that moment when you realize john mackey has never played an instrument in his life and thats why he writes in weird time signatures and satan keys. yet his music somehow sounds badass
Nah, that doesn't make much sense to me, why would that be the case? He is a genius, I don't understand why not playing an instrument would lead you to write more complicated music, he knows very well what he's doing, I can guarantee you that, and he probably has 0 issue with any of that solphege and he writes music for the appropriate level, he expects musicians to handle it well as well.
Had part of this in a marching show once... along with Hymn to a Blue Hour in another. This music is the main reason I’ve started composing and arranging myself.
University High School Orlando Florida Marching Band & Colorguard Alumni // this is the best piece of music I’ve ever had the honor of performing to, circa 2006-2007
I dont think they have enough stylistic parallels to be called that tbh. Just because they are two wind band pieces with complex time doesn't mean they are one in the same with different moods. Listen to more music
Greg Richardson how can you be bored when you’re listening to this piece? I was always so happy when I played because I was like “GO TROMBONE/CLARINET/WHOEVER HAS THE COOLEST PART RIGHT NOW”
YES BIG F AS A EUPH PLAYER THIS IS THE WORST AND IM A SENIORRR . IVE PLAYED SONGS LIKE BLUE SHADES AND DANZÓN AND THIS IS MY SENIOR SONG LIKE I COULD SLEEP THE WHOLE SONG
@dad I don't think you played a grade 5 piece of music in the 5th grade, I'm in seventh grade and the hardest pieces we play are grade 2.5, not to shatter your dreams of looking cool, but that is so unrealistic. It may have made a tinier bit more sense if you were in a symphony or orchestra, but 5th grade band, yea i doubt you played Redline Tango
I don't know who you are, John Mackey, but you are the sole living heir to Lalo Schifrin with this score, and I am enjoying the HECK out of what I am hearing, sir!
Listened to Ride (Hazo), Sevens (Hazo) then this. Felt like a trilogy of movies. Ride was the innocent beginning. Sevens was the snazzy sequel. This was the emotional conclusion.
I have had the awesome chance of learning how to conduct both Ride and Sevens, and they are both very awesome to listen to if you know what to look out for. :)
+Jake Giganti Haha right here !! but i pay all the low clarinets but Bass clarinet is my primary instrument, B flat contra and EEflat. Just so happens we have a two hour rehearsal of this tomorrow ._.
Brianwazhere John Mackey went to Juilliard. He was taught at a relatively young age by his grandfather and he expanded on it in college. (And he's self produced, that's impressive)
Logan Comeaux Your ability to use actual grammar and spelling tells me you're probably the youngest person I'd be willing to respect, even in the slightest bit.
medievalmusiclover So does John Williams'. Once you find a perfect sound to make in the orchestra, why not exploit it and write a bunch of different themes on similar wonderful sounds?
@medievalmusiclover so does 100% of all pop music. At least Johns music actually is music, and not just loud. My jazz instructor has told me over and over, and the music on the scores and on paper isint music, we are the music.
that moment when you realize john mackey has never played an instrument in his life and thats why he writes in weird time signatures and satan keys. yet his music somehow sounds badass
Moon Child yea dude, I got to meet him and wen he told me that, my jaw dropped.
Well, he also went to Juilliard
Ariellove hater hours
Ariellove hey, I know sometimes we like to talk about our opinions, but you can keep this one to yourself 😃👍

The new Pokémon games- Pokémon redline tango and Pokémon blue shades
XD
👌
JWhisp what a cool place to find your comment! I had no idea you were a wind ensemble fan. Really neat!
YES
How have I just now seen this
Its perfect
Man I love how well John Mackey uses trombone in his pieces! Every time I hear a piece composed by him I feel at home. I love it.
I love that soprano sax solo in the middle of the piece
Played this last semester, I shattered a mallet and broke the gong support...
HAHA LOL! Greetings fellow percussionist!
Triston Jones As a percussionist- most of my section buds see breaking stuff as a pride thing. lol
yes us percussionists have A LOT of fun while playing John Mackey masterpieces
Tyler Barfield Yeah. I've never played any of Mackey's works, but I drool thinking about it.
Out marching band show was Mackey music two years ago
everything he composes is pure gold
So true
OMG. The Eb Calrinet!!! Gives music goals
Yesssss
The first trombone part is insane. Most of those low notes you hear? That's the first trombone.
3rd trombone
+Aaron Gonzalez Actually its 1st 2nd and 3rd, so both of yall are right
+Aaron Gonzalez Actually its 1st 2nd and 3rd, so both of yall are right
2:09 introduces us to the best melody line of the entire piece.
Had part of this in a marching show once... along with Hymn to a Blue Hour in another. This music is the main reason I’ve started composing and arranging myself.
what show? is it on youtube?
Shawn Spencer Yes it is called The Matador by Waseca
This was also played by 2005 Seattle Cascades and 2005 Blue Devils.
Well this one is definitely red. Literally how did mans perfectly encompass a whole color in nine minutes
I'm so happy I'm a bass trombone player...
lucky
SAME!!! Blasting low notes on Xerxes was great.
NatetheGreatGAME YES! THOSE NOTES MUST BE BLASTED!
Blue AND you gotta take the half note part DOWN the octave the second time (lol I wanted to)
NatetheGreatGAME Wait... a fan of Mackey and HALF LIFE?!?!
SUPER excited to play this piece on bass clarinet soon!
I swear the last 30 seconds gave me mood swings
What is it with John Mackey and weird time signatures?
+Alex Hochstein Adds a cool style
+Alex Hochstein What is it with Alex Hochstein and trying to be a band nerd?
Sanjay Pandiri Stfu
+Matthew LeFebvre Wow, no chill. :\
Sanjay Pandiri LOL sorry.
University High School Orlando Florida Marching Band & Colorguard Alumni // this is the best piece of music I’ve ever had the honor of performing to, circa 2006-2007
Oh and 2005 Seattle Cascades and 2005 Blue Devils played it too.
This song is like "Ride - Sam Hazo's" evil big brother
I dont think they have enough stylistic parallels to be called that tbh. Just because they are two wind band pieces with complex time doesn't mean they are one in the same with different moods. Listen to more music
more like Godfather
@@mr.cleanarchonoflight8120I'll ignore everything you said cause you had the audacity to assume I need to "Listen to more music". Thanks though.
@@michaelstraw5852 you're right. That was a pissy comment. I must have been in a bad mood that day. I apologize.
Pretty much so. I've conducted Ride before, and it's one heck of a piece to understand.
can we get an F for the euphonium player being bored as hell lol.
Greg Richardson how can you be bored when you’re listening to this piece? I was always so happy when I played because I was like “GO TROMBONE/CLARINET/WHOEVER HAS THE COOLEST PART RIGHT NOW”

