    They patched the game very early to reduce the amount of cutscenes related to long rests.
    Basically, when the game released a lot of people (me and my friends included) played like you did: taking as few long rests as possible, because the game gives you a sense of urgency. This resulted in long rest cutscenes piling up and because only one can happen per long rest and things became weird. For example, you would save Karlach and then not see the Mizora cutscene till very much later unless you long rested like five times, because there were other cutscenes already scheduled.
    They "fixed" it by deciding which cutscenes are important and which ones are secondary. Now when you long rest, if an important cutscene triggers, all the secondary ones you triggered are deleted and you have no way to see them. The only way to avoid this is literally spamming long rests in the first hours of the game, which is... not very role-play friendly. Important cutscenes still pile up, so you can't miss them, but the minor ones simply disappear.

      This is the only reasonable comment about the system I've seen so far for 9 whole episodes. Also, the correct one, explaining how it actually works as of now (as for some time now to be fair), and how there is a separation between important cutscenes, that can't be missed, and secondary/optional cutscenes.

      It's one of those matters that is always popping up when playing actual DnD and every time it ends up in endless talking in circles (and shouting, if it's handled poorly). Do we rest or do we press on? If we rest, will the dude we're looking for still be in the city tomorrow? If we go to the forest and then come back a week later, will the dude still be in the city by then? Some players expect the dude to possibly be gone, because choices must have consequences... but other players hate it, it makes them nervous, they want to be able to do things the way they want without missing stuff, they feel punished if they lose access to something because they got distracted by a sidequest or did the things in a different order than expected. Some game masters will make the dude leave the city if you "waste time", others will keep them in the city till the party goes to them, others will make the party bump into the dude on the road if they leave the city... and from my experience, someone will point out it makes no sense and be mad in any case, lol.
      BG3 is no different. It has its own way to handle these situations, but it takes a while to realise how it works if you're doing a blind run. I too think the game should be more clear about it, honestly. When I play DnD with a new group I ask before the first session how these situations will be handled.

      Yea it's completely normal to miss out on some scene on the first playthrough. As his audience we're not likely to see him play again though so it makes sense that people want him to miss as little dialog as possible. I certainly didn't rest much more than he did at the start but I had nobody watching hoping to see me react to every little scene.

    • @DemonLordSparda

      I also don't think he missed anything besides the character dialogues in camp that trigger before you reach the Grove and vanish once you are there. However, those are quite literally the least important because it involves the party trying to get their bearings and talking about where to go and all that. I only discovered them by trying to long rest very early once, but they were so uninteresting I don't go out of my way to see them.
      Important scenes like with Mizora and Wyll happen upon initiating a long rest, those are high priority and impossible to miss because they trigger on zone changes too. Then there are some ! dialogues you can miss if you ignore them or trigger more than one, but that's tough to do unless you trigger a character beat and then don't rest while clearing out the goblins which is unlikely. Then there are the lower priority scenes which trigger after you begin actually sleeping. If I recall the early patch mostly split scenes between the high priority end of day scenes, and the lower priority end of of night scenes. In short, I do not think he has missed much. It's good advice to long rest fairly often, but you don't really need to do it all the time.

      This has sucked ass for me in my Durge playthrough because I got like three Durge cutscenes back-to-back, then Wyll's Mizora cutscene, then radio silence. That's all, folks, nothing more on that front. Astarion came up to me and said 'btw I'm a vampire, hope that's cool with you', and it was slightly disappointing because I'd planned to stake him for trying to bite me. 😅

    I approached long rest the same as you in the beginning. But long rest-wise, the best advice I got was to long rest whenever a party companion makes a comment about being tired. That was pretty spot on for there being a cut-scene or character interaction waiting for me back at camp. I normally wouldn’t make a backseat advice comment like that, but I hate that people are bugging you about it and you seemed like you wanted a solution to knowing when to long rest.

