There's no way DM or H2SD are below the Loads.
Reload has way more filler than Load. Fuel is nullified by Low Mans Lyric. But yea, take the best 8 tracks between them and you have a pretty solid release.
Hardwired was their best album since TBA.
And TBA belongs in S tier. You cant separate the impact it had, not only for them but the genre in general. Is it thrash? no. Is it kick ass heavy metal? fuck yeah!

I'm sorry, but putting The Black Album at B is lazy. Sure, it's not thrash but there's so much good songwriting, great performances and sweet production on that album. It's not trying to be epic thrash but middle of the road heavy metal with a beefy sound and an attitude. Whether you like it or not, it should be at A level. And calling The Unforgiven "objectively a bad song" is equally lazy. Otherwise, great show!

This was a fun watch/listen. To me, not sure how And Justice can be anything other than "S". That record is a masterpiece (IMHO). That is the record that changed everything. Metal and especially more extreme metal (which Thrash/Speed was at the time this came out) never was given ANY legitimacy...until this record. People could not ignore this music any longer - they had to recognize the talent of the musicians. At this time, the technical chops were amazing. It was heavy AF, fast AF, but still clean and IMHO, this was the album that basically laid down the gauntlet. ...not just to the world at large, but to the rest of the metal community. It was like, here is something you have never heard before - now top this??? And yes, that evolution has continued since then. But this was a ground breaking, earth shattering moment and it altered the course of metal.

It's kind of interesting how the complaints about Justice that people make here are the complaints leveled at Metallica at the time - and they are the reason they DID the Black Album. So when people complain about either of those albums - they kind of make sense as a reaction to one-another. I guess people hoped that after Justice they would backtrack to something like Puppets again - but they were always moving forward and for better or worse - that's what got us the Black Album. Which is NOT a Hard Rock record - it's a Metal album. That tone, that sound - it's just so.....metallic!

I agree with this ranking mostly. Couldn’t care less about Load and Reload ..a few good songs across both albums.. but besides Fuel nothing to remember much for me. Not a NASCAR fan or pickup driver so not much for me here.
I disagree that Death Magnetic doesn’t deserve to sit shoulder to shoulder with the Black album. I was a Metallica fan from Ride The Lightning and held them high and the Black album didn’t change that I loved it instantly. Bob Rock was meant to just give them the bass and drums sound Dr Feelgood had. The change in vocals came from him encouraging James to sing more and this was also around the time Bon Jovi was doing Dead Or Alive so the cowboy stuff was popular.
Anyway, getting back on topic, I think Death Magnetic would have actually worked better as a transition album from Justice to the Black album as it followed the template to a tee and after just listening to it I think it’s just as good as Black. Originally when it came out I thought it sounded a little forced and trying to sound like Justice but listening to it today it sounds fine. They made a big deal about the solo’s coming back in the advertising and all I could think of was Kirk saying back in 90’s that the Kids don’t want solo’s anymore.
Like justice it is a bit too long especially though Unforgiven to Judas and Suicide. Suicide should have been a B side and even then as a instrumental edited as it’s way too long and repetitive and ultimately goes nowhere. Unf3 and Judas could be taken out too and the songs on Beyond Magnetic put on the album instead. I think it would be better for it. I agree with DK that it is a solid B and is as strong as the Black album. Of Wolf and Man from the Black album is good because it’s basically a Venom song. Just saying.
Hardwired is too damn long and a C for sure, however on the 3 disc version the live disc absolutely slays and is better than the actual album. It’s what totally annoys me about the band. How is it they can play the old classics like a beast yet somehow can’t remember how to create songs even slightly like that. Bewildering, yeah they’re old and different people but at least as musicians they could create something either similar or a little different but have the core elements there. Muscle memory and a little self plagiarism should help right? I mean look at Lux Aeturna , Kill Em All vibes all over it, and Kirk rips himself off in that solo. It’s a solid song, James kills it vocally, and all they have done is rip themselves off lol
The only other thing I would change is the most obvious thing that Chat screwed up. Ride The Lightning is better than Master Of Puppets. It just is no debate.
    Ride The Lightning
    Master Of Puppets
    Kill ‘Em All
    And Justice For All
    Black Album
    Death Magnetic
    Hardwired To Self Destruct
    Load/ Reload
    StAnger
    That’s my Ranking.
Have a great one guys 🤘

Reload has the standout tracks, but WAY more filler and terrible songs than Load. Neither are gems but as a full album experience I'd far prefer Load.

