    Wow, these dogs truly are just so so smart. Plus I do think they are a chip off the solid block you've raised them against. You are amazing with these dogs. Thank you again for all you help in answering questions and taking the time to care in general the way you do.

    I agree 100% ... you just have to have an alternative place inside the house for them to use the bathroom. Weather is a definite factor, such as if it's storming. Do you mind me asking if Oringo does hike his leg when he goes out side?

      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, Oringo usually lifts the leg outside, against a vertical object, but when its flat he squats 😊

    I noticed the potty box, I assume it's a potty box, and I was wondering if it is indeed, I can see how Makena would be squatting to pee in it, but a male hikes it's leg, so how would Oringo pee in it? Thank you so much hun - XO

      yes thats a potty box! you only really need it for puppies until about 6 months old. and males generally start lifting their leg way after that. now that my dogs are adults, the potty box is just a convenience for rainy days when they dont want to get wet, and gets used very rarely. Oringo can still squat to pee, if he goes to the potty tray.

    Are both the dogs spayed and neutered? The reason I wondered is because I wanted to know if it's easier to train dogs that have been fixed so to speak, or if it is still just as easy to train dogs that have not been fixed, especially a male that is still in tact.

      yes, they are both desexed. I don't know if intact basenjis are more difficult to train... there is a general belief that desexed dogs are calmer, so that would probably affect their trainability...

    Very informative. A great idea to start with a big enclosure and then add a crate inside it or on its own. Do you put a potty tray inside the enclosure? Also, did you start enclosure or crate training from day one when they were still young puppies?

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you Mark! yes we have a potty tray in the enclosure, even now when they are adults, for those rainy days when they wouldn't go outside 😄 we started enclosure and crate training from day one, in fact their breeders also did that from very young age so we were lucky they came to us already preped and we just continued. we put crate in the enclosure but didnt close the crate door until much later, probably 2 months later, when they already felt comfortable being in it. then we started closing the crate door for short periods and gradually increasing.

    Is that cat litter between their cages at the end of the video?

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes thats right! they were trained to use cat litter when they were puppies, and we still keep it for those occasions when its too cold/rain to go outside, or for very rare occasions when they have an upset tummy for some reason and need to go at night.

    So having a pen instead of a crate is better? And I have school and was worried about my basenji not being able to use the restroom if i use potty training pads would he still be able to use the restroom outside?

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! both playpen and crate training are crucial in my view, and both have its own use. I find that dogs adjust quicker and easier to playpen because its less restrictive, so you can start with playpen while you slowly introduce the dog to a crate. when you dont have time to do crate training properly, it can result in a negative experience and too much stress for the dog. So starting with a playpen is a much softer transition for the dog.
      I used a litter box instead of puppy pads inside, its just so much cleaner. But in any case, it shouldn't normally stop the dog to still go outside for toilet. Dogs naturally prefer grass or bark outside, so you would use an inside toilet only when you can't take them outside. So its not like you only use pads, and suddenly at 6 months expect the dog to only go outside. You use both otions from day one. As they can hold their bladder for longer, you remove the inside option so they are only left with the outside option.

      @@oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 ahh okay thank you and are you able to make more training videos for basenji like a guide since they are so stubborn?

    basenji puppy can jump very high

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats right! thats why our enclosure is 90cm high and has no horizontal bars to climb on. but with successful enclosure training the dog doesnt even try to escape
