- The would-be sequel would have seen Maximus in Limbo but "these things require a whole bunch of people to be facing in the same direction."

The Crowe movie that absolutely deserved a sequel was Master and Commander
Hell yeah, there’s a whole freaking book series of source material that I just started reading last month I had no idea existed haha
Won't see a sequel but a prequel is currently in development.
never seen that, heard good things
And Robin Hood. That movie was basically made and setup for a sequel
Robin Hood soooo deserved a sequel
A Nice Guys Sequel ...... thats what we need
Amen fellow adult
Been hearing this said forever, by both men and women. And you just know it would be a box office smash.
Well the movie its coming up into the 10 year old mark, and Russell Crowe isnt getting any younger. If it doesnt happen in the next 5 years, I say dont do it, I don't wanna see a half assed idea like gladiator 2 and many other sequels that are made 10-20+ years after
Of course you'd say that! It's your name. 😂
Riley spent 24 years to think of...just doing Gladiator again
It makes no sense. You're at the end of your life and you choose to do the same again but badly. Almost as bad as his miserable Napoleon failure
@@lemming2097 In fairness, the way Ridley is moving he's got another 15-20 years in him. I was stunned when I saw he's 86 years of age. That said, it's not as bad as Napoleon. It's a good film but that's it. Feels like a remake instead of a sequel.
You mean Ridley
and this time was crap
@@lemming2097 he can do whatever he wants, and he seems to be happy doing it.
love how enthusiastic russell is about his idea. sounds like an awesome sequel
We love Russell, the first film was amazing, his acting, the script, and the whole shebang made it, but it didn't need a sequel like the matrix and they were created in the same era, gladiator 2 was a cash grab and it should not have been done, partly the reason the original gladiator was amazing was in the way he died at the end, open and shut, Russell has a certain amount of loyalty to ridley and the industry which we would all probably do the same.
Djimon Hounso character spinoff for the sequel could be interesting
Especially if it was about him making his way back to his wife and child.
That would've been awesome.
Or a prequel of Proximo gaining his freedom. How he got that armor chest piece (Could have been Proximo gladiator mentor/friend) since it was his and handed it off to Maximus.
The idea of Maximus fighting to escape limbo would’ve been so unique and limitless. I really wish we could’ve seen this. I haven’t seen Gladiator 2 yet (so excited to) but it looks very much like a modern version of the original, even though it moved forward in time with Lucius. It really could’ve been Gladiator 3 or 4. The idea for 2 that Russell had sounded like a true sequel, and it would be metal AF. But it’s bizarre enough to turn people away. I’d like to imagine it would’ve been great.
(Edit: saw Gladiator 2 and still loved it)
Would be better animated tbh
Metal af? Don't you mean Meta af? lol😅
@@terrycraig6386 no metal! Lol, like cool or hardcore
By Nick Cave's own description he was writing something he knew they would never actually make, but I'd still love to see have seen it
It absolutely sucked. The lead actor was so passive, it was like he was high the whole film.
Lead character looked like an extra in a film.
Always super fun to hear Crowe's thoughts and intelligent analyses on storytelling and filmmaking.
I remember reading about this 5 years ago and thought it was finally happening when Gladiator 2 was announced. Wish we got Maximus in the afterlife instead.
He should adapt that script into a graphic novel - like Stallone did with “Expendables Go To Hell”
I never would have guessed Russel Crowe came up with that idea. I would have put all my money on him hating it
Truly gladiator 2 is saved by the cast.. The story? just a repeat of the first film with a new cast
Pedro Pascal brought it down considerably. Not his fault, but weird casting.
@@comebackguy8892 The cast are far form the problem. Dementia is a sad demise in a director that promises so much.
@@lemming2097 Think you replied to the wrong comment...
By the cast, you mean Denzel? His was the only memorable performance in the movie sadly
@juggles5474 No, the emperors where great. Especially the sick one.
Sounds better than the Gladiator 2 that we got
Just saw it today. Ugh.
fr bro
If this is the version that we got instead i think even more people would not be excited about it, this doesnt sound like Gladiator at all and does not sound like a sequel to it either
PSeaks for yourself gladiator 2 was awesome! i no way better than the first but hella good!
@@FILMNERDENawesome is a bit far. It was pretty good 7 maybe 7.5/10 the real issue is it plays more like a replay than a sequel. It’s just too similar to the original
Russell please do you idea, I so much wish to see you back in Gladiator. Best movie ever ever made.
No joke, 3:10 to Yuma is hands down one of my fav films. It gave me feelings I didn’t know that I had.
