  • Join me as we repair and service a BBC Micro PSU that has let loose the "blue smoke" when the Rifa X2 Suppression capacitors failed. This video is sponsored by www.PCBWay.com!
    As well as just replacing the RIFA X2 Caps, we also service the entire power supply, using a high quality kit from www.retroclinic... - We go through the entire process so that you can do it too! The RetroClinic kit advanced servicing kit gives the PSU better smoothing on the -5v line and is recommended. If you just want to change the blown capacitors then there's a smaller kit for that too!

    Your videos are so informative. The fascination of seeing the solder flowing. The close-up vision is excellent with no focus hunting and crystal clear images. Even with magnifying head band, I don't think I can see things that well in real life. 😊

    Ive just done 3 of these. Was recently doing some work for a school, and they said they had some old scrap computers if i was interested. I was expecting some old junk PC''s. But no, it was 3 BBC Micro B's. In really good condition too. So have refurbed them, and cleaned the cases. Now they are worth over 300 each.

    Hi, Mark. I very good video especially for someone like me who is about to try and do this for myself on my 40 year old BBC Micro! Can I ask what temperature the soldering iron should be set to in order to melt the solder on the board? Silly question I know, but I am about to buy a soldering iron with a digital LCD display and I don't what what to set the temp to. Thanks in advance!

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rupinder! First of all, thanks for watching! As a rought guide I have my iron at about 330 degrees Celsius, so between 330c and 350c for most normal soldering jobs. Good luck 🤞

    Thank you for the recommended the repair on the power supply. After changing those capacitators and when I tested those 5V ouput pins it turn out to give a 10V supply. Can anyone help me if you faced such a situation and what is your recommendation for me to do next. I dare not plug it to the main motherboard board yet. Thanks please advise.

  • @discoHR
    @discoHR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    14:45 Too low temperature, it takes forever to heat up. Also, the way you're holding the soldering iron is focusing the heat transfer to the component leg, should focus on the pads with huge thermal mass instead. The leg itself has much smaller thermal mass and is easier to heat up than the huge pads and traces so I'd turn the tip around so the flat part is touching the pad. This way you'd heat both much quicker.

    • @andypyne
      @andypyne 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you want Mark to understand, you need to brush up on your innuendese (the language of the innuendo tribe from which Mark hails). Let me help you translate:
      Mark - you need to get your iron hot, hold it tightly in your hand, and slap it on the leg. While you're prodding around, give extra attention to the massive pads and touch them with your tip.........

    • @discoHR
      @discoHR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@andypyne lol ok...
      Mark: More fire, flat part down, tip also touching leg. Meat cooked sooner. :)

    • @MarkFixesStuff

      Thanks for the advice. I’ll have a go at it next time.

    22:15 star washers on the case side? really?! I realise that they were that way when you removed them but that is not how star washers are designed to work. Their purpose is to stop the nuts from vibrating off by applying a springy rough surface to stop them from turning and so need to be directly in contact with the nut. Was your PSU originally assembled incorrectly or do the Retroclinic instructions also recommend this bad practice?

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the Beeb PSU's I've come across have the star washer located here Mike. I realised it's not the norm, but eventually figured that there must be a reason so I replaced them in the same manner as they came from the factory. I even did a bit of research on google looking at other people's PSU photos and the star washer is in the same location with all these chaps.

      It's an interesting point and one that I'm glad you brought up because I find it a bit odd myself, especially because they had clearly had tons of threadlock resin to hand as well. I was wondering "what is this actually doing?", but in the end history won.
      BTW, Retroclinic do not specify the washer location at all, and all methods in this video are my own.
      Thanks for watching the video. Do you have a PSU you can check?

    • @MikePerigo
      @MikePerigo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarkFixesStuff Thanks for a quick and comprehensive reply. I did wonder if it was the norm for Beeb PSUs. I guess the practice was introduced at the design stage somehow and no-one picked it up. Since Beebs tend not to be used in high vibration 'safety critical' locations (e.g. aircraft etc.) they probably aren't needed anyway. Just think of all the star washers they could have saved if they had just not used them :) I wonder what the British Standards regulations, that they were certified to, actually have to say about them.
      I do indeed have a couple of PSUs that have been 'in storage' for 20 years hence my interest as they will need recapping once I can reacquire them. I'll try to remember to let you know when I get my hands on them.

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MikePerigo I actually thought it was "just me" wondering, hence my searching. I suspect in the 80's with only postal mail and no access to social media, things like this were just overlooked and never even noticed by BSI.
      mind you, regardless of the washers, the units have lasted thirty years. Not too shabby. I bet my LCD TV is well banjaxed by then.
