I've always said even if you don't like BTS music I don't know how anyone can deny their incredible stage presence. Their first tour after they come back from the military is going to be huge. And I think live singing contributes a lot to being excellent performers, if you are lip syncing the performance becomes very robotic. If you are a singer, I think you should sing. Using backing vocals is okay because sometimes you do need to catch your breath especially when dancing, but I can't stand singers who 100 percent lip sync.

Jungkook's stage presence is spellbinding. He entertains everyone with remarkable panache. His agility, mobility and dedication to his craft whenever he steps on stage is like no other. I've been watching bts perform for 6 years now, and after all these years now I understand why he's the centre. He's not an eccentric or different from any other performer, he is simply eminently keen to perform. He is aggressive, unrelenting and of course very ardent on stage. He has been my ultimate crush for 5 years and he still makes my heart beat like a drum to this day, and that's the same reason why he's such a sterling performer, he always puts the same amount of energy, enthusiasm and work in his performances. He never slacks off, he's consistent. The man is an institution

    My conclusions:
    - Jungkook can step on me as much as he fcking wants I’M NOT A SIMP THO, GEEZ.
    - You can feel BTS have fun on stage, like, that’s what others should be trying to replicate instead of their success but you didn’t heard that from me 😗
    - I hate, despise, dislike how idols can’t have fun anymore on stage when it comes to an encore, like, flex them vocals too if you want BUT HAVE FUN I BEG, STOP CARING SO MUCH, YOU GOT AN AWARD AND WILL GET PAID BUT COMMENTS SCARE YOU??? NAAAAAAHHHHH GO GET BITCHES
    - I, like a lot of people, agree that minors shouldn’t debut so soon BUT Eunchae’s stage presence is just getting better, NWJNS too, I love the way they interact in “Ditto” performances, it makes me happy

I was really sad I didn’t get the tickets for the online concert for the 1st day but I was overjoyed that I instead got D2 when he pulled up with this stellar performance. Watching him brought me to tears, he’s so passionate about what he does and I pray to whatever god there is that he will one day perform My Time in front of a live crowd in person because I would give anything to watch it. I had tickets for the MOTS tour before Covid and have been praying they bring the set list for it back because those solos and sub unit songs were some of their best. I saw them back in 2019 and Hobi took me away with Just Dance, you see him in videos and people talk about just how good of a performer he is but nothing compares to seeing him live. He really was born to be on stage, his energy is infectious and he really blew me away. With Tae I’m very biased (clearly) but gosh him in person is so unreal. You watch his fan cams and his expressions are so on point. Wether he’s center or in the back he’s always on. Of course everyone in BTS are incredibly talented on stage and you can tell their group chemistry off the stage has helped them immensely, they blend so well together. Also something KNETZ always mention is that Chaewon has a beautiful "dance line" which is like the way she positions her body and just the way she looks while dancing. 2 people can do the same choreo but look totally different in how they execute it. Chaewon always captures the mood with her body well. Plus she's able to adapt to any concept. She's done cutesy and elegant in IZONE, she's also covered quirky dances like in Catallena, and now she's doing fierce cool concepts in LE SSERAFIM.

Jeon freaking Jungkook! The dude is a beast on stage. His commitment to live singing really makes my respct for him increase every single stage. I had fully expected him to lipsync half the song or have heavy backing track for the Dreamers stage. Its a huge event and its would have been understandable if he did. But Nah! He sang his heart out even if that meant 1/2 minor mistakes. (Also, he learnt that choreo with hours to spare! Kudos to him!)
He may not be "technically" considered among the top vocalists of kpop but he will ALWAYS execute a BTS/JK song to utter perfection.
my favourite thing about him though is that he never turns off. When its not his singing part, he's still giving his 100% (interacting with crowd, throwing in adlibs, executing every step like textbook) but without overshadowing the member whose part it is. That's what makes him one of THE best centers kpop has ever had imo.
(him and Jhope elevate every song by atleast 15% just with their adlibs. Goes to show how Present(pun intended) they are on stage at every moment)
Every BTS member is amazing on stage but BigHit really hit Jackpot with that 13 yr old boy who thought RunchRanda was super cool😎

Even when their condition wasn't the best, or they seemed tired, or it's raining and windy, or they already performed for 20 minutes straight and they're literally dripping sweat, or it was a small unglamorous stage with an audience of non-fans... every single time it's 100% and I think that's one of the biggest reasons they have the level of success they do (along with quality music, talent, personality etc.)

