It’s never too late. Seriously. You’ve just got to put in the work of building your portfolio outside of class. Very attainable. See my video on becoming an Art Director in a year or the one on building your first campaign from scratch. Might be some good places to get started!
Nice advice on this channel! Definitely important to look into exact classes you need to graduate at certain schools if you're interested in creative. For example, my CSU has a Communications department that allows you to concentrate in Advertising - however, as we know, Advertising is another umbrella under communications, so by the time you make it to Junior year, you probably haven't even taken a class on creative yet. I was interested in creative but only took 2 or 3 classes total that were directly related to art direction. Review the classes first so you know what you're getting into!
@@OpenDoorCreative This week we're doing a career study in my productions tech class, so I came back to your channel to get some videos to show to my class! I am LOVING high school so far.
21 years old watching this video because I'm a hard-core gamer a fan of open world games, I idolize Rockstar Games as my inspiration for wanting to try to join the Rockstar Games team as an art director or for any other major studios, only problem is I know nothing about game development, I just have a good imagination and as you stated in the video I'm just trying to get a lifelong career going, where do I start? What websites do I go to do I need a PC?
I read about some sort of Adobe certificate for your resume. I know you can read it on their website. Something to look into if you have to learn Adobe anyways. You might get the program for free if you join their certificate! Might be worth the investment though I haven’t taken it yet.
I just got accepted in a University I never knew I could even get in to. I am also a 25 year old coming back to college during a pandemic. I am majoring in Communication Arts. My dream is to become an Art Director for Korean Entertainment industry. I am taking up masters a few years after I obtain my B.A degree.
Hiii hope college is going well!! I'm 20 and actually looking to go the same route, would you say getting into a good university compared to an average one betters your chances of a successful career? Like better connections?? Asking for advice :3
Since there isn't a lot of information regarding art direction to seek help from, your videos always come as a savior! Thank you so much for this, so helpful! I wanted to ask, I am seriously thinking about attending Miami Ad School's art direction masters' program next year, would that be a helpful way to create a portfolio? Though I am working on my designs, it would be great to have assistance from the professionals while building the portfolio and other skills.
If you can swing it, it’s a great option that will no doubt help you build a better portfolio. You will have to put in the work still but should leave with a strong book to get a job.
If you’re good, crave for creative autonomy yet able to remain flexible in terms of orienting all you’re creative might 😎towards a goal that is desired by your work surrounding - aaand make a brand new portfolio/reel every second year - there isn’t a chance you’ll not be an ad… highly likely this career has the most abstract entry point of all creative professions Thanks for these videos, not a lot of useful info on the internets besides your channel 🙌
Thank you for this video I will definitely check out and subscribe to your channel. I currently work full / overtime at usps as a mailman and I am torn everyday from the heavy workload and one day I realized this is not what I want to do. I am 26 Art is my passion and i would like to change my career path to pursue my dream in art. I don’t know where to begin as I didn’t even complete my AA . And when I’m off work I usually paint or draw ✍🏾.
thank you so much, Kevin ..well I'm on the harsh road already haha coz I`m based in Morocco and the schools here are shit lol so I'm relying on books .. online courses .. and your brilliant channel that deserves 100m subs .. I really appreciate and love you incredible content would you give a piece of priceless advice to a creative person with a lot of brilliant ideas thank you Kevin .. much love ❤️💡
I appreciate the kind words. I don’t know about priceless advice but just know that if you want it, you can make it happen. Don’t worry about the “harsh road”. Just know that it is attainable and you have enough at your disposal with internet to get it done. Best of luck to you!
Hi Kevin! I'm a sophomore in high school interested in becoming an art director. I want to go the university design program route and was considering doing a major in design and a minor in advertising (or vice versa). Do the design programs at medium-large sized universities (like UT Austin) provide you with a degree or do they just help with your portfolio? Do you think I would be better off majoring in design and minoring in advertising, or the other way around? And finally, are there any other major medium-large universities besides SMU, UT Austin, VCU, and Syracuse that have programs like this? I really want that stereotypical "I'm In College" feel while still doing what I need to do. I know that's a lot of questions, but any help you can give would be very much appreciated! Also, there are so many videos on your channel that I watch over and over again to keep soaking up info. So helpful!
