It's incredible isn't it? One of my all time favourite themes.
I don't know if it's because the tune evokes some sort of primal instinct that unblocks the heart chakra or if it sounds sad because the stupid bloody horse was always getting stuck down coal mines or breaking its legs! 😂

SUPERB! I was a part time stable boy in 1972 and looked after 'one' of the Black Beauty 'extras' as they used several for fiilming with appropriate 'make up' to make the blaze and other markings identical. I was only 13 but this made me VERY popular with the girls at school who were very keen on horses in our area! I have loved this amazing work all my life Im now OLD and still play it! Without even SEEING the intro to the series it is so evocative of a galloping horse thundering across the fields and meadows. Very clever punctuation of the piece with the timpanis, which is the hallmark of this piece!! Thank You Denis King for this wonderful tune!

Hi. On listening to another play of ABBA’s ‘Waterloo’ song, the strong background beat (of drums I guess), evokes (well, at long last does now) the thud of horses racing across the earth, as if in battle at Waterloo. And there is that line in the song, “My, my, at Waterloo, Napoleon did surrender.” I can’t listen to ABBA’s song now without imagining the horses racing into or towards something. Was the song meant to evoke that? Probably not, just the passion of falling in love and the thud of the heart, I guess. It is amazing how subtle music notes can be. Perhaps so many ideas have floundered or evaporated on the slightest misdirection by composers. I am no musician, far from it, but it must be a painstaking task to be a composer, even harder in today’s gadget-ridden world.

As a child I was addicted to the Black Beauty serie and it has always been that way.
Every time I hear the theme of the serie , it makes me very happy.
When the time comes and people have to say goodbye to me forever, the music of Black Beauty will be heard 🐎 ❤

🐎The writer is very modest, but what an emotional theme it is. It has the majesty and benevolence of Beauty, and the yearning of the girl who was most associated with him in the series. That yearning could also be associated with Beauty on his journey to his Forever Home, but I seem to remember the series concentrating on that happy era.🐴

I must admit that I don't sing the song everyday but everytime I indulge it takes me right back to the greatest moment of the 70's when I visited my grandparents. That being said, I never really paid attention to the story in between each week but only the bookends which you contributed to.

Dear Mr King, Good evening Denis. I fondly recall many TV theme shows, with the themes that you composed during my younger years in the 70's onwards, including the beautiful 'Black Beauty' theme. Many BB episodes had a 35 second intro piece of music before the main theme started, and this small piece was also just wonderful. We've never met but may I say 'Thank You' for the memories that these tunes still provide today. Music has always been in my life, reaching Violin Grade 5 by '79' when I left school, more recently I am a self taught Yamaha keyboard player. The world may have changed over the decades, but excellent music stays with us always. Very best wishes to you :)

It's a majestic theme and the most moving theme tune I know. It always had my mother in tears when I was young and has me in tears now I'm older.
I get the same feeling from Churchill's speeches
It seems to represent something like the triumph of goodness, a sense of the world as it ought to be, but which it so often isn't. It is something we take for granted when we're young, but doubt so often as adults. This tune reminds us to keep that spark, that will to always strive for goodness, alive whatever the price is we have to pay. Thank you so much, Denis King, for this beautiful tune, and what it represents.

Years ago, a friend of mine was in the National Youth Choir and he recounted an anecdote when, during rehearsals, the conductor was faffing about and the choir got restless. Someone started singing the theme tune to Black Beauty and, as everyone knew it, they started singing the melody in unison. As the conductor continued to prevaricate, they sung it again, but this time singing the counter melodies, even some doing the French horn motif. Finally they all added harmony, ending up with this wonderful a Capella wall of sound. The conductor eventually got the message and returned his attention the choir to resume the rehearsal, which continued, but only when they finished the theme first! 👍

Dir Sir, My father played the piano very well. My brother even became a professional piano player. I never had the patience to learn the piano. BUT I was about 8 years old and totally crazy about horses when not few boys were and I still am as you can see on my thumb photo. I was absolute addicted to the Black Beauty tv series. I taught myself the Black beauty tune by listening and trying out the keys on the piano. It is the only song I can play on the piano. Still today in my fifties, when I see a piano or people ask if I can play the piano, I do play your theme song. Great to see the man behind the theme. You indirectly have had an influence on my life for almost 50 years now :) Thank you for this great melody which I will carry in my heart for as long as I live.