I would LOVE to see a sequel like he’s describing.
I just saw Gladiator 2 today and I'm annoyed I spent money on it. It was a bad idea to do a sequel at all, no matter the script. But, if I have to choose, I would go with Crowe's undead Maximus idea. Hopefully it'd just be all camp and he becomes a zombie general who leads an undead horde to break into heaven. At least that would be hilarious and shorter than the 2 1/2 hours I wasted at the theater earlier.
It was an unnecessary sequel that didnt need to see the light of day!
I agree it was terrible.
honestly that sounds like a completely different genre of movie.
Just watched gladiator 2 and I’m choked. What an insult to the first. If I wasn’t with friends I’d have walked out after the first hour
I was actually pleasantly surprised. For an absolutely unnecessary sequel, it was WAY better than I thought I thought it was going to be, especially considering that Ridley Scott’s last few films have been kind of hit and miss.
I didn’t think the first one was good. Just ok. Absolutely shocked it was even nominated for awards. Will I have a chance at liking the second with not really caring what they did in the first film lol? I didn’t mind Napoleon either for reference, just that it was way worse than what actually happened and Ridley’s an idiot when it comes to stories. Think both those films are 6/10 for me personally. But I like seeing not too shabbily put together historical films so always willing to give one a try
@@protector_of_the_realmswell the second one is basically a worse shot for shot remake with more cgi, so no I doubt you would like it if you didn’t like the first one
@@protector_of_the_realms Everyone has different tastes. As an owner of more than 4500 movies and a connoisseur of film, Gladiator is definitely in my top 10 movies all-time, and possibly in my top 5. Excellent plot, performances, pacing, cinematography, dialogue, action. It had everything and it flowed together well. As an idea of my tastes, I would put films like Casablanca, Godfather, Jaws, the Count of Monte Cristo at the top of my list. What, prey tell, are some of the films at the top of your list?
@ yeah personally I just thought Gladiator was ok. The plot for me at least was pretty cliche and basic something I’ve encountered thousands of times before, Performance wise I think something like beautiful mind shows Crowes dramatic range a lot more and honestly for me Phoenix was kinda boring and one note as the villain personally, he’s delivered a lot more nuance and complex performances throughout his career I think. I didn’t strongly feel about him or other characters in any way. I thought the incomplete script was pretty damning to the end product and I just didn’t get attached to any of the characters or story ultimately and was left feeling underwhelmed considering my expectations were quite high for a historical epic that won best picture which probably didn’t help going into it. Didn’t dislike it though. Some of my personal all time favourites I typically give at least at this time of my life lately are The Pianist, No Country for Old Men, Blade Runner 2049, WALL-E and 1917. Scorsese’s Silence from 2016 and Nolan’s Interstellar and Inception would probably also make my personal top 10. In terms of pop culture Fellowship of the Ring, 2 of the OG 6 Star Wars movies, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Batman, Dark Knight and my fav MCU movies like Civil War, The Avengers and Infinity War would be pretty high up and making a case at nearing my top 10. But it’s so hard with so many great films that resonate with me out there, it’s always changing and evolving or I’m always forgetting something haha
I wish we would have gotten that movie. Russel's idea sounds a bit crazy at times but it would have been a fresh breath of air and not the same rehashed shit we got instead.
Never ever i imagined that we'll get gladiator 2 which absolutely not needed. They just ruined gladiator title
I’d take that version of Gladiator 2 over this new one
Gladiator 2 is great. I loved it. But I **ALWAYS** wanted to see this version of the sequel once I heard about it!
Russel’s idea is interesting, but I wouldn’t want anything that disrupts the ending of Maximus going to Elysium and reuniting with his family.
i don’t think there should ever have been a second part to this story
Great movie. 🎉🎉🎉Gñadoatpr 2❤❤❤❤
They should've just made the entire final act of the first film a dream. Gladiator 2 shouldve started 20 years later with Maximus walking up from a nightmare and still a slave. The scenario would've been what if he hadn't agreed to meet Graccious and attempted to overthrow Commodus? The nightmare would've been a what if with him meeting his death. That's why he wakes from the dream with a start. An older Maximus, Lucilla and Commodus with a now grown Lucius would've been better IMO.
I love how the concept of purgatory to Russell Crowe is anywhere in Africa that's sanctioned heavily enough to make his fictional character feel as uncomfortable as he would, in real life.
Crazy how Age of Mythology and Gladiator got released in the same year after all those years.... crazy
It’s so funny how writers write something and actors always say they thought of the idea…..
Do you think the people that create patents always make the products themselves? Nothing wrong with starting out with an idea and letting someone with experience and a very specific skill set bring it to life.