Dekay comparing Rust in Peace to the black album is kind of a cop-out. There was about a year difference in when they were released. Plus as they were saying with Justice, by that time they were already playing huge crowds. I'm sure that had something to do with how they approached this album. Trim it down, and go for what we think the crowd would go nuts for in an arena. No I do not think the black album is their best album. But damn did they do one that had mass appeal. They tightened it up and got great production (the album *sounds* great). There are songs I really don't care for on it for sure. But as for an all-time album? It's definitely good.

"Dickrash"? Wtf? I don't recall that being the title. Who knew.
Also, just for the record, Master of Puppets is a little better than Ride the Lightning. Disposable Heroes, and Leper Messiah are better than Trapped Under Ice and Escape. While there's nothing wrong with the call of cthulu, Orion is the apex of all Metallica instrumentals.

I would never say the black album is the greatest metal album of all time but I think the hate it gets really unwarranted.
Without that album, I never get into not only Metallica but bands like Pantera, Ozzy, Slayer, Megadeth, Fear Factory, Sepultura, Black Sabbath etc.
It’s fine if someone doesn’t like the album but it’s win guys try to psychoanalyze Metallica and tell us why they did it I think is really dumb. They’ve been saying the same thing for 30 years now. I mean Jason has admitted that there were times he got tired of playing inter Sandman on that three-year tour but as someone who’s been in four different bands in my adult life, you get tired of playing songs, whether they’re good or not, even some of my favorite songs, I would get sick of playing sometimes, but he never changed his story on why the band made the album. I mean they have always tried to do something different. You can’t tell me that ride. The lightning is a redo of Kill Em All.
In the 80s they put out four of the best thrash metal albums ever. It’s not like the black album isn’t heavy. It’s heavy as fuck. No it’s not got all of the technical stuff that the previous two albums had but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad album. I hate this stupid argument that music can’t be good unless it’s super technical. I give props to all the really technical bands out there because I know it’s not easy and it does take work but it’s not the end of all of songwriting.
I know it’s the metal thing to do to shit on Bob rock but the guy is a damn good producer that black album sounds amazing. It’s probably the best produced metal album of all time. And it’s not like they hadn’t written songs like that when you listen to how they played live before the black album it’s very much like what Bob Rock says. They had not had an album that sounds as heavy as they do live. Go listen to the album version of songs like For Whom The Bell Tolls, The Thing That Should Not Be, Harvester of Sorrow, and there’s plenty other songs like this when they play those songs live I could easily see those songs on the black album. That black album sounds like Metallica maybe just not as fast but I think it’s just dumb for hating a band because they didn’t do the same thing over and over again.
And yet here we are today in 2024 and their last three albums are the exact opposite of the criticism. He is giving the black and everyone that hates Metallica after the 80s hates the new albums too. So one minute we’re complaining it’s not thrash enough not fast enough and then they go back to that and people still aren’t happy. Not saying any of their albums in the last 20 years are as good as their first five but please show me all the other artist, that didn’t have a dip here and there. Everyone has their peak to think any artist is going to stay at their peak forever is kind of ridiculous.

Metallica after The Black album was total radio rock heavy until 2008 Death Magnetic. St Anger was supposed to be their comeback but they dropped the ball. The garage album was cool and SnM was alright. 90s Metallica was riding the waves from the 80s albums.

Most Rick Rubin-produced albums I heard sound awful (all seem to be in the "loudness war" era). Metallica, Slayer, Red Hot Chilli Peppers...and I'm sure he also produced some pop artists I might have heard an album or two when I was little and then later found out he produced them, and those sounded awful as well (and of course, too loud).
