my first trip to the US I decided to make a visit to Amoeba SF and it became one of the higlights of that holidays. Besides I felt jealous for not having something similar in my homecountry. All the luck for them! Wish to visit them and the US soon!
I wish nothing but the best for Amoeba and hope they'll bounce back from these uncertain times. I never visited them because I live on the other side of the country, but hopefully if they are still around, I would love to visit them.
Yes, I have been to Amoeba's location in Los Angeles. On separate occasions I found some BB King CDs, some Kraftwerk, and one of the Kissology DVD box sets. The crown jewel of my Amoeba purchases was the six disc Buddy Holly - Not Fade Away: The Complete Studio Recordings And More box set. I even took a celebratory/spending spree trip to the store when my then wife and I divorced. Amoeba was really the best part of my life in the Los Angeles area. I'm saddened to hear of their tough times and I know after all this darkness passes, they will come back strong.
When ever i fly to US Amoeba was the first place to visit always. Always bought lot of records from them and ended up paying excess luggage weight. Sweet memories. I visited all 3 locations. Sad situation really 😢. Thanks for doing this video 🙏🏼. I encourage everyone one to donate.
started going to amoeba the month they opened ,it was my favorite thing to do ,on a colder wintry day on a sunday you would walk in , i always came from underground parking walk up stairs past all the album covers on the wall and you would step into a musical fun zone ,where every room was playing something different, i loved the jazz area where everything sounded so cool and jazzy, my son loved hank williams music after hearing it being played one day while we were shopping,he never payed attention to it when i played it but amoeba playing it,now he fell in love with hank williams , i have other great stories to tell but what i wantto shine a lightb on is how friendly and helpful there staff always was, they were always fun to talk to andv when my son was youngthey were extra cool to him .i hope they come back im already counting the days, and i know it wont be the same i still will believe there magic will carry over in some degree,
I worked just down the street from the Telegraph location in the late 90s, and I spent many, many lunch breaks there buying records and CDs. Definitely miss it. When I wasn't at Amoeba, I was at Cody's Books, another Berkeley institution that's unfortunately long gone.
I live in Kentucky. But thanks to your videos I discovered Amoeba Records. Then a couple of summers ago I'm in Studio City to see my daughter's wedding and took some time out to go to Amoeba and get a bunch of pictures of myself there as well as a bunch of their swag. Their turntable mat is in my collection of turntable mats. :-)
I've been an employee of Amoeba Hollywood for over 11 years. This was a very kind and surprisingly accurate video. Thanks! (Karen is the owner/founder in the back of that photograph. The only mistake was not mentioning her.)
I remember when Amoeba opened in Berkeley and S.F. I used to go to both at least once a week for decades. Must have spent enough money there to buy a house... So many great memories and so many great finds. \m/
My God it's literally a national tragedy. Actually draws tears from my eyes. I bought literally one of the rarest cds in my collection of 17 years, with over 280 unique worldwide releases by my favorite artist/producer/composer "BT" through Amoeba's Discogs presence. I explained that I am paralyzed and on a fixed income, and they were amazingly kind enough to accept my offer for the album, which was a signed copy of Electronic Opus and was released exclusively thru the albums Kickstarter campaign and is even a unique catalog number. I hope they come thru this ordeal even stronger than before. With the rise in physical media popularity and sales and rise in value especially, I think it would be completely possible! Godspeed Ameoba, we the fans will be here waiting for your triumphant return!
The one and only time I went to Amoeba Music in Hollywood was the beginning of last summer. On my way out, I happened to notice that the person in front of me grabbing some music was none other than Quentin Tarantino. this was right around the time of the release of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Needless to say, I couldn’t resist the urge to go up and say hi to him. He seemed just like an average joe, visiting his favorite record store and grabbing some tunes. Massive store, and I felt honored to get a chance to check it out, especially considering the hard times they are going through now.
I lived around the corner from the SF store for a few years. I was initially bummed at the demise of the bowling alley but as a music lover I'm sure I've purchased over a hundred records and cds here. Great store that I hope returns soon.
Last time in LA I was staying a few blocks away so walked down there and spent a few hours looking around. Got a few things. Visiting from Australia. Got the Amoebo stickers on my speaker stand
Haven't been to the LA Sunset store since 2006, was a killer fun experience shopping there.. Dropped a ridiculous amount of money both times. Hope they can weather the storm and resume business once this virus madness is under control.