    Regarding the long rests, I totally agree that the game does not communicate its expectations particularly well. I missed a ton of night events like the Gale scene because I was trying to get the parasite situation handled as quickly as possible, thinking I would be narratively punished if it took too long. IMO the game would be slightly better served without so much of a sense of urgency, Lae'zel constantly telling you you're going to explode, etc etc. On the other hand, in the game's defense, these night events were probably not intended to be seen by every single player on their blind playthroughs.
    Anyway there are always a few people who get mad watching a let's play but I think the majority of your audience are a little more mature and get your reasoning for not wanting to long rest so often :) most of the comments I've seen pointing it out seem to be doing it since they enjoy the characters and want you to see as much of them as possible

    • @nickrubin7312
      @nickrubin7312 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      The sense of urgency literally addressed first saying "your tadpole is special - you don't transform", it is not like chip in CP where you literally die, in here it is addressed multiple times
      All the night events that are missable are just intended to be so, it is how it creates variance, otherwise every player would be forced to forgo their agency and content farm, which the game deliberately tries to avoid (it would been easy to implement and there is an easy mod for it, that doesn't work well tho, but it isn't deliberately, it is up to a player to decide). All the important scenes, like Astarion reveal (which has an alternative scene because you don't longrest, just proving a point that they did account for), Wyll boon/transformation are bound to happen, you can't miss them. There is literally different event types (exactly 2 - important and secondary), and ones that need to happen will always happen, ofc depending on player's choices.

      In the previous video, he was, for example, a hop from an encounter (that can be skipped with some stealth), and a zone transition that decides an Act 1 decision, and forces a long rest to give one of the scenes.
      Larian mostly handled every contingency. Want to skip Act 1? Fine, plus consequences.

    • @SnailHatan
      @SnailHatan หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      They were definitely intended to be seen. That’s why the original release had them all stack up once triggered, so nobody would miss any of them.
      They only changed the system to have “primary” and “secondary” scenes (where if you first trigger a secondary scene and then a primary scene before you’ve yet watched the secondary scene, the lesser scene will just disappear never to be seen) after a bunch of complaining from players about weird timings from some of the scenes.
      But now this punishes players by just completely removing those scenes from that whole playthrough and forcing people to play all the way through again, panic-resting so they don’t miss anything.
      It’s a terrible change that didn’t fix anything. They should just make characters hint when they have something important to talk about or say “I’m getting tired” or something to prompt players to long rest. Or have an energy/wake/sleep meter that when low you have a debuff on various stats.

      @@SnailHatan it's s a simple fix really, have every companion in the inspiration tab, and have an exclamation point next to them also a little mini notification to let you know, change the menu to inspiration/needs or something and done, i think they just like the idea of missable scenes, my brain absolutely hates it tho, i reach a safe point to long rest and spam it like 2-3 times to make sure, annoys me. especially since some scenes seem to only play in certain camps as well.

  • @VL7D
    @VL7D 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +116

    I think people might just have some urgency about getting you to long rest, because all scenes just don’t pop up anymore later. People need to chill though, this is a blind playthrough and that’s special too. Keep doing your thing and maybe your mods can tip you off on some of these things, but it’s not so serious! If he starts resting regularly now he's probably earlier than most on their first run. I certainly only got it a while later than this. If we weren't hoping to watch him do every last thing it wouldn't even matter what he does and doesn't miss.

      I do not think we were wrong to suggest him to rest more. I mean, he got some great dialog from those long rests, like Gale, Astarion and Shart, the cutscenes aren't the only thing that you get from it. And it seems like he's really enjoying dialog, and he doesn't want to miss out on it. Even though I am also pro-blind playthrough, this is one thing I think is okay to let him know, since the game does make it seem like you need to rest as little as possible.

    • @SnailHatan
      @SnailHatan หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I mean it’s kind of serious. You completely miss “secondary” long rest stories because of how they fumbled up the patch to how scenes are triggered. Just making tons of character-building and group bonding scenes completely disappear never to be seen. Terrible way to “fix” the issue. They should automatically trigger secondary scenes when you go back to camp or move those to trigger after story events and save the more integral scenes for resting.
      It’s a terrible change that didn’t fix anything. They should at LEAST make characters hint when they have something important to talk about or say “I’m getting tired” or something to prompt players to long rest. Or have an energy/wake/sleep meter that when gives a debuff on various stats when it’s low.
      Instead, they just get rid of a ton of scenes entirely, which screws over players who aren’t following a guide. Forcing players to go through the whole game again or give up and watch them all compiled on youtube. Terrible design

    Hey Mapo, several game mechanic tips here:
    - You action bars can expand to maximum of 4 rows if you need more space (you have 2 currently). You can click on +/- buttons on the left side of the end turn button.
    - Throwing a healing potion on the ground next to a character will heal everyone in range. Throwing potion at the character will make an attack roll, if successful you will deal damage to that character and after that you will heal them so i don't think its what you want.
    - characters having equipped two melee weapons will use your bonus action automatically to make two attacks if you tell him to use main hand as attack. If you use your second hand attack you can then use your main hand attack on different target if you want.
    - you can switch to melee weapon for character at the end of their turn. If you leave them with ranged weapon they will not threaten enemies near them with attack of opportunity.
    - jumping as a bonus action takes less movement for more distance traveled but you loose a bonus action. Rogue (Astarion) can also use dash as bonus action.
    Good job outplaying spider queen with her webs :D

