MAGICAL FAIRY DUST - TIMING - ACCUMULATION - ENSONIQ DP4 - S770 - USAMO

  • I've made a few videos about the Roland S770 and thought the channel needed one which shows the accumulative effect of multiple audio sources output from the S770. To add to that I demo how well the S770 works with an Ensoniq DP4 and also demo the overall timing of midi sent to the S770 from the USAMO sample accurate audio to midi converter. All audio/music sources is live from the S770.
    The point is to reveal how this stuff matches up in a real-world situation.

    Chris--I can't describe HOW HAPPY I am to see your new production techniques page! Not only that, but you seem to be posting new content fairly regularly which is fantastic. Just the other day I was trying to figure out the best way to get stable clock between the computer and a piece of hardware....and BAM here it is!! I've been making my way through all your vids and I don't think I've ever been this happy to watch production technique videos. So many thanks for taking the time to do these. There are people like myself out there that respect your work and your process immensely. To take an educational look into that process makes me appreciate your music even more. Take care and keep it up brother!

      Thanks Matt.
      If the channel grows I will put in more effort.
      For now its a bit random with uploads depending on what I'm doing in the real world.
      My general approach is to not babysit viewers What I'm doing is kind of what producers do when making records and I suppose behind the scenes fo what the viewer is seeing might be quite advanced??.
      I will do videos that go into explaining what I'm doing and why X plugin or hardware is great but that's not the ultimate aim of the channel. I think newcomers into the game can drown in all that stuff.

      BTW I fully recommend the Expert Sleepers USAMO. Im only using one, sending midid to multiple exterenal boxes with minimal issues. I will pick up one more to split the load between two USAMO's

    • @r0tekz
      @r0tekz 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MOOTANT1 If you combine Expert Sleepers modules ES-40 and ESX-8MD in a small enclosure, you get 8 individual MIDI ports out from one SPDIF. Perhaps more cost-effective than multiple Usamo's, depending on how many ports you need. Make sure the enclosure is deep enough! It is easy to get one too shallow, as my supplier found out, twice.

  • @juno6
    @juno6 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    One thing to note about usamo, is that as accurate as it is, midi still is a serial interface, so the sample accurate thing is only when sending only one event at a time (like midi clock). From the moment you send two or more events at the same time, it´s not sample accurate anymore (only the first note!). Each note on event is approx 0.9 ms, so 10 notes simultaneously gives you almost 10 ms of jitter. Usamo still is the best option though. One good way to check midi timing is recording some fast notes on a hihat or some short percussive sound, and see how aligned to the grid is. That´s a more "scientific" approach. I don`t have a 770, but I have a DJ-70 which I bought for literally 30 dollars, and I wanted to see how good the timing was. I´ll do some tests, as I also have an usamo. Cheers and thanx for the video.

    I'm crawling all your vids now since I discovered you use the DP4 :) I really think the DP4 needs to be recreated in a next-gen unit. Last year I emailed Jon Dattorro, the genius behind the ESP2 DSP architecture, asking if he'd considered partnering with some modern music manufacturer to recreate it. He did say he'd be open to the idea but unless a modern manufacturer approaches him it won't happen. Others who love its unique capabilities need to put the idea out there to modern gear manufacturers.

    Great vid. Timed my S1000 and Notator SL down to 2 samples max jitter when playing back a single track. Was surprised to see how tight it was. Funny I read reports the S7 series had some timing issues but doesn't look like it here. Interesting about the Quadraverb, just got one and really like it, but that's true some combos just work naturally.

      They do come up from time to time. There's also the DP4+. It has better headroom. Only thing I recall was the delays were brighter, higher quality. Could be good, maybe not. Only used one for an hour or so over 20 years ago. They are the same machine, but the + was created as a slightly improved version including new FX algos....but maybe the lower quality is better for alt tastes?

    Awesome video. I'm curious if you remember which DP4 preset did you used? IMO the reason it blends so well and not in your face is because it is 32k engine. If you like it, you will also like DRP-20 (blackface) which is also 32k and can do some VERY impressive reverbs. There are some other sleepers like DPS-R7 from Sony (Biosphere - Substrata is all R7 + S3000 internal FX). And more...but comment section is too small...

      HI Don, I'm familiar with you via the GS forum.
      I don't really use a particular preset. I set my DP4 up as a 4U effect so I just flick through verbs and delays. I think you're right about why the verbs and delays blends in. I have plenty of virtual FX but can't seem to find one I like over the DP4's efforts. Thanks for the tip on those other FX boxes - Ill check them out.

    Thanks for the great vid, very nice sounds! I was wondering, do you use two separate fx chains to the DP/4 for the delay and reverb here? Or are the fx combined in one preset?

    • @MOOTANT1
      @MOOTANT1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Separate (parallel mode). I've always used the DP4 as if it were 4 separate FX boxes. I started off using it that way and continued bcz it was the only FX box I wanted to use (I had others) and did so on hundreds of records. Probably missed out on some great FX chains but as a 4 unit parallel FX box it has always worked great for me. If I were to use it in serial I would likely use it as 2 unit serial and no doubt as a one unit FX box some fantastic FX chains would happen.

    • @cmroosen
      @cmroosen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MOOTANT1 Thanks for the detailed reply! I am assuming you are using a hall reverb and one of the delay algorithms here? Did you have to tweak a lot to get this preset or do they sound good straight out the box? About to purchase a DP4 tonight, partly because of your videos :-)

    • @MOOTANT1
      @MOOTANT1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@cmroosen Yes, I think it was a hall reverb. I usually set up two verbs ( a short and long one), a dual delay and a tempo delay which is more like a mono delay. But keep in mind that was my standard setup because the DP4 was the only FX box I used on many records. The need for a 4 aux send system (4 FX) sort of prevented me using other FX algos and configurations. Now with access to a lot more FX via plugins I'm able to experiment more with the DP4 and many of the other algos are really good such as the chorus and distortions. Even stuff like its compressor whilst brutal is interesting as is the EQ and filter. So def experiment, don't just use it in the way I had to use it.
      I never had to tweak much and once I had 4 FX I was happy with I pretty much used the same ones all the time and just tweaked a little to suit the song I was working on. When you turn it off and on it returns to the exact same state.
      Don't expect shiny glittery FX sound like we get with plugins. The Dp4 blends with the sound - it doesn't sit on top of the sound and doesn't get lost in the mix like some other FX and plugins I have used. It's a very musical FX unit imo.
      Good luck, have fun :)
