Seems like an obvious question, and one that's probably been asked before, but have you seen the classic Victory at Sea TV show, and what are your impressions of it?
As a follow up, is there a British equivalent to Victory at Sea?

First of all, I admit to being a dinosaur. I cut my gaming teeth on Avalon Hill, eventually settling on "Wooden Ships, Iron Men" and "Jutland". I graduated to "Fletcher Pratt's Naval War Game" while in high school (when one lead Alnavco miniature cost me a week's part time wages while working a the local library). I beat Gary Gygax (of "Dungeons and Dragons" fame) in Napoleonics in Milwaukee in 1968 and went on to be the President of the War Gaming Club at the US Naval Academy from 1971 through 1973, during which time I was rated as the #5 wargamer in the US. I have been out of wargaming for decades, but this video intrigued me. How would you compare "Victory at Sea" to "Fletcher Pratt"? I see MANY similarities between the two games. This game might lure me back into wargaming!

15 yrs ago I played a game called Harpoon using 1/2400 modern warships and love painting them. A Knox class frigate is only 3/4 of an inch at that scale. Seeing a carrier battle group fighting a Soviet cruiser group on the table is a blast. Thanks Drac for finding a new game for the table top for all of us to play and enjoy.

VaS reminds me of something I did in the late 70s and early 80s. We played a similar game albeit with different information cards and pieces. Most of us had large (literally) collections of 1:700 waterline models, white metal cast ‘models’ and terrain pieces/markers. We had a ballroom in the recreation center on Aberdeen Proving Grounds (MD, USA) where we’d play. One force would write and follow a set of sailing orders, the other patrol an area or have ‘intelligence’ about the sailing. We would play both Saturday and Sunday one weekend a month. What a blast.

Nice to see this game featured. If you are ok to go out of company to get models, older Axis and Allies War at Sea minis are an option; the details are not as good but they have a good range. Since they are out of production, eBay is the primary route and they can get a bit expensive. Thankfully a mis-spent youth gave me a decent collection. Picked up a few more so my IJN Pearl Harbour force should be fairly complete save a few DDs..
I'm also using 1/700 aircraft instead of the tokens they used, felt those are better. Also, F-toys and gacha lines do have some interesting options, like a 1/2000 Shinano or a Titanic-class dressed up as troopship/ hospital ship.