I think there's a difference between group stage presence and a single idol's stage presence. Groups like Seventeen, BTS, Ateez etc. have great group stage presence (regardless of which member charisma, if any, or has the best stage presence) while some other groups like Exo, GIDLE, Txt where one member stands out in performances because of their overwhelming stage presence in comparison to the other members. Also, I strongly believe that confidence (+ concept of the comeback) matters a lot with the majority of idols. If you're not confident in dancing for example, then you're gonna be blanking out in the face and maybe not thinking about your artistic expression. Meanwhile, if your more confident in your abilities, your more focused on making a show therefore you may be exuding better stage awareness and stage presence. (my first point is mostly informed by everglow up lol).

People literally forget that yujin is an IZ*ONE member that also had a hard choreos. I'd still remember when all the gg rookies had a collab at MAMA 2022, all the other fandoms started to talk shit IVE, saying things like "how IVE members is going to dance O.O, fearless, hype boy, and wadada? they're such a weak performer", "they can't dance a hardcore choreo cause they will break their bones, especially wonyoung". BTS is so absolutely not overhated. They just have more fans (number-wise) so even if they only have like 0.5% the number of haters that's still a lot of people. Same with toxic fans, a small percentage of a huge number is still a pretty large absolute number, especially when there are a lot of young and reactionary fans. It also doesn't help that if you don't stan them you might just be annoyed by the constant presence of enthusiastic Armys in every corner of every kpop space. All this goes for Blinks too, the big fandoms = magnification of everything else. If like, Fromis_9 blew up to that degree they'd have the same issue, but it wouldn't mean overhating; Ive is a good example of *actual* overhating.

Live vocals become more valuable to me when evaluating stage presence partially because of its rareness in the industry but largely because the raw emotion and energy that can only be conveyed through live vocalization helps me connect to the artist and elevates the performance that much more. These people CAN sing, they just don't for various reasons which ARE valid but just unfortunate and I wish live vocals can come back.
Chaewon never fails to steal my attention when I go into a performance with the intention to look out for another member. She has proved her versatility and she's a fantastic performer! I absolutely agree with all of your points and examples (most of them are known for dancing and I concur that dancers oftentimes know how to contort their bodies to draw the audience's attention which is why it may play such a large role, but it is not a defining trait as there are idols who can't dance as well but maintain phenomenal stage presence).

