CRAZY 23ANDME DOMINICAN DNA RESULTS! / DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ANCESTRY

  • This was so so interesting for us! Ever since Chris and I met, he has been curious about his DNA and Ancestry, so I got him a 23andme ancestry and health kit for Christmas! No one in his family has done a DNA test before, so it is very interesting to see his results, especially since Dominicans often have a mixed background. We each guessed what we thought may come up, but there were definitely some surprises. The test also gave heath and trait results, which we cover in part 2 (coming soon!) Check it out and comment below your own ancestry/DNA results if you know them!

    If this is the first video of mine you're watching: Hi! My name is Mills and I moved from New York to the Dominican Republic alone in July 2017! I lived in Jarabacoa for a year to teach abroad, and then spent another year in Santiago de los Caballeros. I started this channel to document my experiences living abroad and as an American, female expat overseas, and would love for you to subscribe to follow my journey! My now husband, Christopher and I have just moved to Arizona after completing our K-1 visa journey, and are looking forward to this new adventure, and sharing it with you along the way!

    My fam is from Santiago 🇩🇴 I did the DNA test with the same company and got 57.7% European 30.1% African 6.1% Native American 4.1% Middle Eastern & North African and the rest unassigned. Dominicans are a mix of the samething but we all have different percentages. Some lean to the European side, some lean to the African side, & some are mixed.

      @Jason Young not, the iberian dna, is just iberian, if you have Arabian or Bereber Dna, the test shows you that, you have to research who were the iberians. ....

    • @asermendez2814
      @asermendez2814 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jason Young not, I'm going to tell you again, the iberian dna is just dna unique from Peninsula Iberica, pure dna. You have to see dna test of spanish people, some of them show dna from North of Africa or dna from Arabia,( a minimum, between 1 and 4%)but the iberian dna is unique, it doesn't have any mixture. The iberos was a original tribe of Peninsula, and the Spanish people mostly have this dna. You have a great confusion, bro. And if you research well, you can find that the mostly population in the Califato are iberian people, they just changed the religion. Do you know Abderraman III???? , he had red hair......

    • @asermendez2814
      @asermendez2814 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Jason Young you are so wrong, bro, why when are the Spanish people showing their dna test, just a few people have North African and Arabian dna, and everyone has so much iberian dna????? You have opening a book, I recommend you that.....

    • @asermendez2814
      @asermendez2814 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jason Young that article doesn't deny anything of what I said, one thing is ibearia dna and another thing is north African dna.... And also, that study took people from 3 countrys not just Spain, because its not the same the Spanish dna than Greek dna.... I can show you a lot of studies about iberian dna( in Spanish, I think you can't understand it), which show us that there is some North African dna in the Spanish people, its true, but the the% is low between 4 and 9, and as you go up north the% decrease a lot

    Looks like he is more African than he expected...Not surprised since the African bloodline is very strong in DR 🇩🇴 I'm pretty sure if more Dominicans took the test, they would be surprised to find out how much African blood they posess. Taino would not show up much since Christopher Columbus pretty much decimated the Tainos population and had to import Africans to replace them, therefore giving a much larger African bloodline to the present day Dominicans. Good Video and thanks for sharing🙏🌲 Happy Holidays.

    For everyone getting "Portuguese" in the tests (not this one, though), that's just western Spanish (unless you are from Brasil). They are genetically the same, as they are all Westnorthern Spaniards who populated western Spain and the whole of Portugal. It's funny, because all these people come from Northwestern Spain, yet, because Portuguese are all descendants from these people, it gets called "portuguese", but guys, The western part of the Iberian Peninsula is genetically the same. They should have never divide the Iberian Peninsula in Spain and Portugal, for the people are the same and it gets western Spaniards as if they were Portuguese, when actually, Portuguese are the ones who "are" "northwestern Spaniards".

      By the 1600’s around 10% of the population in today’s Dominican Republic were people of Portuguese origin. Actually the first european immigrant in Manhattan NY, was a Dominican born man of Portuguese father and African mother (Joao Rodrigues). He got the record to be the first immigrant of european, african, latino and dominican descent in Manhattan. A dutch merchant ship dropped him off there.

      Santo Domingo received a lot of converso immigrants from Spain and Portugal. The Conversos or New Christians were Sephardic Jews forced to convert to Christianity or flee Spain under the Alhambra Decree. Many went to Portugal but eventually they were treated the same as in Spain. It makes sense then that they would want to go as far as they can from the Inquisition. I’m not saying that all the Portuguese settlers were Jews but it’s documented that Jews were called “Los Portugueses” at times as a way to set them apart them from the majority Catholic and Spanish speaking populace.

    Just a question. We all know that Hispanic countries are heavily mixed . But Dominican particularly even the darkest ones swear to not have any African ancestry. Some even attributed their darker skin and their women curves to Taino ancestry they may have . But these results just show otherwise. Among all Hispanic countries Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto, Cuba ... Dominican seems to have the highest African ancestry. Maybe this denial among Dominican has to do with the beef with Haitian. So Dominican choose to distance themselves from any African ancestry in order to not be mistaken for Haitian

I'm half Puerto Rican and Dominican, my DNA came out as follow: 72% European, 15% African, 13% Taino. I watched others Dominican DNA test and results are so diverse, higher european or higher African. Dominican Republic is the land where all this crazy shit happened for the first recorded time, thanks to the moronic Spanish Empire "Conquistadores" and the rest of the greedy European countries. But at the end of the day we shared their blood, so.

    • @nydomirican6193
      @nydomirican6193 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Leo Leon I think you're confused with the term Latin America my friend. The term Latin America refers to countries culturally and etnographically connected with latin countries (Spain, Portugal) and some historian included France eventhough there's a huge difference between them but that's debatable. In the other hand theres other words as: "Hispanic America"= Those countries connected culturally with Spain (that exclude Brazil automatically). So the term Latin America specifically refers to countries of "Romance language" (Spanish, Portuguese, French, as derived of latin, Roman Empire language). If you want to pin point an area, the correct terms are: North America, Central America, The Caribbean or South America, or as a whole: "America" continent, to be specific and depending of what country you refer to.

    • @nydomirican6193
      @nydomirican6193 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Leo Leon I find it interesting that there are groups or communities with that way of thinking, but all that only creates a great debate that only leads to misinformation and the creation of false notions of reality. I explain myself: The term Latin America, from a technical point of view, makes sense. The countries that are part of the region have a connected colonial past, whether they want it to or not to the Spanish, Portuguese and French empires. The influences on language, architecture and cultural heritage are unquestionable. And if we add all that to the ethnic diversity that exists in each and every one of the countries, where the european footprint in the DNA cannot be denied, it makes the use of the term Latin American countries a well conceptualized word with examples that science, History and reality give us for granted.

      @guillermone1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Batman B -I doubt it. If he has Jewish roots it’s probably from another generation otherwise he would have already been aware.
      There was a migration of Jews that arrived to the DR from Curazao during the 1800’s. That is in my opinion the most logical explanation perhaps that’s where it came from.
      However It was relatively not long ago during WWll when a group of Jews arrived to the DR specifically to Sosua. They came mostly from Germany and Austria. However the Askenazi Jew kinda throws off my theory because the previous Jewish migrants that came before that were Sephardic or Jews from the Mediterranean region which means that his Ashkenazi roots which originated in central and Eastern Europe is still a mystery.
      How did he end up with that genetic ancestry is puzzling but would most certainly be interesting to find out.