Hey [InsertNameHere]! Alright, let me try to answer some questions to the best of my ability. It's awesome that you know this could be the career path you want to go into and you're still just a sophomore in high school. That puts you in a great spot. I recommend trying to grab the student versions of Photoshop and other programs so you can at least start experimenting and having fun making stuff. This will give you a huge advantage once college hits. I would go Design major with Advertising minor if that is an offering. At most universities, you will build your portfolio within a particular major. I, for example, went through the advertising program at UT (for my degree) and enrolled in their Texas Creative Program at the same time to build my portfolio and gain more course credits. At any of these universities, it will probably be something similar. You'll have your reg courses and your design ones, giving you plenty of room to have the college experience haha. If you choose, instead, to go to a portfolio school or a purely design school, you might get something slightly different than the typical college experience but those are still options. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Is graphic design a necessary skill? Im 26 going back to school soon and I dont have interest in sketching on a tablet anymore, I prefer coming up with creative solutions and talking to people. I love art and what graphic designers create, I just dont feel the fire for doing it myself anymore. If anything, I've been producing music in Logic Pro X for 10 years now so thats where my creativity is sourced. Beside that, communication and problem solving are stronger traits for me. Thanks.
Batsy Dubs you might look into being a strategic planner and be more on the strategy side. Creatives either have to be able to write and concept (copywriters) or design and concept (art directors). Graphic design is a very necessary skill to be an AD. Hope that helps!
Hey, you said you switched your major from architecture to advertising. Right now I’m in high school and am stuck in between choosing architecture or advertising. What made you want to switch?
Oh boy. Great question. Honest answer: freshman year I had to write an 82-page, semester-long paper on the theory of a building and I just wasn’t feeling the career as much after that. I grew a love for creative problem solving that advertising had and eventually headed that way. They are both fantastic careers. You just have to ask yourself what you would enjoy more and the good thing about college is that you can taste test and always make the switch if you have a change of heart. Best of luck! But just know that there is no wrong decision. Appreciate the comment.
10. Caroline Stefanie I’m actually not exactly sure. It probably depends on the school though you need a portfolio of some type of work samples to usually gain entry which you usually develop during your undergrad. I would reach out to the schools in which you’re eyeing to double check.
I'm from Germany im an artist but I don't really want to make art for the rest of my life I want to build concepts, story's and beautiful worlds. I'm am very creative extroverted and totally open minded. I'm planning on going to university for illustration and concept art. But what am I supposed to do after that.
Think you’ll find your interests and next steps during your chapter at university. That’s where many find out what they want to do. Start by exploring your interests and see how they relate to jobs you can see yourself doing.
Just discovered this video, I studied Graphic Design at College & graduated with a degree in Photography, would that be enough to get into an AD course? Thanks 🙏🏻
Yes you could use that to get into an AD course or portfolio school. For the job, you’ll just need to start forming an advertising portfolio that displays campaigns and design work.
I want to attend to Art Center Pasadena for Creative Direction, but i am feeling discouraged by the high cost of it. Should i consider attending a community college first? And then transfer? I really wanted to go for the full 4 years at art center
That’s a tough question to answer as it really depends on your specific situation. You can enter the industry on route to become a creative director from art center or from much less expensive alternatives. It really depends on what you think you need to achieve your goal and what you can afford. Most portfolio programs are 2 years in length. Best of luck!
@@OpenDoorCreative the difference between an Art director and Art Director Photo. I found an position I want apply an Art Director Photo in e-commerce Fashion. Are there differences??? Sorry for my bad English, I am from Germany.
@@helenaodinzow8092 not a problem. This channel is more focused on advertising. That job might be more for Art Director in publication and fashion. If that interests you, there is a much larger photography and photo editing component. Hope that helps!
Hi! I'm a 13 year old girl who like to draw and currently makes small commissions from social media. I'm nowhere near college so I wanted to know if you have a video or any tips for someone who wants to find out what kind of art career to be in because of not having access to certain programs or even a laptop\computer.