      One more mechanics tip: You don't have to pick up objects, e.g. crates, in order to move them around. You can just "grab" them, and move them into a free spot nearby. The trajectory arrow will be blue or red depending on if you can place the item there. Your strength defines the weight and distance you can move an item. I think Mapo actually did this already, by moving the stone on landscape in the Harper's cave, but forgot about it.

    • @tarvisantabusta
      @tarvisantabusta 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      And another one: You can just click the "balance offer" button in trade window, and an appropriate sum of money gets added from either side (if they have that much) to the trade column. If the character you are trading with doesn't have that much, but your party in total has, you need to click another time, because the money gets first added to the trading character's inventory, and then to the offer.

    I think the main way they try to encourage relatively frequent long rests is primarily just through the healing "economy" of the game (food/camp supplies are abundant in the world for looting; healing potions/spell slots are more limited, so if anyone needs healing after a battle, do it with a short rest or two, and if you're out of short rests, long rest. If you're out of spell slots/rage charges/superiority dice, etc, long rest. Potions are best used in combat only.

When I started I thought, "well there's a time pressure on me because of these worms in my head, and resting takes resources besides" so I was so so reluctant with my rests. My friends would talk to me about events in the game and I would have no idea what they were talking about, because it was stuff that happens on like your third long rest and I had only done one in my whole 10 hours of playing at the time. Think of long resting like speaking to everyone on the Normandy after a mission in ME. I generally rested once an hour, but that was just cause I was paranoid about missing something. I would just recommend once per episode since they're usually 2-3 hrs long. That should be more than enough to get everything if you're not speed running the main quest.

    The first time I played, I took my time between long rests too. It feels more organic that way with the urgency of the main plot, unless my party was out of short rests and beaten down I wasn't stopping. There is no wrong way to play the game, so do what feels right to you! Anything you miss can be looked up later, or even seen if you do a Dark Urge run. The creators heavily suggest playing *your* story, even if you miss things because of it. It's almost intended to be that way. Also, you're right!! Time does pass!! In act 1, I can think of two encounters off the top of my head that change based off how often you've long rested. So go with your gut and do what feels best and is fun to you, make your own story ^-^

    Honestly I think long rests matter most if you're a spellcaster or keep a spellcaster in your party all the time, because you can't regain all your spell slots any other way. But act 1 is long enough (imo) where the long rests will come when they come, and I'm sure you'll get through everything either way! So for the long rest thing, there ARE things that will progress if you've triggered an event. So, for your example, if you had entered Waukeen's Rest and experienced the cutscene and then left, the people who you saved would've actually died.
    I think there's actually something that triggered in the druid camp by entering that you missed out on because you rested (nothing at all important, but just a little event with an NPC you'd never interact with again anyway)

    No one's mad about long resting, comments are urgent in tone because you record these in advance they want to get information to you before what they're talking about isn't relevant. Keep playing at your pace, you can see the cutscenes you missed on a second play through. Now that you know, you might be able to see a few more in through the rest of the game.
    EDIT: You're not playing the game wrong, either. You're completely correct that the game doesn't encourage you to long rest a lot like it probably should given that it gives you lots of night scenes without telling you. Keep having fun with the game, you don't have to long rest "every 10 minutes", but you don't have to stretch your self so thin between them either.

    Man, what a wonderful time this was. I got so excited when I saw the thumbnail, I've been so looking forward to this meeting. And then it was just even better with my beloved Barcus AND Raphael in a single episode, AND so much beautiful companion dialogue and interactions. I almost howled with laughter at Mapo's reaction when he wrongly sassed Astarion after Raphael's appearance, it's been so long since I've chosen that dialogue option, I'd totally forgotten how dramatically he roasts you. 😂 It's very fun seeing players misread Astarion at the start of the game. 😂
    I'm sorry people are STILL being so weird about long resting, it's very annoying especially considering how thorough and thoughtful you're being? Def no need to stress about it. Imo it actually ISN'T something the game 'expects' you do constantly, though you may think so bc of the way people have been screaming about it. The pre-emerald grove camp interactions feel more like easter eggs than anything, and of course they're not going to trigger after you've gone into the grove, because it literally doesn't make any sense for them to do so? And yeah sometimes flags are lost or get overwritten by major story events that take place at camp, it's a massive, extremely complex game so I wish people would be less weird about it. Like if you're that desperate for all the scenes go watch a damn youtube compilation, christ.
    Also, the desire to be a Bard has me genuinely wondering if it would be possible or in any way sensible to make a Bard/Monk multiclass that would actually work...very difficult to imagine lol. The idea of being a mouthy little Bard that runs around punching people in the shins is actually so incredible I desperately want to be able to do it. 😂Also imo IF you do actually want to just try out being a Bard I say go for it. Some people might whinge bc Bard's are very popular but that's LITERALLY for very good reason. Gnome Bard's are an absolute blast LOL. Mapo seems to enjoy being a mouthy little shit, and nothing beats Bard dialogue for mouthiness 😂

