    MISTAKE: I accidentally say 傀異化 (anomoly) is kokuika but as you can tell from the Risen term, it should be KAIIKA. Sorry!

    I've actually compiled a list of non-subspecies Subspecies.
    Confirmed or implied in-game:
    Black Diablos (female in heat)
    Ashen Lao Shan Lung (volcanic ash)
    Baleful Gigginox (mutation)
    Goldbeard Ceadeus (old individual)
    Confirmed in ancillary material:
    Emerald Congalala (old male, dyed fur)
    Plum D. Hermitaur (poor diet)
    Terra S. Ceanataur (very good diet)
    Black Gravios (subject to great heat)
    Abyssal Lagiacrus (old Lagiacrus/Ivory)
    Implied but unconfirmed:
    Red Khezu (non-albino variant?)
    Shah Dalamadur (after molting?)
    Possibly result of a mistake:
    Pyre Rakna Kadahki (separate genus)

      I'll give a bit of minor elaboration on a few of these
      Black Diablos and Baleful Gigginox are outright confirmed to not be Subspecies by their in-game descriptions. The latter is believed to be the result of a mutation, explaining its relative rarity.
      Ashen Lao Shan Lung's description discusses how the colouration of a Lao Shan Lung depends on the environment it grew up in, while Goldbeard's says its relationship with the regular variant isn't clear. Both are all but confirmed to not be subspecies in ancillary material.
      Emerald Congalala is actually grey. You can even tell this by the beard, which is still grey
      Black Gravios's skeleton is also discoloured.
      Abyssal Lagiacrus is a mature variant of both subspecies of Lagiacrus (I infer that the regular version is the so-called nominate subspecies, aka. the one identified first). The booklet for the Ivory Lagiacrus statue explains that the two populations diverged only very recently, so them becoming nigh indistinguishable when fully mature isn't too surprising.
      Pyre Rakna Kadaki's juvenile variant, the Pyrantula, is classified separately within the Sunbreak phylogenetic tree from Rakna Kadahki and the Raknoids (Pyre Rakna Kadaki is not listed, but it's the same animal). It is the only subspecies featured in the phylogenetic tree, and as a separate genus from Rakna Kadaki no less, which would mean that it's a very similar looking but genetically entirely distinct relative.
      Assumedly, the way the Guild would have determined this in-universe is by seeing if the two Kadakis are interfertile: subspecies can produce fertile offspring with eachother (males may be sterile however), while most related species and genera cannot (canids are a notable exception).

    for how diverse the subspecies category can be, all you have to do is look at broccoli and kale. They are both derived from the same plant. Actually, just look up Brassica Oleraceae and all it's subspecies. It's like the dog of plants, it's crazy.

    Deviants and Risen are my favorites in terms of end game content, but in terms of the actual monsters and the lore behind them then it's probably Rare species (since there hasn't been a single one I've disliked out of that group so far), and most if not all of their fights have been great too.

    No disrespect to the very busy localizers at capcom, but hearing what gaijinhunter translates the japanese names to made me come up with my own names for the special variants in rise. Apex > Raid Leader, Afflicted > Enthralled (kind of fits the story where they assumed initially that the affliction came from Malzeno, the "vampire" dragon). Risen is a pretty good term, but if I had to change it I would call them Unshackled Elder Dragons. The Qurio can't control them anymore.

    This feels like a relevant question.
    In the context of Monster Hunter, how is an entire species referred to in Japan, with Entire Species referring to the the Base Species and all subspecies/variants/rare species that belong to that Entire Species.
    This is at least a problem in English as referring to the Base Species as the Base Species is easy but referring to the species as whole is always a little odd.
    Personally at least for the English names I think giving Base Species a subspecies adjective would be easy and additionally make the setting/world of Monster Hunter feel more developed(as in enhancing how developed it feels, I am not suggesting it isn't developed).
    Sorry if this has was bothersome, this will be the last time I post this question in case it is.

