How the NHL Entry Draft and Lottery Work | NHL 101

  • With the influx of new hockey fans (especially in the pacific northwest) it seems worth while to go over some of the basics. This time its how the NHL entry draft and lottery work. Yes it will change a little once the Seattle Kraken enter the league, but the structure will remain the same. Plus with the wild ride of the 2020 double lottery there is probably even more reason for explanation. The NHL entry draft is not as strait forward as the NFL especially this year.
    UPDATE: The NHL has changed the rules slightly for the 2021 draft going forward.
    - Only the top 2 picks (not 3) will by chosen via the lottery.
    - Teams can move up a maximum of 10 slots in the draft from their end of season rank.

    UPDATE for the 2023 NHL Draft: Only 2 teams are selected in the lottery (not 3). Also a team can only move up a max of 10 spots, meaning teams 12-16 are not eligible to get the 1st overall pick but can still win a lotto spot and move up 10 spots.

    I really appreciate this informative breakdown of the basics! I don't really bother to try and read most of the team rules cause there's just so many, but having them broken down into relevant chunks explained well is awesome!

    I've got one question: now I know in which order the Teams get to pick, but who decides which players get on the draft list? And how is it decided who ranks at which spot on that list?
    So in general, I'm curious about the player Side of the drafts.
    Furthermore each NHL team has an according team in the AHL as farm-team, don't they? How does that work?

      Short version is that 18 and 19 year olds are eligible. Players older than that can also be eligible baring a number of things that disqualify them. Beyond that there isn't a 'list' that teams pick off of, and it's entirely up to scouting and what different teams are looking for to determine when they want to select a player. There are sites like the Athletic, Elite Prospects, Tankathon and a number of others that make 'mock draft' lists of where they expect players to go based on their own scouting and knowledge of what teams might be looking for.
      As for the AHL, yes as of next year I believe each team will have an AHL (basically minor league) team. It's a Pro league one step below the NHL where NHL teams can call player up from or send them down to (their affiliated team).
      There is a lot more detail to that but I hope that helps.

    I have a question, how can NHL teams draft players who are still in college? For example my friends younger brother played in the USHL and was drafted really late by the Canucks in the 2020 draft, but he's now playing hockey in the NCAA.

      Good question! So the NHL draft doesn't like the other leagues. Players are eligible from age 18 to 20. Teams are drafting the players NHL professional rights. The players can still play for their amateur (College or junior) team until they sign their professional contract.

    Hey man could you make a video on how NHL teams can acquire new players apart from entry drafts? Like the Leafs just signed a goaltender from a team similarly named to them on an entry level contract, for example. Also how does the league system work (in the US)?

    • @CheapSeatsSports
      @CheapSeatsSports  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I can do that. In short any player aged out of the entry draft (20 and older if I remember correctly) that isn't signed to an NHL contract is free game to be picked up as a free agent.

    One more question...the expansion Draft is an "Alpha Team" draft? (Anaheim will be first?)

    • @CheapSeatsSports
      @CheapSeatsSports  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since we are the only team drafting the order doesn't really matter, but yes alphabetical is a possibility for how the picks will be announced.

      Cheap Seats Sports for Vegas they did it it based on regular season record over the past year, so I’d imagine they’d do the same for the Kraken

      Agree to disagree on that for me lol
      As a Kraken fan dealing with McDavid 4 times a year is quite enough generational talent for me in the Pacific for me.... unless the Kraken get such a player.

    Too late to do anything about past drafts (Pittsburgh/Ottawa losing on purpose to draft 1st) and etc.
    If I had my druthers and could do it all over again I'd change how the system works...WHY reward lousy teams for being lousy? Your team finished 20th in a 20 team league? You get 20 ping pong balls. 19th? You get 19. 1st? You get one.
    Throw them all into one barrel and let a grabby-stick or whatever haul one out. With 32 teams now that's a 1 in 528 chance for the Cup winner to draft Celebrini or whoever. 6% for the worst team thus NOT rewarding their awfulness and possibly messing a great player up by sticking him w/ an awful team and their awful system (right Edmonton? worked so well for you until McDavid.)

    • @CheapSeatsSports
      @CheapSeatsSports  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That certainly would make things interesting. I'm not sure the league would want to deal with the backlash if a playoff team got the first overall pick but it'd make lotto day fun.