This brings back memories. My first naval wargame was Avalon Hill's "Jutland". The cardboard counters had ~1:1200 overhead plan views for the major warships, with "dot" ships for light cruiser squadrons and destroyer flotillas. There were ship charts showing offensive and defensive capabilities and a hit tracker, along with a ruler to measure off ranges and distances as this was essentially a minatures game with "flat" ships. Interestingly enough, Amazon has brought out a line of Kindle books on wargaming and wargaming rules going back to Fred T. Jane's naval wargame. I picked up the 1936 rules for the US Naval War College operational/tactical game, which are extremely detailed and cover subsurface and air combat and include such things as smoke screens to cover the battle line as it fires OTH with aerial spotting, and it became readily apparent that the Avalon Hill designers had taken the USNWC rules (down to the plan view of ships on wooden blocks vs. cardboard) and simplified them for reasonably accurate portrayal of the battle within budget and board size availability. I can recall my Mom getting irritated when I was still playing the game on the kitchen table at dinner time. From there I did graduate to actual minatures at the 1:1200 scale using the Superior models and "Seapower" through "Seapower III" rules and then "Command at Sea". For Age of Sail, I had a set of rules called "Wooden Ships and Iron Men" with GHQ Micronaut 1:1200 ships and I did venture into "Harpoon" territory. At the same time, there were counter games such as SSI's "CA", "Frigates" and "Dreadnought". There were the SSG games at operational level with the numbered fleet games "6th Fleet" and "5th Fleet". I cannot remember the game title, but I did try out the computer assisted gaming, where the rules, database and tracking was computerized, but the game play was still minatures.
When I joined the Army back in 1975, I found it harder to find space and time for these games, so I fell off for I while until SSI brought out "Warships", a PC 386 three color Pacific surface combat sim. You were limited to 20 ships and some of the ship's data wasn't quite correct, but it saved you a bunch of space. Looking back at it, other than improved graphics and scale and adding air and undersea combat, "War on the Sea" isn't really better. Steam actually has "Task Force 1942" an older game by Micropose, a similar scale game but one of the first attempts at 3D gaming, with a bridge view from your flagship. Of all the games I've played, the best WW2 surface combat sims, if you can find them and get them to run (I have a 486PC running Win 98 for such games), are Alan Zimm's "Action Stations", which is very much a CIC view of battle, with ships appearing and disappearing based on detection and tracking by visual and radar, which replicates in a way the early problem for USN warships in the Pacific, where ships were lost off radar and couldn't be seen visually and were claimed as sunk, then showed up again as acquired by radar as a "new" target. The Naval Warfare Simulation's Mod of SSI's "Fighting Steel" is still the best 3D surface combat sim. The database is far deeper researched and the ship classes have been extended across most of the war navies. The gun and armor modeling is superior to any modern game.
For Age of Sail, we have Akula's "Age of Sail II", a superior game in my estimation to "Ultimate Admiral: Age of Sail", not the least because it has a database editor which allows you to add warships that accurately reflect their historical capabilities rather than the generic classes featured in both games.
As far as the naval side of strategy and operational art, you can't get better than "War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition" from Matrix. The database has an editor and with some care, you can reflect every warship and merchant ship class and its variants over time. The rules for naval combat (and air) are simplistic but not to the point to render the outcomes beyond those historically possible. But here, logistics has a definite impact of naval warfare. One of the few irritants is the use of oil fuel as the single fuel for ships and aircraft. This fails to reflect the large number of coal powered merchant ships and the use of diesel among both warships and merchant ships and the use of AVGAS for aircraft.
There are two games I am disappointed in, but this is my opinion, and I recognize there is a happy community for the games, and these are "Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnought" and "Rule the Seas". Both are warship and navy building strategy games, but both are ahistorical. If you go to the Royal Navy for 1922 in "Rule the Seas", thee is no 13.5" gun, the ships listed and their designs have no relationship to historical accuracy, while in "Dreadnoughts", there is no consideration of volume demands of the various options, especially armaments. If you can find deck space, to can drop a mount or turret there without consideration of any below decks requirements. The armaments, power plants, electronics and such are also generic and often not relevant to the period you are building the ship in. I understand the complexities of such attempts and the need to rationalize the database across many periods and navies, but "Rule the Sea" uses a text database which could have easily included the historically accurate guns such as 13.5" and a separate 15" gun for the RN, rather than using the German WW1 38cm gun for all navies.
Finally there is "Harpoon" in all its variants and glory. I have the Gold Edition and final dot version of "Harpoon for PC" and "Harpoon II". While "Command" is an up to date database and a much friendlier interface, the designers decided to lock out players from the database which I can understand given how anarchic the Harpoon" databases within the community became. But still, the database editor allows you to add weapons, electronics and platforms the original designers weren't interested in or had the resources to build. My favorite is a 1963 mod of USS Kentucky and Illinois with three vertical reload Talos launchers on their main gun barbettes and two Tarter Mk.11 launchers on each corner where the secondary battery was. There were three 5" Mk.42 mounts on each beam. That was just to start.
I have a number of other sims like "War at Sea", "Ultimate Admiral:Age of Sail", the different "Ironclads" games, "U-boote", "688", "Cold Waters", the "Silent Hunter" series, "Fleet Command" (which has an excellent third party editor), "Carriers and Battleships", "Carriers at War", "Carrier Battles" and such.
Still given the wide availability of 3-D views of warships available in the resources, I wonder if you couldn't build an actual 3-D model in a CADD program and print it in a 3-D printer?

I love to see how far you’ve come, from double digit, only an hour long Drydocks, to having sponsors and… dear god 6 hour ones is amazing. I guess trying to break them into parts didn’t work out, eh? Hahaha

I have a fair bit of GHQ 1/2400 scale ships but I think this looks great and is just what I am looking for.
    1/1800 it is!

I hope the single color paint jobs also make the minis easier to identify because otherwise we wasted quite a bit of effort on dazzle camo schemes.