SEVENTEEN consistently surprise me with their performances. They always give it their all, and are always energetic and fun to watch with each song and performance. To me, stage presence is all about whom I enjoy the most whilst performing. And SEVENTEEN might be the only group (for me) wherein I have fun watching each member. You have such versatility in that group. From hard hitting energetic performances coming from Hoshi, Dino, S.Coups and DK; to having graceful and smooth dancers like The8, Jun, Jeonghan, Woozi and Seungkhwan. Facial expressions and crowd-work are also extremely important, and to me Mingyu and Vernon are best at it. Joshua and Wonwoo have more reserved stage presence, but their movements are always sharp and on point making it fun to watch. I do have my favourites in the group, but overall they're a team that has never let me down when it comes to performances and vocals. My favourite being BSS at the Circle chart awards. Their energy, the creativity of the stage, the live vocals, the interaction, the crowd-work, the set and even the dancing. It was all perfect. Overall, I think (IMO) SEVENTEEN are some of the best performers in Kpop.
EDIT: If anyone has not seen SEVENTEEN's dance practice for 'Super' then please do watch it because it will blow your little mind into a million pieces. It is one of the best mega-crew kpop group performances I have seen in a long time. I remember when they released Don Quioxte and people were mad because the dancers weren't as in-synch with the members, and now there are like 30-50 fucking people all in synch dancing in a basketball court it is insane. My favorite kpop performers:
Yujin (IVE): she is my bias wrecker, She has alot of energy and dancing skills. This girl knows how to move her arms with the music while she sings.
Jungkook (BTS): He is the best relationship to the stage. Jungkook has the most amazing voice and he's facial expressions are so good. He's also a good dancer. Jungkook used his voice in live performances in the debut in the US he was amazing in live singing. I didn't see alot of Dance practice videos for BTS but I will this summer. Jungkook is a male siren he is the GOAT in BTS. Did i mention he's my bias?
Woozi (Seventeen): Woozi is the shortest member of the group but I don't care I love his voice. He's adorable and he love to sing and dance and it shows. I'm not a fan of Seventeen but I'm not denying the stage presence of this group. Woozi's voice is so beautiful not as good as Jungkook but i like it. He has a solo debut song called Ruby and it's in English. It's big booty bop! Woozi is my bias in Seventeen because of this song.
Hyunbin (Tri•be): Hyunbin is from one of the most underrated kpop groups is my bias. I love her facial expressions and her voice is top notch she's also a rapper so she's an amazing rapper and a great dancer. When she raps its electrified the performances. Tri•be is similar to red velvet they do girl crush in Doom Doom ta and They sometimes do cute like the buh buh song. Its also theme song of We baby bears. Hyunbin has a plethora of hair colors i can't remember them but the hairstyles and colors she has made her stage presence even better. But it also damages her hair.
Lisa (Blackpink): Lisa is my ultimate bias. She is one of the four all rounders in the group. Lisa is the Queen of Stage Presence in my opinion, Lisa is the dance prodigy she was dancing as she was little. Her facial expressions are the best and her dancing rivals any main dancer. Being a woman from Thailand isn't easy because racism, but it's not bring her down. She even has a hidden talent of memorizing other dances. She's also the lead rapper her raps are the best. Someone must have taught her how to rap. Lisa is good at singing too especially on live. Her live vocals are amazing.
Psy (soloist): He is the man that made me loved Kpop. He is the dance king with his song Gangnam style Psy made everyone dance he also showed his over the top facial expressions and rapping. He command the stage like it's nothing. He is the GOAT in Kpop.
HyunA (Soloist): HyunA is the Lady Gaga of Kpop because she dresses werid like Lady Gaga but they both used their werid fashion sense to elevate their stage presence. HyunA is a dancer, rapper, and singer. She was a member of 4mintue and Wonder girls. Her dancing unlike any other. Her style of dance is not for everyone but I love it and her voice is honey to my ears. She's a souceress of the stage and lives to perform.

I really think Jungkook is a 'crazy genius' kind of talent. Like, getting scouted by so many agencies, his future is set for him already. If he pick the most popular company at that time no one is going to question his decision. Past Bighit is basically a 'sinking ship' no matter how you look at it. It doesn't matter how talented the artists when the platform is not stable it'll be hard for anyone to stand up. BUT NO the young Jungkook still decided to gamble and choose THE sinking ship.
It was a blessing in disguise for him and the tannies but personally, I cannot imagine having THAT much confidence in myself. Even up to this day, the dude is still head over heels enamored w his 'Namjoon hyung' 😂
Edit: also, another thing to acknowledge is the attitude of the rest of the members in general. Jungkook is the youngest of the group w a 2 years gap between him and Taehyung- PLUS, Jimin and Tae used to be the unseparated twinnies/95z duo- so no wonder they baby Jungkook a lot. The overflowing support and encouragement they gave him ever since his debut really shaped him as an exceptional artist now.

    Spot on analysis.
The performance aspect of Kpop is one of the most significant factors contributing to its popularity in the global market. Look at LSF, many people became their fans after LSF just slayed every performance in the year-end music award shows. On the other hand, Jpop idol groups have not been able to gain as much popularity partly because their performance level is relatively low. When Sakura started her idol career in Korea, one of the most difficult things for her was that she had never received training at the level of Korean idol trainees in Japan
Although Chaewon had great potential during her time in IZ*ONE, I believe that she was not able to fully demonstrate her abilities due to the performance style that IZ*ONE followed. It was difficult for anyone to stand out among 12 members. I am amazed by Chaewon’s transformation, and I find it surprising that some IZ*ONE fans got upset when you mentioned it. However, given how fandoms work, I suppose it's not entirely unexpected. I believe that the concept and style of Le Sserafim have allowed Chaewon to fully realize her potential and who she really is as a performer. I still remember the first time I saw Chaewon's facial expression during the MAMA Dress Rehearsal; it made me think that she was a completely different person from her IZ*ONE days.
Moreover, I think that Kazuha currently has the highest potential among the members of Le Sserafim. Considering her limited experience and training of only about a year, I believe that she has the most room for growth among the group members.