@@Composer_Piggy you get bored when your previous year pieces had you playing the whole song through
F
I remember when I played this in 5th grade band
Yo I remember playing it in my “gifted kiddies pre-K band”
@dad I don't think you played a grade 5 piece of music in the 5th grade, I'm in seventh grade and the hardest pieces we play are grade 2.5, not to shatter your dreams of looking cool, but that is so unrealistic. @acole r/whoosh
Acole I can’t tell if you’re being serious or sarcastic
@@dad6765 I'm being serious
this would be a perfect piece for a action part in a old agent movie
This reminds me of his soprano sax concerto, especially "wood"
I don't know who you are, John Mackey, but you are the sole living heir to Lalo Schifrin with this score, and I am enjoying the HECK out of what I am hearing, sir!
playing it this year. (Bb contrabass clarinet)
playing this, vesuvius, blue shades AND strange humors, john mackey lineup on contrabass; )
+Jacob Krapes omg I love strange humors
+Mercede Sanchez it's a fantastic song man lol and contrabass is the best instrument for anything
Blue Shades and Vesuvius are not by Mackey but are by Ticheli.
When he describes the song becoming "redder," is he referring to his synesthesia? I don't know if he has it or not, but I do.
I have it too! But just the grapheme kind, no sounds 😭
He's crazy (at least in his composition) so I wouldn't be too surprised if he was.
Listened to Ride (Hazo), Sevens (Hazo) then this. Felt like a trilogy of movies. Ride was the innocent beginning. Sevens was the snazzy sequel. This was the emotional conclusion.

1st Trombone? Ummmmmmm... YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU
So. Freaking. Awesome.
I played bassoon and soprano sax for this song
Is that a clarinet at the middle doing the glisandos?
Marilyn Poole Eb clar yep
Well Eb and Bb clarinet
at 5:10 it does some glissandos
You shouldve seen my face when the tenor sax came in at 2:30. (Hint: my profile pic)
John Mackey, same taste in video games, and same last name? Are we long lost twins?
James Zollicoffer Holy Shit. Given the rarity of our last name I feel like there's a good chance we're related lol
(With love from Florida)
David Zollicoffer I'm even more shocked that you replied after 2 years
That's a bari sax
lger2010 it’s on the tenor sax, bari, bassoon for sure, and probably other low reeds too
I believe he used parts of this song to create woods :)
This is so delightfully wonky
for gdyo piano auditions,2:30-2:55, 5:55-6:49
Is 3:40 an oboe solo??
Yes
w/ bassoon
about to perform this at university :)
Finally, flutes are heard
I want to play this in band so bad
Sick song
Awww, then feed it soup :)
John Mackey really loves dissonance doesn’t he
This piece is so sexy
WHO TOLD JOHNNY TO POP OFF LIKE THIS????
anyone else hear Breath of the Wild melody in the piano at around 2:30?
oh wow you’re right

Playing this is one of the punishments satan gives in hell... or just listening to it
but its so grooooovy
what is the solo at 3:10?
and is 5:14 soprano sax?
Sesh Pad Clarinet at 3:10 and Soprano Sax at 5:14
For some I started laughing like a creep for some reason
Clarinet 1 is hella fun HEHEHEHE
Do I hear a bit of Redacted there at 1:15?
this piano part is p hard lol
Any Bb Contrabass clarinet players here? :3
I wish I had a contra, I'm buying a low c bass soon!
NateDuttonMC Nice!
+Jake Giganti I have a low Eb bass, but I love it all the same!
+Noah Stone I've never really played Bass clarinet. I played it for like 3 days, didn't like it, so I moved to Contrabass
+Jake Giganti Haha right here !! but i pay all the low clarinets but Bass clarinet is my primary instrument, B flat contra and EEflat. Just so happens we have a two hour rehearsal of this tomorrow ._.
This dude didn't even go to college, man. Genius.

Yeah Mackey went to college.
He went to Juilliard
5:55-
てst
I remember the first time I played this I was contemplating suicide
Ren Fishing for likes, I see
I am a student prodigy. At the age of seven, I'm about to graduate
Logan Comeaux Your ability to use actual grammar and spelling tells me you're probably the youngest person I'd be willing to respect, even in the slightest bit.
That is very impressive.
Logan Comeaux and you felt the need to say this why...
Very Humble

simply cocky and arrogant?!
