Grant was addicted to cigars and died of throat cancer. Back in those days, there was no Presidential pension. So, as he was dying, Grant wrote his Civil War memoirs to be published after his death, to support his family. The memoirs were very well written and a best seller. I find it sad and weird that the public could not support a hero General and President in his dying days, but after his death, build him this mortuary temple. He could have used some financial support in his dying days.
He also didn't get a military pension at first because he resigned. But I believe others like Sherman worked to get him and his wife a pension before he died.
I learned about Grant’s fate in the movie about Mark Twain staring Frederic March, and Grant was played by Gene Lockhart, who also played Bob Cachet in Hollywood’s version of A Christmas Carol
Grant blew his retirement fortune in a two year round the world trip and ended up broke so as he was dying he wrote his autobiography which made his widow very rich after his death
@@VATravels That’s very true! It didn’t help I went there right around Thanksgiving, though I did get to somewhat see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in person…
If you are a fan of The Golden Girls TV show, the correct answer to "who is buried in Grant's Tomb" is Cary Grant. In a dream of one of the characters (I think it was Dorothy) the ladies were contestants on Jeopardy! and one of the questions was "who is buried in Grant's Tomb?" Rose answered "Cary Grant." Dorothy objected. Merv Griffin comes on stage and says that since he is the owner of the show, the correct answer is "Cary Grant." Then, there was a comment about Mr. Griffin being "the Anti-Trump" since Griffin owned Resorts Hotel & Casino and Trump owned Trump Plaza Casino and Trump Marina Casino. Chris - I hope you're heading north of NYC to the Hudson Valley and some of those wonderful mansions. I have been to Lyndhurst 3 times and it is worth the trip. If you join the National Trust for Historic Preservation, I think you still get discounts on admissions to their museum properties. When I was a member, it was free. I would also like to visit Hyde Park to see Val-Kill and the FDR Home as well as a Vanderbilt Mansion that is nearby. The Mount, home of novelist Edith Wharton in Vermont is also on my list.
Very interesting. Yeah I want to get further upstate. I’m going to make note of the places you mentioned. Have had my eye on Newport Rhode Island for a while.
It’s funny that I’ve been to Napoleon’s tomb but not Grant’s even though I was born in the Bronx and grew up just one county north & have been to the City thousands of times!
Lee was a traitor who resigned from the US Army to lead forces against the US Army. In fact, President Lincoln offered Lee command of the Army before Grant got it. He opted to resign and join the Confederacy.
I don't believe they built that structure for his tomb. I beieve it was probably there for a long time and they decided to repurpose it as his tomb ! How could a horse and buggy generation build that ? We can't build anything like that today ! I believe there is much history that has been hid from us on for generations. And new immigrants would not know the history either. I though the answer to that question was : grant is buried there .

It has a similarity to Les Invalides where Napoleon is buriend.

Similar to Napoleon's tomb.
Interesting fact Grants Presidential Library resides at Mississippi State University. Ironic!!!
Seven mile long funeral procession of mourners. The statue of Lee should have stayed up.

Biggest commander of USA army:General Robert Lee (not Grant)
Good joke😅
