Hello! I just received roses for valentines day (a bit early) and I'm interested in attempting to dry a couple as a momento. I've never done it before but after looking over a couple of guides I like how you did it the most (the first method) but I'm curious, how many day intervals would you switch out the damp paper for dry ones?
Happy early Valentine's Day to you! There is no set time to switch it out. You can check on your roses every few days and if you notice the paper is moist you can change it then!

@@sundaysunshine I decided to press four roses, two in early bloom and two in late bloom. It seems that one of each is becoming discolored in certain spots. I don’t exactly want to say it white because it has a mixture of green and yellow mixed into it but I’m not quite sure why, I am guessing it’s mold, maybe? Aside from this strange color they are coming along beautifully so far!

How did you get the rose to stay white? I've tried so many methods and it comes out yellow brown ? When you were constructing it, it looked yellow but then you also have it looking white 👌🏽

Should I let my rose not sit in water before I do this to prevent them from turning brown?
You can absolutely enjoy your flowers in a vase, be sure to change the water often and trim the stems as needed. Once they begin to droop or wilt, it's time to quickly get them in the presses!

I leave roses in the press for at least two weeks because it's parts can be pretty thick! Don't be afraid to open the press and check up on your flowers because it can vary!
When separating the petals one by one, they kinda lift, but when I press the flowers with my flower press they end up splitting/cracking on the bottom. How did you keep yours together and flat? (Not sure if that made sense 😅)
I totally understand! I've found to use light pressure once the flowers are in the press (or books) and then gradually add more weight. I've had less splitting this way but it still happens!
Do you have to wait until the roses are dry? Like do I need the gel stuff before i do this??
Hi, you'll want to press your flowers while they're still fresh. Drying them out with silica gel is a completely different method of preserving your flowers. I hope this helps!
How long it does take for the roses to be fully pressed?
Thanks so much for the question! It will depend on what method you are following along with your environment. My petal by petal method took ~2 weeks in the press and my profile method took ~3 weeks.

If you're looking to have very white flowers I suggest you color enhance. That's the process of using artificial colors to bring out desired colors in your final pressings! Best of luck!
What is the paper you are using?
I use white construction paper and regular computer paper! I also use cotton fabric now instead of paper and I like the reusability of fabric! Hope this helps!
Is it also affective on dried flowers
I personally have never pressed dried flowers but I know it's possible! It takes a special process to rehydrate the flowers in order to press because if you simply put dried flowers in the press it would crumble.
I think the best way to approach it is to decide if you want your flowers air dried or pressed while the flowers are fresh so you can use the specific technique for each method!
What kind of paper do you use in between the cardboard?
I use regular ol' printer paper! I just make sure if it was printed on by a laser printer that it's not a full image because then it makes the absorbency of the paper less effective!
What is the size of your flower press?
Hi! I made my flower press myself and it's about 9"x12"!
Is the 1st method gonna be moldy if you leave the green parts on?
From my experience it doesn't mold if you leave the steam on, it is only discolored. If you don't like the darkness on the stem you can flip the green leaves down to cover it before you press or I've found that you can even cut into the steam and thin out that part with a knife before you press and it will press green!

Did you have to dry your flowers before pressing?
You want to make sure your flowers aren't wet going into the press. So if there is any water on the surface of the flower you can gently dry it off with a paper towel. But that's the only drying you need to do before it goes into the press or a book!

Hi! I pressed some larger flowers and just opened it and they were moldy :(. How do you prevent that? Also, I used newspaper for the paper, is that part of the problem? Please help. After spending $100 on a flower press and 3 weeks of waiting I’m discouraged 🫤. Thank you!

For large flowers press petal by petal or make sure to thin the flowers enough so that it can press well. Large and thick flowers may mean more moisture so you'll want to make sure it's thin so the water has no where to hide.
I personally have not used newspaper but I'm sure it's possible! Stay away from the glossy newspapers though, they tend to be not absorbent. I hope this and the video helps you out, keep trying! You can start with pressing smaller flowers to build up your confidence and figure out techniques that work for you!
What glue do you use?
Hi!~ Depending on the flower I use either Elmer's glue stick, Mod Podge or a PVA glue! I hope this helps!
I’m 16. I’m in my first serious relationship with the perfect boy. :)) Its Valentines today and I’ve been sick for about 3 days. I went to the doctors and got antibiotics for strep throat. I’ve had to cancel our date for tomorrow and we’re both really upset. He’s done his best to make me feel better over text, but this really wasn’t how I wanted our first Valentines to be and I’ve cried over it a couple times now.
20 minutes ago my bf came to the front door will a bouquet of flowers and a pink rose on his way to work. I’m so happy. This is the first flower from my first ever Valentines with someone I’m dating, and it’s with him of all people.
I love him so much and I want a way to preserve this moment that means so much to me.

1. Red flowers tend to change to a deep deep red sometimes even a purple red. My red roses have retained a non-brown color even until now but over time I will expect it will turn a bit brown, it's natural!
2. In my experience a thick stem won't affect the color of the flower petals. But a thick stem can higher the chance of a brown receptacle (the thick green part just below the flower head). I like to cut my stems in half because it makes the final pressing more manageable to mount.
3. This will ultimately depend on how thin your flowers are, what position you pressed the flower in, the location where you flowers are pressing but generally it'll be 2.5-4 weeks for roses!
4. It is! Flowers get crispy once they're pressed so be careful and gentle!

