We left Castlemilk in 1972 but I remember the castle and Linn Park zoo. It was like a different world walking down from Dougrie Road to Old Castle road via Simshill area. Great video.
Love it I grew up on Holmlea Rd and spent many happy hours in the Linn. Shame the old keep was demolished as a kid we used to stand in the gorge and shout to watch the windows swing open due to the vibration. The bridge was Corpy green when I was a kid in the 60s.
Loved taking the weans to that zoo. They were ansolutely fascinated with the peacocks. There were at least 2 horses in the field next to it. Wee ones loved seeing them gallop down theohill to get their apples and sugar cubes!
Great episode. I've done parts of that walk but your added information will make my trip around Linn park more enlighten. Love all the info your investigations turn up.
I know it well ,I worked there for ten years ,I met my wife there 55 years ago ,George Mallard was one of the bosses ,John Mann was the top boss ,I looked after the ponies to start with and the pets corner then I became one of the first arborists in Glasgow after which I was part of the arborist trainng😢 team ,many happy memories in this park
Ah I loved Linn Park, it's smashing - I used to stay around the corner (when I'm certain you were my postie!) and a close friend stayed on Old Castle Road. Amazing to learn some more about it!
"gravey land" in my early teen days 80s,KP. Primary school days at holmlea. Nice neighbourhood. Great blast from the past. I never knew of a papermill. 🤔 (Can see why no bike 🚲) I remember the zoo! Another fantastic episode 👍😊
I remember the zoo in linn park there is nothing there anymore due to the council cutbacks typical local councillors. I also remember also that there were horses grazing in the local green fields the horses are no longer there which is very sad.
My father was brought up in Berridale Ave, which is about 150m from Snuffmill bridge. There used to be a Castle on the High Cliff just off Old Castle Rd as it climbs towards Simshill. When he was a child in the 1940's, they used to play in the river under the bridge and around at the bridge at Delvin Road. He told me that one time he found in the rocks the trigger and pan mechanism for a flintlock pistol. He took it to school for the history teacher to date it. The teacher sent it to Glasgow University to be dated. They sent back a letter saying it was from. Pre 1600 due to the design, but they didn't return it as it was not worth anything. In 1568 there was a Battle at Langside ( about 500m away ) which was a major defeat for Mary Queen of Scots. So there was the possibility it came from then as Mary was claimed to have been at the Castle watching the battle
Brilliant! My brother's house overlooks the park and my wife was born and raised next door (Cathcart) such a familiar location and you have done it proud very well done you. And a massive thankyou for keeping Glasgow alive.❤🤠
The owner of one of the houses (the one with the clear crest and date, white door) was also a guy called Dave/David Carruthers. He was a family friend and I've visited and stayed in that house several times. If anyone has any information about him, that would be great as we lost touch many years ago. A very informative video which brought back many nice memories, thank you for posting.
Enjoyed a lovely afternoon walking around the park last Saturday after watching your blog . We had a lovely lunch at a cafe coni on our way to the pa We had a lovely day last Saturday walking through the Linn park after watching your blog . We also enjoyed a lovely lunch at Cafe Voni on our way there ❤
To our Resident Historian, who says you can't go back home. Outstanding video and locations of your childhood. While I've visited Glasgow, I always pictured it to be a mass industrial city, it's nice seeing the outside. Thank you Sir, we look forward to your next tour.
Great video David and an eye opener for me. I worked for many years for Haldanes of Cathcart in Delvin Rd (No longer there), and had no idea of the history that was on the doorstep. Thanks.
Amazing video, loved it , can’t believe how green Glasgow is, looks like it’s footage of some where up in the highlands, so lush ,gosh your history Dave , I know also we lost so many historic structures like the castle but it still really annoys me, such a waste !
Been watching your videos for a wee while now and decided to say thanks for taking the time to make them. I actually left glesga with my mother when I was 12 to NJ. I still return when I can. Have you ever heard of Clifford Hanley? I know you've heard of "Scotland the Brave". If you are looking for a wee challenge you might like this one and the wee bit history behind it. My maiden name is Hanley too. Would you believe my name is Bonnie. Now live in the Rushmore state. Hope you get a chance to research how the song came to be the most played by bagpipers 😂.
Getting over the tree was dodgy enough but climbing up the steep bank was suicidal. I genuinely dont know how I never got a ride in a rescue helicopter in the park...
@@AstonishingGlasgow When I saw the video thumbnail, I instantly thought of that tree. If my memory serves the water flows past the structure on the left into a sort of miniature canyon round the bend. I hope that's the correct area coz I always thought it was amazing. Thanks for all the Linn info (and the memories).
Thank you so much for taking the time to make the video…. I spent many days in the 70’s and early 80’s practicing being an explorer and eejit in the park….now I live in Australia and I just had a huge smile on my face watching the video as long forgotten memories came flooding back….
Brilliant Video as usual. I always wondered where the bandstand was located, cracking detective work figuring that out! I too remember the pony trail and the zoo, some of many great memories of a super childhood around Linn Park.
l also used to dive the Linn falls & go hand over hand across the water using the rings below the Silver Bridge. Aye happy days indeed. Did Linn House not house a slab of the tree cut down across from the old quarry below Court Know where the stones erected ?.
Great episode. I only found out about Cathcart Castle recently. It's a pity none of it remains. It would have been good to see a bandstand. Last time I was there it was just to walk through from one end to the other. I will go back as there was a lot of the area I hadn't explored
Brilliant Dave, so fascinating as always. I always love the shots when you walk/jog past the camera and head up some stairs, knowing that you then turn around to retrieve the camera and head up again. You must have walked some distance to make this video.
Dave, I enjoyed the tour and the lesson. I admire all of your work. If you ever travel to the south east of the U.S.A. I would love to give you a tour of Charleston S.C, my home town. All the best.
An education for me, I was like you but in Overlee Park instead. It strikes me how similar they are down by the river. It would be the cherry on top if you could do a similar video over there.
I do this walk all the time. No way “Holly” from Red dwarf has walked down the street. 😂 How long before the Golf course becomes houses. It’s a shame you can’t cross over the other old dam that washed away, used to do it as a kid. So it was a storm 1991. No way that bit was actually mined. Only lived here all my life 😂 Yes someone has told me what that hole in the wall by the falls is 👍 sorry typing as I watch.. your kidding right that depression I always though looked like a bomb creator or meteor strike is the real deal, honestly how you find such info amazes me.
It made me look great in front of the 5 German visitors I was giving a tour to. I felt like Ron Burgundy "I dont know if you realise, I'm kind of a big deal round here" :-D
@ glad to be of assistance. Honestly though. Great content & it’s my own personal comfort watching. Gran was born and raised in Glasgow, Washington street then later linthouse. Used to tell me glorified stories of her life there (which later turned out to be a bit exaggerated) and she holidayed in every Glaswegians favourite location, Saltcoats. Met my grandpa and there the entire family have remained. She started my obsession
When I went searching I did think that might have been the location but from the aerial pictures and maps the bandstand was definitely in the horse field at the other side of the zoo from the stables. There is a small horse stable on the land now but that was only built about 15-20 years ago.
Dick Clancy ran the sawmill then became the parks chargehand ,the German bombers where drawn to the area by bonfires ,I drove the tractor rides ,the developer paid backhanders to the right people to get it .we traded animals with Calder park zoo and with the pets area in morecomb
That is so cool that you drove the tractor. I can remember it turning around on the drive next to the house but I cant remember much of the route it went when it left there.
Ma mates da used to own the 'smiddy' , there's many a night we used to sneak into the kitchen for some free munchies. The local polis used to pop in for a quick snifter before they continued their beat.
I dont set the ads I'm afraid and some people will get one advert, some will get five. Its all down to your cookies and the algorithm. I would prefer not to have adverts but I couldnt afford to spend so much time making the videos if I wasnt making the little bit off the adverts that I do.

