Love those trucks! Definitely need a bigger cam and some 3.73 gears in the back. That thing will be a beast! Just make sure you have a real good trans cooler. 3k stall can build quite a bit of heat below that

A little rust in the cylinders from setting will screw up the Rings and cause it to smoke or if you drive it everyday let it set a year the Rings will relax up on their tension to the cylinder wall or the valve seals on the head are faulty in your getting oil by the valve stem these are the three common issues from a setting motor even if it's in a warm garage one of the common problems I deal with on mine from setting ! Hope it helps you out fix it!

@Young Chevy Truck can you post of a video of the smoking if it still does it. There is 100% a difference in gas between winter blend and summer blend. If you last filled it up in one season, and then let it sit without stabilizer and start it another season you may absolutely even get pinging and detonation. Check it out let me know if you need some advice

Nice to kno I don’t need need a manual valve body install to use my floor shifter manually. The shop that’s rebuilt my transmission also told me it was safe to use it 😊. I wonder if you down shift when slowing down or just put it in neutral?
Or do you leave the sifter in the drive gear and just let it down shit on its own?

When an engine smokes after sitting it's likely from oil seeping from the rocker area down the valve guides into the cylinders...if they get real bad it becomes an every morning thing from just sitting overnigh.it won't usually leak while running because of cylinder compression

It's a fun experiment, but if you're not running a lockup converter you absolutely must choose a stall speed below your cruise RPM. So there's no reason for a non-lockup torque converter with a stall speed over 2000 RPM to even exist.
Dude i think ima be in the same boat as you im fixing to put a 5 speed in mine and mine smoked because of just where n tare meaning the mile on my 355 allowing oil to burn more but i wouldn’t worry just change plugs put good oil back in and run it ol timer told me if it dont smoke a lil bit it any doing its job specially if your trying to get hp out of a stockish motor plus if ya let one set itll do it to

it drives like a regular automatic until you stomp on it, all that stuff you are saying it is performing like a regular converter. you have to stomp it to get it to stall.

The tranny will get hotter. I put a 289 with a 512 cam and a 3000 converter and added a big tranny cooler and my 1964 Econoline van pops wheelies all day. Had to add a wheelie bar. 😳😂😂😂😂😂😂nice!

I've experienced the same. I don't really like how they feel as a daily driver. For a track only car, it'd be okay.
I tow with a 3,000 in my 4L85E in my Express van with a 383 in front of it. Does not use any more gas than it did before the converter. It only stalls noticeably higher when my foot is all the way in it.