@@sundaysunshine I have a red and a yellow Frangipani plants (Hawaiian Lei 🌸 plant), I have my rose bushes of course I have an olive tree that is one of my potted favorites, because I live in FL I have an entire host of different palm trees in my backyard, my favorites are my bottle palms, I have a passion fruit tree that I just recently cut back, a couple of fig trees, lemon and lime trees, I have a few elephant ear bushes that compliment the palms nicely; I love my succulents too, but most of them are in pots outside next to the pool!! I don’t discriminate when it comes to my flora, and I love all of my plants and flowers………..After all a flower is simply a weed making a fashion statement!!
@@sundaysunshine I’m from Vermont, and we have some great flora up that way too, unfortunately we only get a few months of nice weather and sunshine, so Florida was a nice change from the nasty cold weather and heaps of snow for me!! I was blown away by how quickly the flora here in FL grows though, and the vast array of different types of plants and flowers is amazing to me as well!! All that warm weather and sunshine goes well for my garden, and I’m able to get outdoors to enjoy it without level 5 cold weather gear and clothing anyway. I’m actually retired from the military nowadays, but I have a friend who knows a local flower shop owner who is looking for someone to help him out and I am very much looking forward to getting myself back into the flower shop and helping people make their precious memories with my floral designs!!

Thank you! Color is always tricky with pressing flowers but even trickier for whites. Naturally white flowers will not retain their fresh white color, they will turn a cream or tan.
My #1 tip for pressing flowers to retain a vibrant color is to press while the flowers are still fresh (white flowers will show age and bruises very obviously out of the press).
#2 It's all about the paper. Make sure you are using absorbent paper and don't be afraid to change the paper out if you see the paper is moist and/or stained.

Hi! If. you're pressing a flower only for 1-2 days it will eventually mold because there is still moisture in the flowers. Pressing flowers is a long process but it can be done more quickly by using a microwave! I have a video on that process as well!

Depending on how you press your rose (whole or petal by petal) it can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks in the press!

I've had great results with pressing roses! Just keep the pieces you're pressing as thin as possible! With white roses I find that they brown after a while but I think they're still beautiful!

How do you dry it afterwards, to prevent it rotting?
I keep my pressed flowers in between sheets of paper in a binder or in air tight containers with silica beads to absorb any extra moisture. It's important to keep your flowers away from moisture and humidity to prevent it from molding.

Question do these rot or smell?
If the flowers are pressed successfully there is no mold or unpleasant smell! Naturally pressed flowers will continue to change color, but nothing alarming!

When is the best time to press the flower? How fresh does it need to be? I just got flowers on Wednesday and would love to press them for a frame.
Ideally you want the flowers in the press before they start turning brown! For roses, you can still get a beautiful pressing even after they've brown (you would simply remove the brown petals). Hope this helps!
Hey so i tried pressing my rose from the first method but it always starts moulding from the sepal. Could u help me with that. I got ot fresh from the store and directly put it for press
Oh no, it's always disappointing to find mold! I'm glad that haven't given up on the flower pressing process! Check on your flowers in the press every few days, you might have to switch out the paper often! I hope this gives you better results!
I tried this absolutely loved it... But after somedays worms started coming and the petals ruined. What to do about that
Oh no! I know it's disappointing, I hope you don't feel too discouraged! I haven't had this happen to me but I have a few suggestions! Make sure there are no worms in the flowers when you're putting them in the press. And while your flowers are pressing, keep them off the floors and away from windows or doors (that lead outside). I hope this helps!

Hi! Thanks so much for the question! The colors are natural so they have changed to a soft yellow/brown. I try to press all my flowers while they are fresh so that I have the best color turnout and so that will naturally change color more slowly. I hope this helps!

Do I have to remove the inner petals?
I definitely recommend it! Removing the inner petals help the flower thin out which helps it remove its moisture much more quickly. The thinner the flower the higher likelihood that it will press well!

I pressed the roses while they were still fresh, doing this prevents the flower from molding and browning. There may be a few reasons why a rose browns and/or grows mold in the center.
1. The rose was not fresh.
2. Too much thickness in the flower (some petals need to be removed.
3. Extra moisture was not removed (if the flowers were recently watered or had dew on them there is a possibility that there was extra water on the surface of the flower)
4. Paper was not refreshed (roses have a lot of moisture coming out during the pressing process, so sometimes the paper needs to switched so that the paper can continue to absorb).
I hope this helps. Sometime you have to keep trying and notice ways you can press differently. Enjoy the process❤

It really depends on the thickness of your flowers. You'll know your flowers are ready when it feels like paper, even between the petals. If you run your finger gently over any part of the flower and it gives you any sort of resistance, leave it in some more!

How long do you keep the petals under the press?
Hi! Thanks for the question! If you're pressing petal by petal it'll take about 1.5-2 weeks for the petals to be completely dry. If you're pressing the rose whole, it'll take about 3-4.5 weeks. Just gently run your fingers over the flower and if it gives you any resistance, it needs more time!