YES! 2:00 Bring back Officer White!
He is handsome even now. 😂
Can we have the script for this film one day .🙏
Gladiator II is uncalled for
I like Russell's version to Gladiator 2
We don’t acknowledge 2. Russ needs to do an hand drawn animation version of the nick cave script
That is one of the worse ideas I've ever heard for a sequel. "Maximus in Somalia, limbo-land, trynna get back to earth." and then top it off with "It was all justifiable but I was too busy at the time to get it done" 🤣🤣 I'm in tears!
"Max is back to exact his revenge again! In this life and the next; and the next; AND THE NEXT! Russell Crowe returns once more straight to video in Gladiator VI: The Last Revenge!"
Ah well. Too bad. It sounds like a veritable stinker but its mighty presumptuous of me to say so when I've not had the pleasure of seeing this unbirthed masterpiece. Nick Cave is a great and evocative writer and I would like to see the two of them in the same project regardless the banality. The Proposition was awesome!
It’s a very bad idea and makes no sense the way gladiator 1 went. Very different tone and film. The people who like this idea don’t understand that. It’s something ridiculous fast the furious would do.
You put way too much time into a TH-cam comment. This isn’t twitter, lad
@@jackdaniels4346 I'm *very* certain that stringing together a single sentence is an arduous effort for someone like you, but I appreciate that you worry more about my time and less about your own. What a heart of gold.
@@Theblackout292 It just surprises me that Russell Crowe is one of those people.
@@blurgle9185 thanks petal
Limbo? Heaven? Hell? Where is the Roman mythology here? We're talking around 180 CE.
Jesus is King no matter what anyone believes
Gladiator 2 story should not have been this hard. Part 2 would have taken place immediately at the end of part 1. Use godfather 2 template….part of the movie is prequel telling the backstory of Maximus including his rise as a general and complicated relationship with Lucilla and her father. Other part would tell the story of Lucius as Falco and other leaders who supported commodus take power and attempt to kill Lucius. The gladiator part comes in a new character who was a former gladiator who helps Lucius lead a new effort to retake the throne.
Also….Gladiator part 1 missed an opportunity. As Maximus was gaining popularity, commudus should have also fought in the arena (in separate fights) as a way to further play out his craziness and jealousy. That way the end fight would have been seen as more dramatic and believable (in the sense that commudus knew how to fight himself) but he knew he was the lesser man/fighter which is why he cheats to try and win against Maximus.
Ok….. this idea actually sounded like it would be good to watch too 😮
Nick caves script was genius. It was unique
I should have wrote it
Like Russell Crowe can't be no any other Gladiator....
Why doesnt Russell take better care? He's so handsome but he just doesnt care what people think.
Here's a thought......how about a sequel to Thelma & Louise next?
All hail Dondus, emperor supreme!
Nice Guys Sequel
Making the sequel into full blown fantasy seems off putting and bad idea tho
Without even hearing Russel Crowe's idea. Anything is better than Ridley Scott scripts and directing these days
Glad that was never made, but unhappy with what we got.
Gladiator should have been a one-off, the story was concluded with Maximus dying at the end.
Instead, Ridley Scott could have focused on Roman epics like the Punic wars.
Russel Crowe is a great actor, but that’s incredibly stupid, c’mon. Imagine if this “idea” came from a movie TH-camr or something, we’d all make fun of him
Ridley should have thought deeper or he’s too old to be creative. Cuz that sucked.
The Pope needed an exorcist? 😮
BUT FUCK ALL THAT EH LETS JUST DO G1 AGAIN $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Limbo is not good idea either. Or anything he says in that interview. They should've just shown before and during war times and thats it.
The entire movie was a failure, the casting was a failure, the storyline was a failure and the special efffects were indeed very special, also a failure. Couldn’t even give a great speech before entering the colosseum, along the lines of “we must survive…. Survive” or some crap…
I just watched it, it did not like it.
What a dog shit sequel idea. Lmao
Rather than getting fat and throwing phones at hotel staff Crowe should've forced through another sequel for Jack Aubrey. There's no sequel to Gladiator, just a soft reboot that's doomed to fail. Also there's no mileage in a tepid western remake when there's a better movie that preceeded it. Nor a fake sequel that James Ellroy didn't write. Time for fatboy to stop 'fighting round the world' and pull his finger out.
Do you feel better now?
What have you done with your life that you can judge him?
WTF GLADIATORS 2 IS ABOUT GAY MEN🤑🤑🤑
Glad 2 was so forced, not good at all