Amoeba Music in telegraph Berkeley is where my friends and I went to almost every Friday for the last two summers. It sucks to see them not being open, but we can only hope for 'rona to not be so long.
I've been going to Amoeba Music in Hollywood since 2002. I made my last trip for my birthday last year.I was planning to go back earlier this year but the coronavirus outbreak ruined my plans.
Love the Hollywood location. Used to hit it whenever possible, just a massive spot that was fun to dig through and talk to others looking around the same area I’d be in. Was walking out one day with my buddy and Flea walked right in past us, giving each other a what’s up head nod. That was the last time I was there... hope they pick up ok.
I went to amoeba music on sunset boulevard 3 times and it was honestly some of the best times of my life, ive been studying nirvana since I could remember and they had some nirvana stuff ive never seen before and I bought it all, i took my gf and she had an amazing time and I really hope they open that new location
I loved that store!! Whenever my friends and I would be attending an event in LA we always made sure we stopped by Amoeba's!! I bought John Carpenter's Lost Themes at Amoeba and later that day I had Mr Carpenter sign it!! I would also get my blu ray fix there as well. Gonna miss that original spot and i cant wait til they open there new location.
As a blind person I love music obviously and I subscribed to your channel about six months ago and I’m very pleasantly surprised with all your videos! Thank you for telling us about Amoeba Music I live in San Francisco and when I first moved here I had vision and it was the best place to go and lose myself in the isles and isles of records and awesome vinyl! Thank you for keeping us updated and amoeba is one of my favorite places to go and now living in San Francisco it’s still closed so hopefully will reopen but again thank you for all your info and telling us about the struggle of Amoeba Music!
I got the chance to fly to Hollywood over spring break in March this year. Really glad I got to go to Amoeba! Wishing I had picked up more records (and stickers)
Thank you for the update. I am saddened to hear this news. I have such fond memories every time I went into the San Francisco or Berkeley locations. I only got to go to the Hollywood location once. I recently placed an online order with them and just a few days later the site was "down" with the notice. I am fortunate I got my order in just in time. I'm probably one of their last few customers. I look forward to shopping there again if they can weather this. Best wishes to Amoeba and their staff!
The first time I ever visited AMOEBA was in the late 90's at the Berkeley location. That same weekend, I also got to vist Rasputin's and the AMOEBA in SF. In '01 or '02 I went to visit the LA location and been visiting there ever since. Besides DISCOGS, AMOEBA was the only other place that always had rare records that I could usually find. The current location will definatly be missed😔
Yes, yes and YES! Since 2003, Amoeba Music has been THE place to go for music and movies. I was looking forward to visit this year before their Sunset location closed but that never came to pass. I’ve been extremely happy and impressed with each experience and I’ve never left the store without finding something special, to which my collection is built mostly from. Also, I’ve been to the San Francisco store and while it’s not huge, it’s still a great place to visit and I plan on going back on my next trip to SF. Definitely looking forward to the new Hollywood location opening soon.
The last time I hit up Amoeba was last year in May... I dropped over 200 buying vinyl.. I also got a free tote bag with my purchase that will go up in my wall once I get my place situated
I only got to visit Amoeba (Hollywood location) once, last October. I'm from Arkansas and went to LA last year for a family wedding. I HAD to stop by Amoeba while I was there, and that place was amazing! I bought several records there that I'd never seen anywhere else. It really sucks that they had to close. Hopefully everything goes well and they open the new location at some point.
What a fabulous place...My fabulous place here in NYC was Tower Records on Broadway and W4th Street..would spend hours and alot of money there....but that was ages ago....😪
Firstly, congratulations on your channel! I am one of your Brazilian fans! ;) This January I went to San Francisco on an exchange program. When I got to know I would be going to the US, I started searching for a place to buy vinyls and I came across the name Amoeba Store. I started checking the website and I quickly became a fan of the store. I wanted to spend a whole day at the store but I couldn't because I had many subjects to study at SFSU. Anyways, when I entered Amoeba SF for the very first time I felt like a kid in a candy store! Unfortunately, I didn't have much time because I got there at 6pm and they closed at 8. And I also had an inconvenient moment when I was paying for the vinyls I had chosen because the attendant at the cashier wasn't really polite to me. However, this didn't stop me from going there two more times during my trip. Thus, I could come back to Brazil with my vinyls, cds, mats, magnets, stickers, and t-shirt that I bought at Amoeba. So, I wanna say that I am an Amoeba fan! I wish there was an Amoeba store overseas, especially here in Rio, Brazil!
