I want the blanks filled in on Richard's life story. How did he go from being a High School dropout with a shitty gpa to being a PhD student at an Ivy League university? Must be an interesting story.
Probably got a very high SAT / ACT combined eith a compelling personal essay and then did well in college where you have significantly more freedom and independence than a typical public school
I like reading Freddie’s writing once and awhile and appreciate his values. I do feel bad though because prior to his leaving twitter I was one of the people who trolled him relentlessly. He seems happier now though so good for him.
I'm old enough to remember how mad I was when that capitalist built an enclosure around that widget making machine I was using to make a living and started charging me a percentage for every widget I made with my labor.
@@lilgarbagedisposal9141 yeah I guess they have a kinship. Freddie is a lefty who isn't insufferably annoying and Richard is a conservative who isn't just fucking dumb as rocks. Rarities in their own camps, and heretical for being so.
They're both paid propagandists who are utterly disingenuous in everything they say. Why is it so unexpected - to you - that their propagandistic aims might partially and temporarily overlap?
There is no chance of functional socialism without the widespread commitment to solidarity/sharing/accepting others' failures to certain extent. Nothing like this on the horizon. We're stuck with indiviudalist power games which is saddenning.
I'm just 10 mins in but his comment on charter schools, does he go into greater detail in the book because if from my reading the empirical case has been that it helps certain demographics, a kid in a well off public school system isn't exactly the target.
Wait, aren't some of the go to solutions for these problems, like massively shortening summer break, after schools programs, etc. , pretty well established and will reduce the variance he is talking about?
@@ADRIANC92ER i havent read sowell’s book so i am not sure but i think freddie’s point is that a lot of the things that charter schools are good at are not usually advertised + and they aren’t really good at the things they do advertise
Holy shit he said he'd be long dead before the computers are writing the code, it's been like a year and we're already seriously talking about that, o god Richard hold me
It's nice that deBoer acknowledged that the labor theory of value is criticized, but it would have been better to say that it has been falsified, not just criticized.
It has not been falsified, and there is not *a* single labor theory of value for which Marx is solely responsible. Ricardo and Smith also had a labor theory of value, doofus.
Someone who is unemployed who was able to buy an air conditioner because of, what? welfare payments, yes, owns a thing, but do they see themselves as useful? Does their life have meaning? Direction? Goals? An economic system exists within a social system.
Great discussion. Teachers unions in america must be ANNIHILATED! Freddie’s point about the evolution of desirable skills in society was very interesting
I thought he was against charters because he wants the education system to be completely privatized so people can have a real choice about when and how they want to educate their kids. But no, he's against parents having a choice itself because he thinks they don't know what's best for their kids. Also he didn't like people making profit by providing good education. He would rather burn millions in public schools with no results. 'Charter schools and their enemies' by Thomas Sowell, if he's looking for some empirical evidence.
Age 12? Seems young. The example given by the host is not convincing. If someone is opting out of school to get high, they may have other problems - not a defict of intelligence. Without assuring proper health and economic stability, we'll keep kicking kids out of education due to nature fallacy
Age 12 seems silly. 16 makes more sense. At that point they have a decent number if options for work and can legally drive. Maybe he also wants to roll back child labor laws.

"Oh no, I'm not bashing capitalism. We needed capitalism up until [insert today's date]."

_sardonic smirk_ You are not skilled a crafting reductios. At all.
This is the most unexpected crossover since Archie vs. The Punisher.
I think Hanania has linked one of Freddie's pieces on Twitter awhile back. And Freddie also mentioned Hanania one time in one of his substack posts.

Rip, sounds like Freddie fell for the MMT meme around 27:58

"falsified" big claim bud

should've asked this labour value guy about different time preference of loborers and capitalists