She’s got charisma, but she can also be cute. I think moon sua could honestly just become more of a powerhouse performer further in her career.

I think one of the main reason stage presence is considered necessity in kpop bc most of these idols are not considered artist but rather performers bc they do not produce or write their own songs or even contribute to it, of course there are some exceptions but most of them just do what their agency give them so the least a fan can expect them is to sing it and perform it perfectly, as most idols stick to lip syncing these days stage presence and dancing has become the only 2 things that we can enjoy live, So we expect them to be good at it.

the basketball analogy is so true. jk fr is the gold standard of what an "all rounder" idol truly is. all rounder as a term gets thrown around and attached to idols way to much nowadays and its kinda unfair. because if you compare some of these quote unquote "all rounders" to jk it becomes so painfully clear how much of a cheat code he is as an idol. if the idol industry was truly like the nba where idols could get traded from group to group, jk would have the biggest trade value of not just bts but any idol ever. companies would genuinely disband groups just to trade for him. it would be nuts

Hybe really has the best performers right now. BTS are obviously insane on stage both as a group and individually. Even their members who aren't technically the best at dancing still shine on stage and are able to keep up with the great dancers of the group, which is a talent in itself. Imagine never having danced before and suddenly having to keep pace with Jimin and J-hope, two of the best dancers in kpop ever; RM, Jin, and Suga have all stepped up to the challenge and have created great chemistry on stage with the dance line despite their lack of dance experience. Despite what antis insist, BTS's live vocals are incredible. The vocal line shines and the rap line stuns in concert. One shitty Like Crazy encore be damned, Jimin can sing and he sings well, and I won't let anyone tell me otherwise. I've heard that man in concert, and he's got some pipes on him.
TXT as a unit are incredible performers. Yeonjun has crazy stage presence and there's a reason he was famous amongst the trainees for being great. Le Sserafim are show-stopping, spunky performers, even in their group's infancy. Chaewon and Yunjin are fucking fantastic and stand out to me the most, but all of the girls are great. I'd love to see more live vocals from them though. Seventeen are known to be great dancers and with as many members as they have, it's so impressive that they're so in tune with each other on stage. Some groups fall apart with only 4-5 members, so being that coordinated with 13 members is crazy. New Jeans have such cutesy, bubbly stages, and I they'll only improve as time goes on. For how young some of them are, what they're doing is really impressive. I don't know much about Fromis_9 or Enhypen, but I'm sure they're able to hold their own as well. But yeah, in terms of stage presence, Hybe dominates for sure.

Imo, vast majority of acts either do not get the oppurtunity, or may not have a prospective skill in having a personal artistic arc. Especially considering how in kpop, the expected release frequency is far higher than normative standard in other industries.
In the 1st and 2nd gen you barely even got to see much of the idols personality besides the variety shows they did. But even today, the only space you get to see each idols individual performative and artistic skills is on stage. Also for groups that have less artistic freedom, the stage presence becomes the atributing factor to the vibe, the concept and the message a group would like to give. Say blackpink. The instant association to women empowerment, girl power etc. came majorly from the style the girls were trained (and ofc a certain natural aura they exude). The only issue is, when a group is primarily dependent on stage presence, it is very easy to fall flat. Especially, a few consecutive errors or lack of passion. Its also easy for an idol to be boxed. Idols called pick me, fake and what not.
Besides, endeavors that can be sociopolitical can easily be judged by the public as to why a group whose messaging is framed by a company is now becoming puppets in such platforms (the public reception to aespa's UN endeavor is a good example).
Whereas, a group has freedom and the skills to write (or some groups may not be lyrically strong but make unique music like red velvet) and make a legacy for themselves; Even with no choreo, and just a simple mic, the stage just becomes one more platform for an audience to feel the true essence of the message or the concept a group stands for. Thats the nuance stage presence holds.

I've always think that Kpop idols are more "performers" than they are actual singers or dancers, I'm not saying they don't do these things at an amazing level, because they do. But the main product they sell is the performances, and the music and the choreo are just elements to that product. It's more like the sum of the parts than the parts themselves. That's why sometimes you hear a song that is just okay, but you look at the MV or at the music show performance and suddenly even the songs sounds better.

