My late dad took me as a kid in short pants to see this picture on Saturday evening,. Dad would buy me a bag of toffee and a chock ice at break time. Dad wanted to be in the old West, I was happy just to be his side kick!!. Rip Dad

The intro sequence is a masterpiece of editing and scoring: it tells a story with just the camera and the music. A model of great film making.

2:00 Only the great admiral John Ford could use his name with that backdrop. The greatest director.

The bugle call at the end of the opening credits is called "Guard Mounting." I've also heard it refered to as "Assembly of the Guard Detail" but I believe that usage goes back to the Civil War.

The regimental bugler was required to know instantly 84 bugle calls.

Between 1865-1898 the strength on paper of the US Army was 25,000 troops and officers. In reality it was more like 20,000 due to the number of non combatants and desertions. This caused rapid promotion in the enlisted ranks for sober, literate and upstanding men. Making 1st Sgt. at the end of the first five year enlistment was not uncommon. On the other hand officer corps promotions were slow to the point West Point Graduates often retired as captains. This changed when the army expanded to 200K for the Spanish-American war. Forty five year old captains suddenly were Lt. Col with battalion command.

Very interesting information. I am amazed by the small number of soldiers the US Army had between 1865 and 1898. Having said that, the USA did not have at that time other enemies than the Indians. Thank you very much for this data.

Did anyone notice that the San Antone song words and music done by Dale Evans....amazing.

And Dales' husband was Roy Rogers, one of the Sons Of The Pioneers listed in the credits. Whilst I have not yet seen this film, I would imagine that Dale wrote the song for Roy to sing to his band's accompaniment.
