  • Horde chess is a variant where white has 36 pawns (which will be referred to as The Pawns) and black (The Pieces) needs to destroy the Horde to win.

    To make the game theoretically possible to be won by any part, White should have a King.

    5:01 I wonder, if Black moved the King to F5... would that have been stalemate? Can you stalemate the pawns in Horde Chess?

      Is that why black won, then? Horde is played way differently than regular chess. The material concept is not even close to the same in this.

    I didn't understand why the Queen moved without taking pawns when given the chance, or why pawns didn't take any piece, given the chance.

      It’s better for black to make waiting moves so white can move pawns and create weaknesses that black can exploit. Also why white didn’t capture. Capturing could have made a pawn structure weakness that black could exploit

      @@DragonOfTheWest412 nah, black stockfish was just confused because the engine's goal is to checkmate the king and there is no king. So he played waiting moves trying to improve the position, but there is no position, it just does not understand that the goal is to take all the pawns and not to checkmate.

      @@thrustvectoring8120 No the engine wasn't confused. This is Fary-Stockfish, it knows the exact rules for Horde and @Zach is right.

      I think waiting moves are the worst you could do as black. It's a race against these promoting pawns.These moves must have some unfathomable reason, or black was winning anyway?
      Still the queen could have nommed a whole line of pawns and forced white to rush? Instead just seemingly poinless moves threatening defended pawns? Looked like a very easy win once the queen was back there, but this crazy (painful to watch) weird play made it close. The rook sac and allowing a promotion made no sense whatsoever. But eventually white was out of steam...

    Brazuca na área... (E ainda capivara) o dia que eu com 36 (ou 35 para colocar o rei) peões perder eu troco meu nome. De brancas acho q foi meu filho de 3 anos q jogou. Era só fazer a avalanche simples de peão sem deixar a invasão. Ele teria q sacrificar 4 peças para invadir... E com certeza já teria sufocado o Rei preto

      It was to guard the center from a pawn avalanche. Black knew those back rank pawns were no threat.

      Plus these were waiting moves. While blacks position doesn't really change whites does and is creating weaknesses, which black can exploit.

    Dumb play. Pawns did not take the piece when had the chance and queen did not take the pawns when had the chance.

      How did you come to the conclusion that the moves were bad? Because you looked 1 single move ahead? Or just said capturing a currently unprotected piece is always right? Then you are absolutely wrong.

      No. Bad play easily leads to a loss. Black won, and fairly easily.

      @@TheLarsChannel Who is overpowered? Have you played Horde chess? It's extremely difficult to win with the black pieces, and one mistake can easily cost you the game. If black played badly white would have won.

      @@hypercubemaster2729 I havent played but the problem for white initially is that there is little room for maneuver and impossible to reach the pawns you can take without loosing an officer. Anyway, I have trouble seeing how exchanging a pawn for an officer can be wrong in such a situation.

      @@guyvisual9210 Not really... Lets say after h6 black plays gxh6 and white g7 black Kf7 and then white plays f6.
      Black can just play Nd7. If cxd7 Bxd7 e5 white has no chance anymore. If white does not take the knight and white plays e5 like u said black just plays Nxe5