    I am a bit like you with long rests, I tend to be the conserve and go as long as I can too. However, what happened with me and this game, is that I started to look at rests differently. In my head rest = sleepy, but I started to think, that's not the only reason you'd take a longer rest. Like, if you just had a life or death fight or two in a row, I think it's actually kinda natural to recuperate. You'd probably also naturally take rests to go over plans and such. It helped me make sense of it more than just feel "I wouldn't sleep that often".
    Otherwise, in my experience, players of any really popular game with choices will be really opinionated/passionate, so I think it just needs to be judiciously percieved tbh. I mean, as I watch letsplays, I do sometimes get "oh please let them discover x!" but I leave it there, it's actually kinda flavourful to see whether they do or not.

    *THIS COMMENT MENTIONS SOME MISSED SCENES, IN AN EFFORT TO EXPLAIN THE SHITTY LONG REST EVENT SYSTEM!*
    *I don't know what Mapo's rules are when it comes to this, but I know some people don't like hearing about things they've missed so I'm putting a warning here just in case.*
    the thing that sucks about the Long Rest scenes - and probably the reason some people were a bit dramatic about it - is that they will get overwritten if you don't Long Rest often enough, usually they'll be in a queue and get overwritten after some time has passed but specifically at the very start of Act 1 there are three Long Rest scenes that will immediately get overwritten the moment a new one is available.
    it's a pretty big bummer because those three Long Rest scenes are actually the first three nights in the story, and it's sort of the 'getting to know each other' stage of your relationship with your companions, but it's so easy to miss! Like I genuinely haven't successfully gotten all three Long Rest scenes since my second playthrough, and that's while using a mod that notifies me of them.
    I think it's incredibly easy to get annoyed at someone for not 'Long Resting enough' when you know the game inside and out, but in all honesty what people should be annoyed at is how horribly designed the Long Rest event system is because there's no way to know if you have any pending scenes, and even if there was there's no reason that walking for like 10 minutes should permanently lock you out of three of them.

    • @nickrubin7312
      @nickrubin7312 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Please read the comment about how it was patched up early on and separated with major/secondary cutscenes
      Major pile up and can't be missed, you'll always see them.
      Secondary/unimportant will always be missed unless you playing longresting game and not a roleplaying game, they are intended so to create variance for playthrough.
      You literally try to counter it and get frustrated, when in fact, if you look at it from RP perspective and enjoying yourself, you'll see how it actually works.You're not meant to see every scene.
      If you spam - it is your choice tho, as a player, in a single player game, for sure, but it is contradictory to the design. You say it is annoying, but it is adapting to your natural flow and speed of playing, your assesment of the situation, and not content farming.
      If there was an indicator - everyone would have the exact same experience, because they wouldn't miss out on secondary scenes (and you're meant to, because it is one of the ways of how variance is created in this game, by missing out). At least most the time, they still miss out on some, because it is how the design goes - you miss out constantly on content while playing the game and push forward, you sort of carve a path in the web from the edge to the center. The system isn't ideal, but it very deliberate and it was patched in early as well for the even type separation. You're not meant to see all the scenes - that's the point, and the mod freaks out as well because of it. You think they wouldn't make the indication that forces you to farm content if they could, it is pretty easy? Exactly, because that's the whole point, for you to have unique experience, not universal. People freaking out on missing content - understandable, but that's on them, they are conditioned by other RPG/gaming experience to have all the content and same experience, and this ain't it, chief.