Wow. That’s a great question. As someone who was always interested in art, I can give you some of the options I was debating between growing up but don’t necessarily have an exact “what art career is best for me” resource. Now keep in mind that even without the programs, spending time just thinking, being creative, and pushing your artistry will in turn put you in a better position to succeed later. You will be building your design, art, and creative abilities regardless. Now, eventually I would start saving money from those commissions to start investing in your artistic further depending on what career starts to interest you. If you can get started early, you put yourself at an incredible advantage compared to those who don’t decide until the second half of college. Here are some design and art careers to consider: art direction in advertising or fashion or film, graphic design, architecture, video game design, animation, interior designer, art teacher/lecturer, tattoo artist, photographer, art curator, illustrator, storyboard artist. Hope that helps!
@@OpenDoorCreative I didn't know half of those even existed👁️👄👁️. I used to want to be a fashion designer when I was little, but I tried sewing and was able to do it but it wasn't enjoying it. Huge question - are there courses/colleges that provide a Masters' in Art Direction outside the USA? Trying so hard to get a good course globally. Would be great if you can help.
@@MarleneWizdom it’s all about your art direction portfolio. I know plenty of people who have become art directors with psychology, marketing, and other assorted degrees. You’ll just need to put in some real work to build a stellar portfolio that competes against those who went to school for it.
@@OpenDoorCreative Does the same apply to production design too? I was searching for job postings for PD but they mostly seem like they need a lot of experience too and seem like a job that mostly has no access to beginners with no experience in the field... Would you suggest me working as a art director and then transitioning to Production design?
Hi, I’m trying to find a good school for masters degree. I work in an ad agency and I studied mbio in university. I have only one year experience in advertising. Help
Hi there! I really appreciate your TH-cam videos! They have informed and helped me very much. I have a question, can you become an Art Director with a fine arts or studio arts degree? If so, which one do you recommend the most?
Love to hear it! You could but you would need to do a lot of work on the side to build your portfolio as graphic design will be a very important skill set. If interested in doing that, I have a book called Breaking into Art Direction that has a curriculum of assignments you can try your hand at to build your portfolio from scratch. It’s on Amazon here: www.amazon.com/Breaking-Into-Art-Direction-Advertising/dp/B09S69MG6C/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=1BL39DIJI8LY4&keywords=breaking+into+art+direction&qid=1645978213&sprefix=breaking+into+art+direction%2Caps%2C80&sr=8-3 That portfolio will be very important in becoming an AD.
Probably not. You should leave Miami ad school with a job-ready portfolio and the skills necessary to grab an internship and break into the industry (as long as you put in the effort).
Hi, I recently got accepted in an art university and the subject in which I'm getting my BFA degree is Art History. So is it possible for me to become an art director if I have a good portfolio?
To be honest, the art history degree probably won’t do you much good in art direction career path as it would be better to specialize in design/graphic design instead. But! As long as you have a great portfolio that shows your design and conceptual skills, the degree doesn’t matter as much. Hope that helps.
Hello I’m currently a senior in high school, I was offered a 20k scholarship at full sail is it worth it ? I’ve tried to research enough to understand if full sail is worth the travel and time.
I’m not sure. I haven’t heard of full sail so I can’t give advice on that. It really comes down to your own personal situation: your finances, whether they have the degree you’re looking for, etc. Best of luck on your decision!
Hey! It greatly depends on project. I generally sketch just to plan out what I want to do and then draw it from scratch on the computer utilizing illustrator. On many projects, you also shoot or use stock photography for the designs you are creating.
@@potatoprank5882 many times the client will have a bank of photos, especially product shots. Other times you will need to do a custom shoot. If you don’t have as much time or money, you can find photography on stocks sites like shutterstock or Getty to license from.
@@OpenDoorCreative And it provides a permanent license to it? or only temporary? have you ever done stock photos with client work. Sorry, the only reason why I am concerned about this is because I can't draw, and I have trouble replicating sketches on the computer with things such as the pen tool on illustrator.