With all due respect, I believe stage presence is independent of any other performance aspects such as dancing, singing, etc. This why Kpop stans nowadays are so messy when describing the "stage presence" of their bias and their anti-bias.
Stage presence of an individual is the quality and manner by which one demands attention from audiences and manifest authority on the stage, regardless of the exhibition. Meaning, even if one is just standing on the stage as a tableau, or sitting down while singing, or dancing throughout the whole platform, or just making a stage gag, that individual can still command stage presence because as you have said that it is inherently subjective. The moment majority of the audiences' focus are drawn with awe to what the individual is doing on stage, that is the moment where stage presence manifest its very nature.

    • @Taejiu
      @Taejiu ปีที่แล้ว +16

Yeah I can see that point of view, but my rebuttal to that would be, if an idol performing, halazia for example, was standing still on stage, making some facial expressions, would that really be considered "stage presence" in kpop? I feel like singing and dancing in kpop specifically add to this, which is why I distinguished what it was to open the video.
I believe stage presence in kpop specifically is a culmination of everything, because if you remove the dancing and singing, you get someone awkwardly winking standing on stage, and is that really what stage presence is? I guess it's up to the person to decide.

    • @raynxxiaqoh2833
      @raynxxiaqoh2833 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@Taejiu As I've mentioned above, the moment majority of the audiences' attention were drawn "with awe", regardless of performance, stage presence is being exhibited. So in the case you presented, it would be a "yes" if attention is commanded and instill awe.
You see, ai believe many of kpop stan is missing the point that stage presence is independent of idol skills. For example, a new Kpop stan without even knowing about BIGBANG, would immediately know who amongst the five have best stage presence 3 seconds from when they enter the stage without them dancing or singing, just standing or walking. I hope you get what I mean.
But of course, I also get what you are saying, and for so long now. More and more stans are starting to mix stage presence with the outstanding skills of idols. And therefore the quality of stage presence will be diluted with how good the skillset of the idols possess because that is what the majority believes and stage presence is "inherently subjective".

    • @bunmiabimbola4426
      @bunmiabimbola4426 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I'm also of the opinions that singing and dancing doesn't equate to great stage presence. I think they help the performance but they aren't major the reasons why they are great even in kpop. In my opinion; persona, aura and facial expressions that determine great stage presence.
You gave halazia as an example. We can all agree that halazia has a great choreography and the live singing really added to it but the performance wasn't fantastic because of only these. All Ateez member took up a character to portray for the song to really come alive. Wooyoung had the best dance execution but Seonghwa had the best stage presence for that era, Yeosang also brought out an aggression we have never seen from him. Their singing and dancing could only take them so far. They're desperation, hopefulnessand almost numbness was seen through their facial expressions and auras. Halazia dance structure also going against how Ateez dances with them focusing more on uniformity and synchronisation then before and without their individual personas the performance could have fallen flat due to it's difference in dance structure.
The stage presence was in the little things, change of emotional in their eyes, faces. Seonghwa for example had a 2 conflicting emotions happening during different parts of the dance. He would go from strong general and god like being to an emotional wreck by the time Jongho's chorus kicked it, making the audience feel like he was lying when he was front and center. I could really feel the pain in his eyes as the song progressed. The other members also had something to tell ( individual pov) even when the dance says something else. This really brought to live what song was trying to say.
Idols can have good stage presence without or with live sing or dancing ability. Like the commenter said 3seconds into a big bang performance can tell all that needs to said. That being said we should expect that idols than can dance well are not the best performance always, we're kinda of blindsiding ourselves by thinking this. Great dancer or singer =\= Great performer.
To the halazia question; Ateez performing halazia with all this emotions they put in their on stages while they're only singing is a bad idea. I don't even think they would performance it like that while singing. They're experienced performers and I think they would express the song like a singer and not a performer when the stage requires it.
Halazia is also a song that was produced for a performance and they know that.
Taejiu, thanks for the stage presence video. It was nice see you list of performance. Sorry for the long response and if I sound contradictory. 😁

I feel like people nowadays mistake facial expressions as stage presence, I mean yeah, it could be part of it, but stage presence is just something certain idols have with or without excessive facial expressions. Really good examples are CL and Hyuna, like both of these queens can just stand there, raise an eyebrow and have people screaming and frothing at the mouth. An idol that is able to pull people's undivided attention without really doing too much, for me, shows how great of a stage presence they have. Another great example of this would be Hwasa who just really pulls you in, even when you just see her silhouette before her performance starts