I went to the amoeba in hollywood a few times. I never actually bought anything there but I have been inside and looked around a few times. I looked in there once on a vacation with my family before I lived in california many years ago, and I went there once with some friends when I still lived in california, we hung out for a minute and chewed the scene.
Hi, I used to work for HMV at Oxford Circus in London. On the 9th of May 2003 we had an instore PA by Madonna !!! We had to close the store as this was a Fan Club event. We had police outside because of the large number of people who found out about it turn up to try and get in. At another time a few members of staff were asked if they wanted to stay after the store was closed because someone was coming in for a private shop, we wen't told who. It turned out to be Michael Jackson & Macauly Culkin. Elton John came in a few times for a private shop as well.
I've only been to that original Hollywood location once. However, I have been to the location in Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco many times. And even though the Hollywood location was bigger and had more to look at/buy, the one in San Francisco has given me more cherished memories.
Always wanted to go to Amoeba, it's sad that they're going through so many struggles.. I do hope that they'll be able to move to the new location and keep it going! Hopefully I'll go there one day :) Great video!
❤ Amoeba. I've never been there as I live in Australia, but I've ordered online from them a couple of times. Their website is really good too, with videos of all the instore concerts and interviews with the bands.
Pleased that I got to visit the Sunset Blvd store before it closed / moved when I visited California 2 years ago (also got to the SF store as was driving the PCH). An absolutely incredible utopia for music lovers. We have awesome records stores here in the UK but nothing on that scale!
Song of the day. Fools Gold by The Stone Roses. It was great to see Paul McCartney shown on the video. I'm a big McCartney fan and I have the Amoeba concert on CD. It is awesome.
My favorite memory at Amoeba is going back 2 years ago. I was in the Hip Hop section looking for a new vinyl but wasn’t looking for anything specific. My friend and I were just digging through everything trying to find something crazy when I found The Never Story by JID. I had barely heard of JID through another close friend and I knew it was a sign to buy it then and there. I walked out the doors with something amazing and when I try searching online for that vinyl it’s basically sold out everywhere.
Sadly I only made it to the "old" Hollywood location once. Was kinda overwhelming to be perfectly honest, but definitely found so much cool stuff while I was there. Especially compared to one of my favorites here in Riverside Mad Platter. Sucks they had to close the Sunset store sooner than anticipated, but when they get the new location up and running I'll make it a semi regular trip.
Family vacation to San Francisco. Wife wanted to go shopping for clothes. I said no thanks. Kids (pre-teenagers)and I started walking around and found Amoeba. We had a blast and spent almost 3 hours in there. The staff was great. Wife had to come find us! Highlight of MY vacation!
We visited Amoeba Music in September 2016 when we were in Hollywood visiting friends. That was also the vacation in which we visited 3 of California's most wonderful National Parks which included my personal favorite: Yosemite! I feel incredibly lucky to have seen these places when I did, including L.A.! It's all at stake this year! Vote!
I only got into record collecting and the whole vinyl thing not too long ago, but I always stopped by amoeba. It was just super sick to cisit and just look around. Super excited to go back when they reopen!
Really sucks that Amoeba's Hollywood location closed like this. Even though I (like many if not all of us) knew about the store's eminent closure, it sucks that I couldn't visit the store one last time. I have some particularly fond memories of going to that store when I was a student at the Los Angeles Film/Recording School between 2018-2019. Whenever I had classes at the school's main building on Sunset/Ivar, I would go to Amoeba during my lunch break. I'd go to the Jack In The Box a grab a quick bite (usually a chicken salad with a small soda) and then spend the next 45 minutes or so just exploring and digging for something new at Amoeba. On a couple of occasions I did purchase records when I'd visit (Prince - Piano & A Microphone 1983, Chris De Burgh - The Lady In Red 45 to name a few). Hopefully the store's able to financially recover and we can visit their new location when it opens.