    • @CasHarris
      @CasHarris 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@nickrubin7312 that would be fine if it didn't break immersion by having the characters refer to conversations we've never had, and speak about conclusions we never came to. even though I didn't know that it was possible to miss entire scenes so easily on my first playthrough, I could still tell that something was off because on my first ever Long Rest my companions suddenly went from complete strangers who don't trust anyone yet to new friends who were acting like we had bonded over the course of several days and talking about all the time we've spent together.
      I only play games for story, it's specifically for Roleplay purposes that I try not to miss too many Long Rest scenes because otherwise things in the story don't flow as well for me, I have a whole guide I'm building for myself in order to make the experience of replaying the game smoother for myself when it comes to the flow of the storylines and character development. I don't expect anyone else to do this, I just enjoy it.
      I know you're not meant to see every scene as that would be impossible due to the amount of variations there are based on choices, quest completion, approval/disapproval, etc. I'm just calling it annoying because you could - and still can - miss important scenes if you don't Long Rest often enough, and while some may call those first three Long Rest scenes unimportant, I highly disagree because they give good insight into the characters and make a much smoother transition to them starting to bond with one another.
      the experience would absolutely not be the exact same for everyone if there was an indicator by the way, I've played through the game fully 5 times and partly more times than I can count and I have yet to have a single playthrough be the same, even when I mostly play it in a similar sequence every time. but yeah some people might not want that, which could be solved by having it be a toggleable option in the settings, but it's not actually needed because the mod works great.
      I don't know what tone you got from my comment, like genuinely let me know what it reads like because I'm autistic and tone is difficult for me to get right.
      it seems like you maybe think I'm hating on the game or something like that? which I'm not, it's my favorite game of all time and I've played it so many times that I've had the time to be bothered by certain aspects of the game that I think could be better designed.
      I'm also not telling him to Long Rest more, I was just commenting why I think people are obsessing over it in the comments.

      @@MumboJ Bro... they weren't created for this game 😂 They're called 'sussur', and if the name is based on or inspired by any real word it would probably be 'susurrus', a whisper. They appear in the Underdark sourcebook for FR, which means they've been around for a long time.

      @@Safiyahalishah Thank you for an actual response, they are indeed from the Underdark 2003 sourcebook but without that knowledge all i could find on google was references to BG3.

    Long resting frequently is something told as a non spoilery comment by those who have played the game, as it is impossible to know the importance when playing for the first time completely blind! I'm someone who will restart a game if I learn I missed something so bg3 has been rough sometimes 😅 I'm loving this blind playthrough more than I would enjoy watching you play this with a guide or something, and in a game like this that of course means that you won't be perfectly optimized. Most commenters are just trying to help but I can see how it can feel overwhelming especially since it's never nice to be told that you've missed content.

    Ugh, wish there had been more of these supportive 'let him do his own thing' comments when the comment section was flooded with negativity and backseating.

    Since you mentioned wanting an indicator of when to long rest, there sort of is one for when you have a new cutscene or conversation back at camp! Your character and party will start talking about a rest, and that usually means theres an exclamation mark or something at your next rest. I found this out because I felt the same way, that it wasn't clear the game wanted me to rest often! Great gameplay as always :)

    There is no wrong way to play this game. I've completed it and you have already had encounters that I've never seen. Play it your way.

    Absolutely agree on the long rest assessment. The way how the game handles time and urgency in act 1 is really inconsistent.

    There is a couple sections where if you long rest you fail a quest, but it is not where you are now. And the game will also not tell you when you are there that this will happen. So keep them saves up :P

    You didn't play the game wrong. There's no wrong way to play BG3 and that's why it's soooo good. You cannot see all the scenes and quests in one, two, and even three full playthrough. Missing some scenes just makes another unique adventure, as good as any other.
    I was just sad for you to not use spells and whatnot, and to walk around with a beaten down party. Very dangerous.

    Even at the danger of coming of as a smart-ass for using the term, but the game is suffering a bit from ludo-narrative dissonance:
    The story gives you a feeling of urgency, while gameplay wise you should rest as often as possible/needed not to miss out on missable companion interactions and explore as much as you can for finding equipment and missable quests.
    It's one of the very few issues I have with the game, but that can be simply chalked up to the fact, that is in fact still a video game.
    Otherwise I think it's absolutely stellar and it's a lot of fun seeing you have a great time with it as well.

    Long rests are beneficial but please don’t feel like you’re playing the game wrong. It’s a first playthrough - things are bound to be missed or done differently than how other people experienced it. A lot of us probably had the benefit of playing Act 1 before the game came out and therefore learned some of this stuff early on. You are not playing wrong! Don’t let anyone make you feel that way. ❤