Brilliant thank you-from an ex-pat denizen of King's Park up in a Nordic winter.
Glasgow is astonishingly beautiful.

In the early 70s there was a big felled tree lying on it's side just near the entrance at Linnview Ave. I still have a photo of me sitting on it.

Thank you so much, it really helps.

Once again, I am pure astonished 😮. Entertaining and informative. 👍
Linn Park. Astounding indeed. If it had been closer to Partick we might have shared in the kid adventure fun. Beats Disneyland. Thanks for the share.

Love that place growing up all the animals the jumps & waterfall gd ole days 👍🏻

Glasgow is Gaelic for "dear green place"

I will definitely have a look, thank you for getting in touch.
Fantastic!
The tree at 11:20 was there in the early 90s. I often crossed it carrying my golf bag up to the course. I don't know how I found the courage. 🤣
Getting over the tree was dodgy enough but climbing up the steep bank was suicidal. I genuinely dont know how I never got a ride in a rescue helicopter in the park...

In my youth, there were donkeys.
It's such a great park.
I remember the donkey rides near the white bridge.
great work, every video I learn something new about my fair city. ✌🏻✌🏻Thanks sir!

Stables where built on the site of the bandstand the original fencing was still there we had British breed ponies
When I went searching I did think that might have been the location but from the aerial pictures and maps the bandstand was definitely in the horse field at the other side of the zoo from the stables. There is a small horse stable on the land now but that was only built about 15-20 years ago.

Mary Queen of Scots traveled around Scotland more than Steve Marsh apparently.
Well it WAS her country 😏
"I'm a highly -trained eejit..."
How’s the fishing ?
Not far from the Blue Bell woods.
cafe voni 😂
What happened to the Golf course?
Its been closed since covid but you can still play golf on the land.

I gave up after 5th advert
definitely getting tiresome, I read the comments while they’re on(with the sound turned down)…
