2. Material: Opt for a sturdy and durable material for the nest box, such as untreated wood or plywood. Make sure the wood is free from any chemicals or toxins that could harm your birds.
3. Entrance Hole: The entrance hole should be just large enough to allow the conures to enter and exit comfortably. The diameter of the entrance hole typically ranges from 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm), depending on the size of your conures.
4. Internal Surface: Line the inside of the nest box with soft nesting material, such as shredded paper, wood shavings, or untreated nesting material specifically designed for birds. This will provide insulation and comfort for the nesting pair and their chicks.
5. Mounting: Securely mount the nest box in a quiet and secluded area of the cage or aviary, preferably at least 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 meters) above the ground. Ensure that the nest box is stable and does not sway or wobble, as this could disturb the nesting birds.
6. Accessibility: Provide easy access to the nest box for monitoring and cleaning purposes. Some nest boxes feature a removable lid or side panel for convenient access.
7. Temperature and Humidity: Maintain a stable temperature and humidity level in the nesting area to create an optimal environment for breeding. Avoid placing the nest box near drafty areas or direct sunlight, as this can affect the temperature inside the box.
8. Monitoring: Keep a close eye on the nesting pair to ensure they are behaving normally and that the eggs or chicks are healthy. Avoid disturbing the birds unnecessarily, especially during the breeding and nesting period.
By considering these factors and providing a well-designed nest box, you can create a comfortable and safe nesting environment for your conures to breed and raise their offspring.