    • @gaijinhunter
      @gaijinhunter  วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      It is actually the same name. Like you can say that "All Rathalos (the species) will eat this and that" and that technically refers to Rathalos and Azure Rathalos, etc. I agree, to keep it more precise, having a term to denote when talking about the species or the "base species" might be nice, but I also haven't really seen any need/places that an entire monsters species (including the subspecies and variants) are being talked about collectively. ^^

    The Apex Monsters of Rise are not just a little similar to the Deviants. They are all as similar as capcom could make them without putting in alot of extra work in. And they dont just look similar. they also get similar upgrades. I dont think its a coincidence that only Monsters with Deviant versions are the ones that also got an Apex version. And it all makes sense when you think about how both Deviants and Apex Monsters are created when they overcome death.

    @GreyKyanos วันที่ผ่านมา

    on the topic of deviants if i remember correctly the stated reason for deviants is not strictly environmental, it's the fact that they have had hunters come after them and started adapting to specifically hunt hunters. this coupled with a way to identify these specific ones resulted in the guild giving them special names to differentiate them from standard ones. this is also why it required a permit to hunt them, because the fear was not for the safety of the hunters but because they were afraid of how the dragons will mutate further if they are fed even more hunters considering what has already apparently happened.

  • @tigerdactyl6958

    Personally, I would still classify the risen monsters as power up monsters and not a new species. Also the rise apex monsters as baby/pre-evolution deviants because of their movesets and similar appearances.
    Also primordial melzeno and red khezu are technically the original monster and malzeno and khezu would be the subspecies/variants.

    correction on gore magala for gaijin. it does in fact have eyes. the eyes are normally covered and only really visible in its enrage state (with horns up), but it apparently is fully capable of sight at all times as flashes work on it at all times.
    as further evidence, the shagalu magara which is just the adult version of gore constantly has its horns up and the eyes are therefore visible.

      @thegloriouskingkronk8422 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In Monster Hunter, the majority of Subspecies genuinely are subspecies.
      The only one that could be considered a "shiny" is Baleful Gigginox, since similar to how shinies are just Pokemon born with a different colouration, the Baleful Gigginox's yellow-and-purple colouration is owed to a mutation.

    apex / rampage, arch/tempered, deviant, infected (magala) and infected (qurio) are all very similar creatures that have been tempered by surviving really stupid battles. tempered and deviant stand so do specifically because of hunters, while the other three are due to (specifically) elder dragons driving the creature insane... and all three of the latter create a special subtyping of dragons that adapted to the berserker stuff they were infected by causing them to physically mutate.
    honestly i am hopeful capcom will put more emphasis on these battle mutants as it creates an easy variation and buff to fights. also would have them create a better distinction between frenzy and qurio because as is there isn't much of any.
    as to rampage the only actual difference from the other two is that the dragons are brainwashed to go to the nesting location (the old city) before each other to the death and are largely mindless in that pursuit... so basically all three are the same but rampage aims the destruction first.

    I'm at 5:50, but I got a question. When you say the rare species are almost as powerful as elder dragons, what are we comparing its power on? Do we scale a monster's general power off of their survivability amongst other monsters, or do we scale a monster's power off of their natural destructiveness in a living ecosystem or environment?

  • @GreyKyanos
    @GreyKyanos วันที่ผ่านมา

    as to elder dragons... the guild doesn't try to prevent people from hunting them so permitting creatures that are "nearly as strong" does not make sense. while the guild advises that you run if you encounter an elder, they don't in any way try to control the issue. only individual members of the guild do.
    further the guild collects information on all dragons but consistently purges information on elder dragons to the point they become figures of myth and legend only.
    why? who knows. could be them trying to prevent people from going after them to protect the people.
    or it could be because they worship them. because the qualifications to be an elder dragon is two simple ones. first it must defy the existing categorization in some way. second is it must alter the environment it lives in. for example the kirin causing frequent lightning storms in its territory. or kushala daora causing windstorms and tornadoes.
