    Si I'm a bit new to this, but can Balena be used to deploy other projects from github? I actually have an Inkyphat and pi zero that are attached to my work bag, it updates with the date and weather conditions throughout the day (used to have train times but corona changed my ability to use public transport...) but this system seems like an easier way to deploy the projects, since right now I just use chron to update it throughout the day...

      Thanks for the question! Yes, we specialize in removing the friction from setting up edge and IoT projects, many of which from GitHub. Our goal is to make it easy for people to provision, deploy, and mange their edge devices at any scale. Check out some of our other projects on our blog (www.balena.io/blog/tag/project/) or visit our Forums (forums.balena.io/) to see what other folks are up to.

    I would love to create a few of these and send them to buddies across the country. How would they have it connect to their wifi? Super noob here.

    • @balenaio
      @balenaio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, if you take a look at the project, you'll see it includes WiFi Connect, which means if the device can't connect to the network it's set up with, it will broadcast it's own WiFi network with captive portal configuration page for your buddies to set up their own WiFi networks - we added this exactly for the purpose you describe when we shipped one to every member of our team late last year!

    Hey there, I'm using a waveshare display and am having trouble. I'm Not sure how I can get the device to release like you do @4:45. It shows that its online and connected. Would love some assistance. Thank you

    • @TheDeBarros
      @TheDeBarros 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In BalenaCloud, you'll need to put in an device environment variable on your device, name it WAVESHARE and set the value to 1.
      Then reboot. After reboot, your display should work. I have the 2.13inch waveshare and it has been working great for the past two weeks.

    • @balenaio
      @balenaio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheOnlyBiggieSmalls We're glad you got that to work. We'll also explore why the naming was an issue. Usually you can rename projects whatever you'd like. If you're still having trouble, please visit our Forums (forums.balena.io/c/project-help/12) for help as well.
      Also props to Adrian for the help! We appreciate you.

      I'm using a Waveshare display as well and I'm running into the problem that it sets the font size to 8 no matter what i set the variable to. It only works when I use the override function. Wondered if one of you maybe had the same problem and how you solved it.

    This is super cool, can I do it with other languages?

    • @balenaio
      @balenaio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! Subscribing to a quote service will depend on the service. However, the project owner can override the environment variable that defines the message. So technically you can write anything you want. We haven't tested non-English symbols, characters, or glyphs yet, so if you do, let us know. Check out more details on the repo too: github.com/balenalabs/inkyshot

    is the device connected over wifi?? and how is the device powered standalone??

    • @balenaio
      @balenaio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question! The device in this example is a Raspberry Pi Zero W, so it's connecting to the internet using Wi-Fi on 2.4Ghz. The Inkyphat display is e-ink, so when the device has its power source removed, the state of the display is the last message presented. It won't update until the device is plugged back in and reconnects.

    how difficult would it be to pull said quotes from a different place, perhaps even a file on the pi itself for when or if there is no internet?

    • @balenaio
      @balenaio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can put together a little bit of Python, then very easy. You can look at the code around this point, which is where it's pulling the quotes from the external website. You can edit the project before pushing to the device: github.com/balenalabs/inkyshot/blob/master/update-display.py#L62

    • @balenaio
      @balenaio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I don't think the idea here is to replace something like WhatsApp. It's just an alternative way to send interesting quotes or messages to friends and family using an e-ink display and a Raspberry Pi Zero.

    • @chriscrockerwhite
      @chriscrockerwhite 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The InkyPHAT is a Raspberry Pi HAT so it wouldn't make much sense to use it on something else when it's plug and play here

      I agree with you, it is overkill expense, total cost of the build is rising very fast, just using an Pi to display msg on a screen is a waste, especially when we looks at its price!!!
      I guess the same build can be realised with a TFT LCD (as 3.2 inch 320*240 SPI Serial TFT LCD Module) + an Arduino Board as micro controller.
      Dont get me wrong, I respect and salud the idea and the initial project, but to expensive when we look closer to the final cost.....