@@potatoprank5882 stock photography has different usage rights. I wouldn’t get caught up in the logistics quite yet. The most important thing is to just keep making and improving.
There are always exceptions. Although I attended college (parties mostly) never graduated. I think I was heading towards a business degree. Lately have been guest speaker at Universities for commercial Art Direction. ...anyway...from 1982-1998 I Art Directed over 800 National and International commercials and dozens of music videos. Education is definitely a plus but nothing compares to plain ole talent. "having the eye", "seeing color, and black/ white when your eyes are closed", and most importantly, "telling a story between reveal to vanishing point". Yes, the composition, color selection, interesting objects, EFX, is all important but reveals and vanishing points are king. If you can't totally control the viewers eyes on the screen/print then it just becomes a tangled eye spasm mess. Reveals and vanishing points......study these two critical aspects of Art Direction then regardless of budget, concept, or product the advertisement will at least pass critical judgement.......a student pointed out to me and the class that my Art Direction has had over 3 Billion views....lol who would of ever guess coming from a non-graduate of anything. Keep Well
Daryns _world I’m at least 6 months from finishing writing it. Then I’ll have to tackle illustrations and such but might put out an initial online copy before that.
Katerina Christofi I went to the University of Texas and took part in their Texas Creative program. I got my bachelors in advertising with a minor in business. I started my career off as an Art Director and am now an Associate Creative Director.
@@OpenDoorCreative How did you START your career as an AD? Wouldnt you have to had some years of experience? How did you manage to become one straight out of college?
@@360noscopes4dayz Great question. You can see more about my journey here: th-cam.com/video/bAHHx-htKJ8/w-d-xo.html but to answer you question: Every one has a different path into the career. You can actually start your career off as a Junior Art Director in which you will learn how to be an Art Director in the role (executing lots of graphic design work and shadow photoshoots, presentations, etc. A lot of people take an Art Director internship and try to turn it into a Junior AD role. Others start off as a Graphic Designer building up their design skills/aesthetic and trying to make the transition. I would recommend the Junior AD route if possible so that you are able to start thinking more strategically and conceptually about brand's problems but there is no wrong way for any particular person. Best of luck!
Some of the schools mentioned in the video are good places to start. You’ll want to look for a portfolio program, a masters in some form of communication arts/digital arts/graphic design, or you can check out my book Breaking into Art Direction on Amazon and build your book from scratch.
@@evelinelizabethv.p1437 I wouldn’t recommend it as you wouldn’t be learning any skills for the art direction job or building your portfolio. If you’re more interested in writing, Copywriting (the wordsmiths of advertising) could also be an option. If you’re set on being an art director, I would find a masters with related skills like graphic design, communication arts, or a portfolio/design school. With all that said, you don’t need a Masters to be an AD. So basically the main thing you would need to ask yourself is where could I learn the skills necessary to build a portfolio and get a job. TH-cam, Skillshare, or my book Breaking into Art Direction might be alternate solutions for ya. Good luck!
even i study MA in english i can become an art director, right? actually my parents are only able to send me for MA in english. Money is a problem that dragging me back from my dream. BUT I DONOT WANT TO BURDEN MY PARENTS
I would save the money as an MA English degree will not give you any leg up if you want to pursue art direction. In fact, you don’t need an MA to become an art director. If you’re set on being an art director and can’t afford to take programs that are more specific to the career, I would recommend taking skillshare classes for cheap and build your portfolio of work from scratch. My book Breaking into Art Direction has a portfolio-building curriculum if you need guidance. It can be found on Amazon. Best of luck!

I just got accepted to an arts high school and I'm majoring in visual arts and production tech/media arts, with a drama minor!!
Hell yea. That’s awesome. Have fun with it.
Congratulations!💜
@@OpenDoorCreative This week we're doing a career study in my productions tech class, so I came back to your channel to get some videos to show to my class! I am LOVING high school so far.
@@kieranschmidt5389 That. Is. Awesome.