Ask Mr. Draco if he wants video of us playing Vat Sea in 1 700 scale out on the Battle Deck. We have fought some twenty battles to date including the battle of Conviy PQ18. The orig publisher had ship data for every ship conceivable.

what about the old wizards game axis and allies war at sea? I have a large collection of ships and my brother uses the models for victory at sea. same size however with out the named base. does challenge you to identify a ship just by the look.

Seeing a batrep by you would be fantastic! I've been cautiously looking at this one (I prefer the ww1 and earlier stuff purely aesthetically), and our experience with Black Seas was a mixed thing ... But would love to learn more about VaS.

One thing that came to mind regarding these miniatures... you mentioned several times that games and movies show ships/planes way too close to each other for cinematic purposes and real life battle ranges were very different. With these things, you could do a visual demonstration of that, for example Bismarck vs Hood - that'd be around 8 metres or thereabouts for the fatal salvo. You could set down the two ships at the approximate range on some smooth surface like an indoor football court and zoom out with a high definition camera from one (maybe with a drone) until both ships (or at least their positions...) are in view. And then edit some markers onto them. Maybe record from various perspectives, from up above to the view down from the ship. It's worth a try at least, I think.

I would say that beginners might struggle removing the metal bits from their sprues as they have a hefty vent tab especially on the larger ships.

    • @rollingthunder55
      @rollingthunder55 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

yeah you really do need a set of nippers for those sprues. You won't get the supper structure or turrets off Yamato or Missouri without them.

I would personally LOVE it if each of Warlord's games got to the point where they could branch out into additional periods. I'd love to see 17th century Black Seas or even earlier (as well as up to the 1850s and maybe even 1860s), WW1 and Tsushima in Victory At Sea, and even ww1 and other coastal combat covered in Cruel Seas, even if that is quite the long shot.

Very fun little game, the minis are great and it's not particularly complicated so I even got some people not that into naval history to play. Some things are a little bit unbalanced (Japanese torpedoes within about 17 inches will obliterate everything, and USN 14 inch armed standard battleships roll as many damage dice overall as Yamato (36 dice), while Kongos get under half as many(16 dice)) but it's still fun. Currently got a decent IJN, USN, RN and KM collection, wanted to get into the RM and MR fleets but haven't had much time or space to recently.

Thank you for your opinion on the accuracy/detail on the models. My gaming store in Las Vegas is working with warlord and I ordered a bunch of famous ships [to sell mainly as easy build/paint models for the vets in the mall we are in]. I was worried when I realized the scale was so tiny [like the Flames of war 1/72 scale tanks my partner ordered that were rubbish for detail]. But if you say a ship fan could actually identify variants on sister ship models without reading the base, I am sold.
What do you think of Cruel Seas as models? Trying to assemble the british boats was maddening since they didn't have locator holes for the fore guns and masts and only isometric glamor shots, no top-down "part X goes here" pics in the instructions.

Been reading through Fletcher Pratt's Naval Wargame rules, though I haven't gone so far as to get miniatures. He was very much against introducing randomness in his rules, so I'd be curious to see how a set of rules with randomness plays out.

Very interesting. I always wanted to try a "naval" WW2 boardgame. This game seems intriguing.
1:1800 scale? As a kid in the 1970's I got a small 1-piece model of a battleship. It turned out to be a 1:1800 model of Yamato.

    • @UNC_Samurai

Most WW2 naval miniature gaming has traditionally been done at 1:2400 and 1:3000 scale. But when Wizards of the Coast was looking for something to do with the Avalon Hill label during the cheap pre-painted miniature era of the mid-2000s, they produced a series of collectible miniature games under the Axis & Allies title. Their ships were 1:1800, which was completely new scale outside of the occasional odd Japanese toy. The line proved so successful, Mongoose Publishing created Victory at Sea. The rules were originally size-agnostic, but were optimal for using your Axis & Allies minis with a slightly more sophisticated set of rules. Eventually Mongoose sold the system to Warlord, and Warlord embraced the 1:1800 scale.

Re-enacting as opposed to re-fighting? ... I adjudicated a naval wargame of the battle of the River Plate, all 4 ships involved (Graf Spee, Exeter, Ajax and Achilles) were sunk it can be quite an eye-opener to see that historical events are not the guaranteed result. Have fun. Those are lovely models! I use 1/4800th scale myself.
