    how long had the Detroit been sitting before you started it?

    I'm looking forward to see this machine working on some of your jobs. The one type of excavator that doesn't get enough video time on youtube.

    For simplicity, 1930s technology Detroits are hard to beat.. but God help the poor bastard that has to listen to the racket all day!

    Oh boy a detroit, the engine that leaks all of its oil out in a day and gets owned by the claterpillar.

    • @dirtgrainsteel
      @dirtgrainsteel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      😂😂😂 oh there no worse than a Case Diesel my old 830 would slobber all over its self

    • @kolewiebensohn

      @@dirtgrainsteel hey Case diesel engines are great, you can't beat a good ol 504bdt for lugging power and reliablility, the the 401 and 451 were great motors. The 30 series main downfall was the lanova cell heads otherwise bullet proof, I'd put my 930 up against any 4020 anyday. My 930 leaks a little though it's a deal in the injection pump that needs replaced, and the seal for the draft o matic needs replaced

    Great video! Thanks!

    good video. BUT I am wondering if the head is TOO clean. Was the engine oil over full or thin ? If so you might have a fuel leak under the valve cover. Possibility a loose or cracked line or lines. Hope this helps.

    • @dirtgrainsteel
      @dirtgrainsteel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm going to run it a while and check it to see if there are any problems up there rite now I'm working on trying to figure out why the boom wont stay up

    • @bladewiper
      @bladewiper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dirtgrainsteel chances are it is the piston packing. If you could put it to work, then put a heat gun on the cyls to see of one is running warmer than the other, would be a easy test. OR if you could put a pressure gauge on the rod side of the circut, if the packing is bad the pressure should increase as the oil sides by from the barrel side to the rod side, if the valve is bad the pressure should drop. I dough it has load checks in it, but am just guessing. Could be broken centering springs for that section of the hyd valve bank, but I would think it would be acting a bit funny. hope this helps.

    • @bladewiper
      @bladewiper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dirtgrainsteel if it is on the pilot side, you could shut off the engine with the boom up, as that would remove the pilot pressure, and remove that from your trouble shooting.

    • @gradallguy5767
      @gradallguy5767 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bladewiper Actually I don't believe they had pilot valves in them then. But you're probably right about the piston packings being the probable cause of boon drift. Although it had probably little to nothing to do with boon drift, my Dad bought a new 2460 Gradall in 1963 and said he fought hyd. oil leakage from day 1 from the cheveron style rod packing on the upper end of the hoist rams.

    • @bladewiper
      @bladewiper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gradallguy5767 interesting. The chevron packing needs a bit of end pressure to make it seal, I wonder if if was not tightened properly at the factory, or the grove for it was make a bit too wide.

    Why wouldn’t you have lubed up rack with pena fuild anyways while you had cover off just for the heck of it ?

    • @dirtgrainsteel
      @dirtgrainsteel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had really thought about doing that but I figured everything was free there was no corsion so I just decided to start it and it got oil pressure rite of the bat so it didn't run dry and everything had a oil film on it so I'm going to say no harm was done
