Interesting that Toronto allows platic bags in the green bins. In Niagara they banned plastic. Funny thing is, Walkers used to take organics from Toronto and process it in Thorold. There was always a ton of plastic including everything from bikes to tv's. lmao

By green bins in Niagara, I assume you are talking about the bins for organics (e.g. food waste). If Thorold is receiving solid waste containing bikes, TV's, etc..., they might be processing solid waste that is coming from Toronto's wheeled blue (recycling) bins. In the 416, MANY, MANY people use the blue (recycling) bins as glorified garbage bins because they don't want to spend the extra money each year for a larger grey "garbage-garbage" bin which Toronto residents are charged for on their water/sewer/garbage bill that is sent out three times a year. Plastic bags are allowed in Toronto's green bins for obvious reasons. In the very beginning in 2004 when the first Toronto green bins were distributed in Scarborough, many people put their food scraps, wet garbage, etc... loose in the green bins and when the temperature went below freezing, everything froze solid in the green bins like concrete to the sides of the bin and was impossible to remove unless you used a hammer and chisel... LOL!!! Hence, Toronto Public Works allowed plastic bags that did not freeze to the sides of the green bins in the colder months and acquired technology that separated the plastic bags from the organic garbage when undergoing anaerobic digestion at the organics processing facility. The City of Toronto has a state-of-the-art system when it comes to processing green bin organic solid waste. Sorry so lengthy! --- John

@@johnwoa That's why I was mad when Niagara banned plastic. In the Winter you couldn't get loose food out of the bin. If you bang the bin when its cold, the plastic explodes.

@@johnwoa I think we got so much junk from Toronto because of the trucks the city used to use. The split in the hopper wasn't very high. Garbage would fall into the organics all day. Now that it isn't a split, and they use seperate hoppers things are better.