I’ve never heard of a high school like this I wish mine was like this
21 years old watching this video because I'm a hard-core gamer a fan of open world games, I idolize Rockstar Games as my inspiration for wanting to try to join the Rockstar Games team as an art director or for any other major studios, only problem is I know nothing about game development, I just have a good imagination and as you stated in the video I'm just trying to get a lifelong career going, where do I start? What websites do I go to do I need a PC?
Love it ❤️ Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Really inspiring ❣️🙌👌
Of course! Appreciate the kind words!
That is awesome. Congrats!!
Hiii hope college is going well!! I'm 20 and actually looking to go the same route, would you say getting into a good university compared to an average one betters your chances of a successful career? Like better connections?? Asking for advice :3
HI!
Can you tell what exactly film Art Directors do or can you make a video about that ?
Since there isn't a lot of information regarding art direction to seek help from, your videos always come as a savior! Thank you so much for this, so helpful!
I wanted to ask, I am seriously thinking about attending Miami Ad School's art direction masters' program next year, would that be a helpful way to create a portfolio? Though I am working on my designs, it would be great to have assistance from the professionals while building the portfolio and other skills.
If you can swing it, it’s a great option that will no doubt help you build a better portfolio. You will have to put in the work still but should leave with a strong book to get a job.

@@OpenDoorCreative Thank you so much! You have no idea how helpful that is!
Hey.. I'm majoring in Advertising & Media, i really love my field ♥️
Alpha Nemesis that’s awesome. Important that you find something you enjoy. A lot of our life is spent at work.
@@OpenDoorCreative Yeah you are right!
Really helpful thanks!!!
No prob!
About portfolio school, do we need to have undergraduate degrees background or can i apply right away after high school?
10. Caroline Stefanie I’m actually not exactly sure. It probably depends on the school though you need a portfolio of some type of work samples to usually gain entry which you usually develop during your undergrad. I would reach out to the schools in which you’re eyeing to double check.

@@OpenDoorCreative thank you very much for the advice 👍😊
This is very encouraging!
I’m glad. Best of luck!
Where can I get your book from?

I am not sure to be honest. You might have to do some google digging.
Can i go into art direction with architecture degree? Provided i learn all the necessary skills on my own for art direction
Hi, I’m trying to find a good school for masters degree. I work in an ad agency and I studied mbio in university. I have only one year experience in advertising. Help
Before I recommend any schools, what are you wanting to do in advertising?
If I attend miami ad school do you think I should go to college after for art direction?

Yes I think that would be a solid choice if that is offered at the college you want to go to. Best of luck!
what are some good portfolio schools in Los Angeles?
The Book Shop
Hello I’m currently a senior in high school, I was offered a 20k scholarship at full sail is it worth it ? I’ve tried to research enough to understand if full sail is worth the travel and time.
I’m not sure. I haven’t heard of full sail so I can’t give advice on that. It really comes down to your own personal situation: your finances, whether they have the degree you’re looking for, etc. Best of luck on your decision!
Question, when you do work for clients, do you sketch and then graphically enhance it, or do they give you images to work with?
Hey! It greatly depends on project. I generally sketch just to plan out what I want to do and then draw it from scratch on the computer utilizing illustrator. On many projects, you also shoot or use stock photography for the designs you are creating.
@@OpenDoorCreative So you can buy stock photos from google for almost any project, unless the client provides photos they want to use?
Hello sir, I am a Ba English graduate. Which Ma course should i take to become an art director?
Some of the schools mentioned in the video are good places to start. You’ll want to look for a portfolio program, a masters in some form of communication arts/digital arts/graphic design, or you can check out my book Breaking into Art Direction on Amazon and build your book from scratch.
@@OpenDoorCreative sir one more question. can I study MA in english to become art director
Good luck!
Which course should i choose in skill share?
Introduction classes to photoshop is a good place to start.
Hello! Im a junior in highschool do you think its late to start my portofolio for college admission if i have no experience?
Not at all. You have plenty of time. Just start creating.
can i get into interior design? or is graphic design better
Haha there is no better. Choose the career path that you feel like will be more fulfilling.
even i study MA in english i can become an art director, right? actually my parents are only able to send me for MA in english.