I was gonna go see The Garden live with my friend Holden at Amoeba, it was gonna be his first time ): I have so many memories going to Amoeba with my dad after my animation class. Hi Metal Jesus Rocks (: 🤘
Back in 2017 was my first time visiting Amoeba. It was a personal mission of mine to pick up 'The Smile Sessions' by The Beach Boys. It was a surreal moment knowing that 50 years prior the album was recorded in the studios up and down Sunset Boulevard, two of those studios just a few blocks away from the store. I also got to visit the S.F. location earlier this year a few weeks before the lock down here in California. Both locations were well stocked, the staff in LA was friendly, wish I could say the same for S.F.
Amoeba LA is one of my favorite record stores. I think Amoeba did a piss poor job during this COVID-19 crisis. I know of other record stores that have online auctions and big online push in general.
This is a bummer I wouldve loved to go to their store one day. Could never get out there being from NY but it was always a dream that wouldve been my first stop while in California
My first time going to Amoeba was looking for a Probot album with my Godfather. It was amazing to see so many CDs, vinyls, and many media. I usually buy wrestling VHS videos, dvds, and a lot of metal CDs. Interestingly enough, I attended Ozzy Osbourne's Ordinary Man album signing. It was totally awesome. Anyway, I hope to see Amoeba open again. I'm in desperate need for more metal music!
amoeba was my favorite record store! i had visited so i could cover up a used album for a school project and was super excited for record store day but it never came sadly :(
I used to shop at the original Amoeba location in Berkeley in the early '90s, and I was there opening day at the SF location in '97. Moved to Seattle in '01 and have been missing Amoeba ever since. I am afraid the pandemic and probable coming recession will kill most if not all brick-and-mortar record stores.
I had been to Amoeba in Hollywood a few times. It was a place where you constantly had to be looking at your watch; you could get lost looking at all the stuff - you finally look and it's next month. My big finds at Amoeba came in the last few years - 2016, 2017 - something like that - I visited a week after RSD one year (the RSD when Phish's came out on limited splatter vinyl) and I found it at Amoeba a week after the fact; that same visit I found a Mo-Fi pressing of English Beat's SPECIAL BEAT SERVICE (didn't even know it existed). A couple of years later I found XTC's ENGLISH SETTLEMENT box set at the Hollywood Amoeba. There have been other things, but those were the biggies for me. Great Video - thanks. And thanks for the shout-out to "Jack's Tracks Records." Jack is doing great stuff and people should be subscribing.
I'm not American and I'm from Malaysia. We have record store but not as big as amoeba. Free streaming music and download has kill all these record store and they have to shut down. Back in the day, there's a lot but nowadays only a few still exist. It is my dream to go amoeba music before I die. If I was destined to go America, amoeba will be the first place I visit. Second place I would go is the birthplace of hip hop. Cheers
Amoeba is a song by the hardcore punk band, Adolescents, which the owner used.. I was in Berkeley back in ‘98 and ‘99.. Scored lots of good titles back then. Some early British and German pressings..
Hopefully they are able to survive. I live in New Hampshire and have wanted to visit LA, with this store being one of the places I was looking forward to the most.

Im glad they didnt move too far. Yes, their staff were always in tune with music compared to most stores i had been to.
I'd ask how much Amoeba paid you to make this video but I'm sure that nondisclosure was part of the deal.
They paid my nothing. I did this for them, to get the word out that they need our help.
It's funny how LP's were what everybody prefered until MP3 came out. 20 yrs later vinyl is back and mp3 is losing its allure.
Capitalism is a joke
“What’s In My Bag” is phenomenal. I’ve discovered many new bands while watching . And...some of the artists’ picks may surprise you.
I love Amoeba, i'm french and I go to the store twice in 2012 and 2019. I see the Raconteurs last year and it was my best memory of my road trip in USA. Thanks Amoeba and thanks for your video !

This is my most favorite record store ever! So sad they are leaving their location, that was a great space.

Don't cry, Amoeba will be alright and you will have opportunity to give them your hard making money again

You know back in the day there was Tower Records. They were the biggest vinyl retailor on the planet. I guess that's where Amoeba got the idea from.

No problem Jack! Keep spinning dude 😊👍
My dads been taking me there since I was a toddler. I’ll miss the LA spot, went there too many times to count.
