- From the 1987 gem of a movie "Housekeeping" directed by Bill Forsyth based on Marilynne Robinson's Pulitzer Prize nominated fiction novel published in 1980. As in the novel, Ruth (Sara Walker) narrates the unfolding events of her and her younger sister Lucille's life under the care of their highly eccentric aunt Sylvie (Christine Lahti). In this scene aunt Sylvie takes Ruth in a borrowed (to the displeasure of it's owner) leaky boat on their way to a dilapidated cottage that Sylvie believes may house "wild children" in a frosty valley just off of Fingerbone lake.
This film is so underrated.
This movie is amazing, but I hadn't remembered how lovely, magical and unsettling the score is. It's by Michael Gibbs, and it's perfection.
Tomorrow (11/26/2019) is Marilynne Robinson's 76th birthday. The author has given us this brilliant work, and others. Thank you - I have read it 7-8 times, I will read it another 7-8 times...
My favorite film. Christine Lahti was splendid as Sylvie!
I don't understand d the ending. Did they get away and live or perish somehow?
And what happened to Lucille?
@@samaelmartinus3273 In the novel, this is left ambiguous. Ruthie describes a handful of scenarios of what became of her and Sylvie, but all of these may be hypothetical. Two things are clear, however--Ruthie's consciousness lives on (though it may be a disembodied one), and neither she nor Sylvie ever see Lucille again, at least not as living witnesses.
I love the movie, the novel and the beautiful soundtrack. A hidden gem and highly recommend it all. Can so relate to my own life with a mother with severe mental health issues who survived a heart breaking for me suicide attempt but who was also loving and beautiful and unique. My sister and I were raised by our maternal grandmother and her second husband who I loved and called poppa and both were amazing albeit flawed people but I miss them all! What a beautiful movie and novel though! I'm Ruthie so much so with sadness and yet joy in just being alive as have survived several suicide attempts myself now but want to live and help others in pain.
I watched this far back in my childhood multiple times. I remember the girls hair, and the name of the movie. Been trying to find it for years! About to order it! Yes!!!
Same here! I've been looking for this...couldn't remember the name of the movie. All I could remember is the lady with the boat! Lol Glad I found this though!

My favorite movie ❤️
Love this film. Saw it more than once in the theatre and still watch the VHS occasionally today!
Love this movie. Wish maybe you could upload the part where they are out on the lake at night and they sing a few bars of "Goodnight Irene". I always loved the harmony they had when they sang it and wished they would have recorded the entire song. It's my favorite part of the movie. I used to rewind when I had it on VHS and watch that part again and again.
msvick66 someone did upload that
That fisherman dude is a great actor!
This movie is pure beauty !!! Unfortunately it is currently not available in Germany :(
Thanx for posting
Beautiful and haunting...
One of my favorite s films
This movie was filmed in Nelson B.C. (Canada) by the same film crew that filmed the movie "Roxanne" with Steve Martin.
🤣"He always does that."
Amazon (listed as 80 min) and Oldies.com (listed 1hr 56 min) are selling this finally as an all regions DVD-R. The 80 min runtime for Amazon is probably a misprint. Enjoy!

love it
