  • Recently got interested in roasting my own coffee at home. I tried the popcorn maker approach and it sucked. I bought one of these on Amazon for about $35. It takes about 6 to 7 min. so not to long. I usually do this while waiting for the water to boil. The beans come out really evenly roasted. I was very impressed. Though I would share a video on the process. I also wanted to play with DaVinci Resolve and Sony Slog footage from the a7ii.

    Nice video. I really appreciate how you sped up the intermediate parts. So many times I don't watch a video because it's 10 minutes long. The effort you made to value my time is much appreciated.

    I thought you supposed to wait at least 12 (maybe 24 hours ) before grind the beans?

    • @MichaelKirylo
      @MichaelKirylo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Idk I've heard both. I waited about 20 min. Coffee tasted great.

      12 or 24 hrs is ideal, but you can make coffee from the beans straight after the roasting. It will taste delicious :)

      If you use an espresso machine yes but not the way he is making the coffee.

    Hey! I just ordered one of these myself. I see there was a bit of smoke in the process. I live in an apartment complex that sets off everyone's alarms if the fire alarm goes off. Is this something I should be worried about?

    • @MichaelKirylo
      @MichaelKirylo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      do you have an exhaust fan above your stove ? should be fine with that on. most the smoke comes out in a puff when you dump the beans out but its not to bad

    are you using the same beans that have been freshly roasted or some from an older batch? asking bc i have read that it is best to wait at least 24hrs before using freshly roasted beans

    • @MichaelKirylo
      @MichaelKirylo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used the fresh roasted ones. I waited a few min until they cooled. I've hear that about dark roast. that you should let them gas off longer. I think if you do a medium or light roast you can grind it up relatively soon. I don't know I could be wrong. but it tasted really good :)

    Thanks for posting your experience. I just received mine and not disappointed at all. In your video where speed it up, how long into the process before 1st crack and what temperature was your flame? Again, thanks for your video because there is not much else to go on.

    • @MichaelKirylo
      @MichaelKirylo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I keep it on med temp . I let the roaster warm up before I put the beans in .first crack I want to say is about 5 or 6 min. I want to say total roast depending on how dark you want the beans is between 8-13 min .

    Does using an espresso maker instead of drip filter lessen the taste quality of the coffee?

    • @MichaelKirylo
      @MichaelKirylo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shouldn't .

    Does anyone use on an electric stove? Any advice?

    • @StephenJones2
      @StephenJones2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You really should use gas. If you notice, he's holding the roaster above the surface of the stove so he can move and toss the beans as he's roasting, else they will burn on one side. Gas also provides consistent heat as opposed to electric which is on-and-off. You can buy a butane camp stove for about $20 that works very well if you don't have a gas stove. In fact, having something you can use outdoors may be better anyway, as this will produce smoke and cause your whole house to smell like roasting coffee (not necessarily a bad thing, but don't expect it to smell like coffee) and the chaff can make a bit of a mess as well.

    Awesome video man! How was the flavor? And how long did you roast for?

    • @MichaelKirylo
      @MichaelKirylo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sweet. I was looking to grab one of these. Your video definitely made up my mind. Where do you usually get your beans from?

    • @MichaelKirylo
      @MichaelKirylo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shane Bradley been ordering beans on Amazon. can find some decent prices. haven't looked to much yet to find a better source.

    Where does the chaff go. How do u remove the skin of the bean when it pops and cones off

    • @MichaelKirylo
      @MichaelKirylo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pat Trick you can blow into the handle and the chaff will blow out. It kind of makes a mess in my kitchen so I usually blow it out before I dump the beans into the basket.but you can do it while your roasting .

      @pattrick9800 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Kirylo do u think a popcorn popper does the same job as good?

    • @StephenJones2
      @StephenJones2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't used one myself, but I have friends that use them. I would say that, in theory, one can get a more even roast in this device (if used correctly).
      Edit for clarity: I have used the Nuvo Eco, I have not used a popcorn popper.

    • @MichaelKirylo
      @MichaelKirylo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried one of those pop corn poppers that has the little rotating bar that moves the beans over a warm surface and it didn't work very well. I have not tried the ones that use air to move the beans though.

    Just bought one. Doesn't come with instructions. People in videos just start roasting and never explain temperatures or amount of beans nothing. Cannot find a good informative video.

      Did you find something?

    • @steveburgoon3674
      @steveburgoon3674 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @antilopo yes. Pre-heat to about 300, then begin roasting, bring up to 435-450 it will continue cracking. Half pound coffee about 12 minutes roast time. Start cooling before it gets too dark.