I have always have gone to Amoeba Music whenever I was in Los Angeles or San Francisco . I loved shopping there!

So glad I got to go to Amoeba in LA one last time back in October. Thank you for sharing the GoFundMe!
Glad you went there one last time! Thank you for watching!
Man, I had a quick trip to LA already scheduled in March just to go to Amoeba, and then Covid happened, so I had to cancel. This really sucks.
the OG amoeba stores are still in san francisco and berkeley. just make a trip to NorCal instead.
Same I was going to go see the garden :(

I just found out that there’s a new amoeba in LA I might check there when it’s open :)
Amoeba Music in Hollywood is the place where artists go to do What's In My Bag episode and they show stuff that they like and what they love about it
Hi, I used to work for HMV at Oxford Circus in London.
Thanks for publishing this. Hoping for a killer comeback. Love Amoeba!
Their website is really good too, with videos of all the instore concerts and interviews with the bands.
song of the day:
have a cigar- pink floyd
I love that song and shine on
I live in Michigan and visited the Berkley store in the late 90’s. What a great experience! Amoeba rocks! 🙏
I love watching your shows, it’s the way you present them.
Pleased that I got to visit the Sunset Blvd store before it closed / moved when I visited California 2 years ago (also got to the SF store as was driving the PCH). An absolutely incredible utopia for music lovers. We have awesome records stores here in the UK but nothing on that scale!
I drove past Amoeba while doing a tour of Hollywood with a family member. Never been inside the store but have a Metallica record from the store.
*searches up how far it is from Branson to LA*
*23 hours*
'Well boys, we're going on a roadtrip'
Sadly I only made it to the "old" Hollywood location once. Was kinda overwhelming to be perfectly honest, but definitely found so much cool stuff while I was there. Especially compared to one of my favorites here in Riverside Mad Platter. Sucks they had to close the Sunset store sooner than anticipated, but when they get the new location up and running I'll make it a semi regular trip.
I donated to the GoFundMe, thanks for the heads up Jarrett!
Thank you so much Robin Beckett! I’m sure they really appreciate it! 😊👍 🎵
Vote!
Excellent choice for song of the day.
Just ordered a few records from amoeba on line maybe a month ago. Some of the language had me hesitant---but order came within the week.
I only got into record collecting and the whole vinyl thing not too long ago, but I always stopped by amoeba. It was just super sick to cisit and just look around. Super excited to go back when they reopen!
Wow, glad I visited while on vacation in 2012. AWESOME experience
DUDE. I planned an entire trip to LA just for Amoeba back in 2018 and I’m so glad I got to see it before it closed 😭
Amoeba LA is one of my favorite record stores. I think Amoeba did a piss poor job during this COVID-19 crisis. I know of other record stores that have online auctions and big online push in general.
Jarrett: Amoeba in Hollywood has closed its doors
Me: When Cameron was in Egypt's land. Let my Cameron go.
in malaysia we have Teenage Head Records.
in malaysia we have a show called Korek Fizikal!
Been to all three locations. The original location in Berkeley was an old grocery store and the one in San Francisco used to be a bowling alley.
I always enjoyed shopping at Amoeba on Sunset. Hoping for the best 👍👍
That's really sad! I wish they can be back soon. For them, for their families, for the music lovers, for the music.
Rhino , Moby Disc & Aaron's were all put out of business by Amoeba. My song of the day - I Can't Escape Myself - The Sound.
amoeba was my favorite record store! i had visited so i could cover up a used album for a school project and was super excited for record store day but it never came sadly :(
The record store I really miss around here is Grapevine Records!! It was the best in the area.
Ameoba started pulling away from selling used records. That really hurt them.
I cant wait for Hollywood one to open again i miss it.
I've never been to amoeba music but I would like to visit it someday
Hopefully the new location will be just as awesome 😎
I'm not American and I'm from Malaysia. We have record store but not as big as amoeba. Free streaming music and download has kill all these record store and they have to shut down. Back in the day, there's a lot but nowadays only a few still exist. It is my dream to go amoeba music before I die. If I was destined to go America, amoeba will be the first place I visit. Second place I would go is the birthplace of hip hop. Cheers
My one visit to Amoeba Hollywood, they not only had the somewhat obscure CD I was looking for, but multiple copies of it.
best record store ever!
